Balloon Trip minigame, remove most of the mechanics, add difficulty and you got yourself a hot mobile game, call it Flappy bird or something.

This should have been expandable, it's unacceptable to be stuck with 30 old ROMS in 2016, don't let yourself get ripped off. It's not ok for Nintendo to practice it's backwards luddite bullshit this day in age. Bulid a RetroPi and save some money.

I'm just glad the sound emulation seems a lot better than those Sega Genesis retro systems that have been out for awhile. Cool idea, but totally ruined by the sound issues.

@ph00p: What if someone doesn't want to dick around building that and just wants to play some games? Or give it to someone as a gift without doing a bunch of work? Seems fine to me

Those cable lengths are pretty ridiculous though.

I'd love a SNES version of this, especially since I've already played most NES games through the Virtual Console but literally never played an SNES game.

It's a cool little machine for sure. But 30 hard coded games should have been 300 or at least 100 to make it useful. Or expansion cards.

I've bought more Virtual Console games than I should, especially those where the emulation is broken. It's nothing wrong with making money on a legacy, but do it the right way and be fair.

I'm sure this will help Nintendo sell some amiibos, VC games and create interest for the upcoming Switch, which probably is the whole point.

I'm sure this will help Nintendo sell some amiibos, VC games and create interest for the upcoming Switch, which probably is the whole point.

That's the part I don't quite grok. No connectivity, no upgrade potential, just a slab with 60 games--take 'em or leave 'em. Where does this fit into Nintendo's ecosystem, especially with the Switch generating its own hype?

Is a one-and-done piece of hardware supposed to pave the way for their flagship hardware? (This is an honest question, not disagreeing. I'm baffled.)

Could I use this to 'beam' the HDMI output to my TV? That would seemingly allow the console to sit on my coffee table (plug into a laptop or battery), yet it is untethered to the TV by any wires.

I believe Dan is referring to the 1990 Nintendo Powerfest. It was a tour/competition that happened in cities across the US culminating in a finals at Universal Studios or something.

I think the keys are nostalgia, new generations and word of mouth. People that played those old Nintendo games when young can get this machine and introduce it to their kids. The kids get interested and the adults possibly re-interested creating an incentive to buy amiibos and the new machine. The word will spread out to the "non-gamers" and Nintendo will make more money. This is very simplified of course, and I'm not a professional analyst by any means.

I like how Dan constantly uses "But I treat my wife nice!" as a catch all example of how he's changed as an adult from when he was a kid.

One would hope so, @danryckert. One would hope.

I mean... I get brand loyalties and all, but this is just a Nintendo branded box with stuff inside that we have had available for free for over a decade on the internet (emulator/roms). Not sure if it's just my being practical or not a huge Nintendo enthusiast... Oh well, those who can throw $60 on a decorative thingy may enjoy it to their fullest!

I'm on the fence about buying this classic thing. However, if they release a SNES one with longer controller wires, then it's a day one purchase for me.

@monkeyking1969: at that point just get a raspberry pi starter kit, follow the super easy instructions for retro pi and put every game imaginable on it. Doesn't look as cool but it can do a bunch of retro consoles

Too bad they didn't include the best Castlevania. I guess it's too similar to the first one? Still, the inclusion of 2 is mindboggling. Even the fixed version some coder did at some point is bad because the underlying game is.

Edit: I looked up the Famicom exlusive titles. No crappy Mahjong. Just some other games that are considered classics over there, like Final Fantasy III, Atlantis no Nazo and River City Ransom.

Edit edit: I'd REALLY rather have River City Ransom than any Double Dragon. Also Yoshi instead of Dr. Mario, but I might be in the minority there.

Ah, love that game. Got it as a kid when my parents accidentally bought it for me when I wanted Super Mario World (and a SNES). XD

@danryckert@jeff Looks like Gamestop/Nyko are selling a 6ft extension cable for $10 or a wireless NES controller clone for $20 for this thing. A bit ridiculous of a solution but there's one available.

Is that shimmer when the screen is scrolling caused by Giant Bomb's capture setup, or did Nintendo manage to screw up the 4:3 mode by scaling to 1440x1080 instead of the pixel-perfect 1280x960? (5:4 scaling of the NES' 256x240 image rather than 4:4)

EDIT: The site seems to be converting these GIFs to static images when I try to embed them.
