One Piece is my favorite manga/anime so I'm glad these guys didn't just shit all over this. That being said, this game actually looks pretty cool.

Anyone who wants to know if they'd like One Piece should check out the Arlong Park arc Ep. 31-45 and/or the Alabasta Saga.

This anime gives a weird first impression if you start on the wrong episode.

With the amount of episodes that have passed, there's just too much information you'd be missing out on to be able to enjoy anything past the time skip. Characters like Brook and Franky seem hella weird without context.

Aaaand I'm just gonna leave this here:

Little did Daniel and Jeffery know at the time, this quick look would be but a small first step on their journey to become jerks. And now you know the rest of the story.

As a guy that is slowly playing One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2, I might also give this a shot.

Was also expecting Jeff and Dan to be super cynical during this but if Jeff gave JoJo a fair shot and kinda liked it....

That's sort of how you could describe Code Geass, though maybe not super literally.

Never watched One Piece (or any anime for that matter), but this looks like it could be kinda interesting.

Though, I wonder if the game play would stretch to fill a full disc

Anime is no different than American television. Most of it is trash, and pretty much ALL of the very most popular stuff is trash, but there's some really good stuff if you know where to look.

The main difference is that the foreignness of anime can make it difficult to find the good stuff if you don't make a conscious effort to go find it. Also, even though anime has a reputation for series with hundreds of episodes, 95% of the stuff worth watching is 26 episode or less.

I was going to say pretty much exactly this. It's kind of silly to say you hate anime cause that's like saying you hate movies or you hate video games. Even if you generally aren't interested in most of it, there's bound to be something that you'll like. Like Miyazaki films, for example. A lot of people are way into Miyazaki's stuff.

I use to really like One Piece and I use to read scans ever week. I'm sure its still fine but I'm so far behind at this point, I'm just not willing to go back to it at this point. Haven't read in about two years. I have no clue who that raccoon is.

To be fair, I'm current with the manga and I have no idea who the raccoon is.

Most of the big people in One Piece have special abilities due to eating a devil fruit. Also eating devil fruits also make you weak in water.

I've never read the manga or watched the anime… no plans to start… but I was talked into buying this game, and I'm kind of surprised at what a good first impression it made.

Wether it gets old over time remains to be seen, but all I was really expecting was a mindless action game with level ups, basically anime Dynasty Warriors, and I got something much more smartly designed. Good on them for that.

Looks nice, combat seems fairly by the numbers and the camera didn't seem too hot. I'm glad they liked Luffy.

On the whole 'why can't he swim in the water' bit that Jeff and Dan mentioned, Luffy's weak to seawater because of his Rubber power. So anyone with a magic power in One Piece will essentially drown in water.

That is correct. The back of the box proudly states that the game has an original story with all new characters created by Eiichihiro Oda himself.

One Piece is a thinking man's anime. Don't feel bad if you don't get it. That's why they have Naruto for people like that.

HAHAHAHA. My shonen is better than your shonen! XD (hint: it's all crap)

Also, this series actually has a good story excuse for you not being able to swim. When he's in water he loses his stretchy powers and sinks to the bottom of the sea like a rock.

I'm a big One Piece fan! I will explain some things.

1) In the One Piece universe there are fruits called "Devil Fruit". Eating them gives you powers, but causes the the "sea to reject you" - i.e, you lose your powers, as well as your strength, after prolonged contact to water from the ocean, though this is not permanent. It's essentially kryptonite.

There is only ever one of each Devil Fruit.

2) Luffy has scars on his chest because a few story arcs before this game takes place he lost a major battle and almost died. The scar under his eye is from before the series starts properly, as part of his backstory.

3) Brook, the skeleton, was a human who ate a Devil Fruit. His fruit ability gave him control over certain aspects of death. He was able to come back to life once, and later on in the series he learns how to do things like astrally project his soul.

4) Tony Tony Chopper was a reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit with the power of humans. Now he is a reindeer-man.

@danryckert Depending on what sort of movies you like there might be better anime.. Ghost in the Shell I feel is the best anime movie on it's own (maybe close one with Spirited away). But it can be overly serious and cryptic. Cowboy bebop is always a good alternative, and Mushishi is pretty stellar too. But if you like zany action wackiness, something like Gurren Lagann or FLCL could be up your alley.

To answer some of the questions they had (I'm marking stuff that happens much later on as spoilers for those who care):
Luffy can do the stretchy shit cause he ate one of the Devil Fruits which grant powers to people who eat them but at the cost of no longer being able to swim (Why he can't go into the water as well) Luffy eventually has 2 "gears" which are his powered up modes. Gear 2 he goes red and pumps more blood through his veins than is humanely possible (but because he is rubber, hey his veins don't care) and this gives him a speed and strength boost . Gear 3 is he inflates a given part of his body to giant proportions and clobbers fools (Can't do his entire body all at once, limited mostly to his hands and legs). He also eventually learns to use Haki which is a thing that be offensive or defensive. The defensive form being hardening your body (As shown by that body part being encased in black, steel/rock type thing)

The scar he has across his chest is from a story arc involving his brother. It marks one of the times Luffy gets utterly wrecked and doesn't bounce right back and is a significant loss in the series for him.

The hat has emotional value to him since his pirate role model gave it to him after the pirate lost an arm saving Luffy from a sea monster attack. It's sort of a promise to become a great pirate and return the hat back.

Franky is a cyborg. He's got guns in his arms, runs on Cola, has missles on his shoulders and can breath fire. Also has beam lazers.

Robyn has the Devil Fruit power of...idk what they actually call it but she can summon shit tons of hands at a distance and on peoples bodies so she just goes around snapping backs or making giant feet out of hands to stomp people with. Oh and she can fly for a very short time with wings made of hands.

Brook's story is that he ate the Devil Fruit that allows him to come back to life once (Really, it's more of a control over his spirit, making it able to back into his body after it left once he died) and it happened that when he came back to life, enough time had passed to where his body was just all bones. He is a musician and a swordsman and , after a particular arc, gains fame from being a rock star (hence the Boa and whatnot)

Tony Tony Chopper is a reindeer that ate a Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into other forms (Kung fu form, giant fluffball for defense, Strong leg form for sprinting, Strong upper body form for tackling, there's others) and also grants him the ability to talk. He's the ship's doctor because he was raised by a doctor and learned stuff from her.

Zoro is a (was a) bounty hunter. He uses 3 swords when fighting (one in his mouth). Mostly uses the sword in his mouth for his like signature moves. Doesn't really flail his neck too much to attack as you'd imagine.

Nami was a thief who stole from pirates, some shit went down with Luffy helping her, and now she's their navigator/all-knowing-weather forecast Mainly uses a staff that later gets upgraded to be able to summon lightning clouds and other weather related attacks...which sounds weird.

Usopp is a sniper who uses a slingshot. He's a compulsive liar. After spending time on an island of giant plants and animals, he creates some unique ammo for his slingshot which involves spawning man eating plants and stuff like that

Sanji is a cook. He fights with his legs as his hands are his livelihood in terms of cooking so he can't risk getting them hurt. He eventually gains the ability to walk through the air (he kicks so hard that it just happens)

Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji (Long nosed dude) all get introduced early, with Chopper, Robyn (Archaeology lady), Franky, and Brook being introduced much later. I'm talking like first 30 episodes versus about 100 i think or something like that.

Oh and his name is pronounced with an ooh not uh. So loofey not luffy.

I would agree that bleach, naruto and dragonball went off the deep end at one point or another but one piece has always been bafflingly well constructed. Ground rules are established in the first couple episodes and key powers that only become important around episode 500 are demonstrated in episode 2. Major antogonists are also established super early and the fact that the series is about a journey means you get new characters and locations without the bullshit convoluted explanations they come up with in other long running anime series. They set up the world so well in the first season they only need to ad a few mysteries to spice things up later on.

This was....surprisingly interesting for me. I might not ever buy it but if I saw it for cheap I might grab it. I have never watched the anime though.

And speaking of good anime I would say shows like Legend Of The Galactic Heroes, Mushishi, Mononoke & Monster stand up to any high quality American show, especially the first one.
