Quick Look: One Piece: Unlimited World RED

I've never really been much of a shonen guy. There wasn't really anime in my country when I was a kid, but like everyone else in my age-group I've gone through the mill of watching stuff like Akira, Fist of the North Star and Urotukudoji: Legend of the Overfiend... After that, you either come out of it going "This is just snuff porn and for jerks!" or "It's actually really impressive animation compared to G.I. Joe and Skeleton Warriors!", which I guess is the side I landed on.

The one shonen series I did stick with for it's initial run of 100+ episodes was Hunter X Hunter, because I like how they used logic to solve their battles, rather than some arbitrary powerlevel.

These days the most anime I watch is the odd show about cute girls doing cute things, but all this have sparked a love for Japanese games and I hope you Giant Bomberoonies will keep on giving the games a shot, despite always coming at them from a cynical standpoint... or maybe have some kind of community corner on the front where users can submit their own videos that you could showcase?

Code Geass is pretty much that.

I wonder if Japanese animators will eventually realize that HD resolutions mean that eyes and mouths can convey motion and emotion while a realistic size. That pirate's mouth opens larger than his head.

Also, I'm 100 episodes deep into One Piece and only recently met Chopper and have not met skeleton man yet and there is like 500 episodes ahead of me. So yea, I don't think I can recommend that show to any sane person in good conscience.

Love One Piece and have been wanting to see the guys take on it for ages. I always expected them to be super cynical and make fun of it (after all it is rather silly), but the video description makes me hopeful that they actually liked it. Let's see how this goes!

Awesome quick look, made me want to start watching the anime again

Watching someone who hasn't been exposed to the likes of Naruto, Fairy Tail or One Piece try to make heads or tails of it without any context behind why the individuals can do what they can do is always hilarious. Also if Dan actually Wiki's Luffy you know he's going to watch an episode, then there's no going back..

@redroach: Skip the filler episodes (they're rare but often bad) and you're all good. This series is great!

Save the the G-8 arc, sooooo good.

As someone who used to love One Piece and then fell off of it pretty hard a while ago, I think this game looks pretty cool. Might make for a fun rental!

At only 5 wrestling comparisons Dan was very restrained.

I have not been current with One Piece in a few months. But this looks pretty good, or as Jeff put it, "wacky fun". Pretty good quick look!

@aceofspudz: I started watching it recently (well, I'm over 80 episodes in) and it's great. It's like Dragonball Z (same animation studio) but objectively better in almost every way.

As a fan of One Piece, I found this hilarious

Oh boy i been following One piece since i was kid still read it weekly at 21 now,it's only kind of show were it always has a soft spot in my heart just for how goofy it is.

even then i couldn't even recommend it to someone because it is a commitment starting from the begining lol

still kinda fun watching the guys that have no clue about it witness it just like the JoJO QL!

I don't like much anime. However, One Piece is absolutely incredible and on a personal level I feel it practically transcends the genre and its perceived shortcomings while still maintaining their traditional tropes.

Very. I certainly wouldn't call it the most popular series in the west (whatever does own that title is pretty debatable IMO), but it's definitely up there.

God dammit I love Dan. He's so positive, and he does a very good job at curbing Jeff's pessimism. Jeff and Dan are a great team.

That was a surprisingly entertaining QL, both from the relatively open-minded commentary and the pretty solid looking game. That opening did a good job getting you into the game, first boss after 5 minutes of play.

Loved me some One Piece as a kid, but I always hated how every episode is so stretched out (no pun intended) that there's barely any story progression between recapping what happened last time and endless fights without a victor. That said, had I known about the afro skeleton, I'd probably have kept watching.

I know one piece seems childish, but a lot of shit happens in that show (like a guy getting half his face blown off)

is it just me or are all of their breasts giant in this (and every other anime) game?

Short plot Synopsis

Luffy was a kid, he ate a fruit that made him rubber. his best friend was a pirate. he grew up and became a pirate. He recruited all those guys. He fought bad dudes. He wants to find the One Piece. The end.

One Piece is the best anime going Jeff and Dan. You two could do far worse than giving that one a shot.

One thing this game has me wondering is what do people prefer in the translations of onomatopoieas. This one obviously goes in a very literal sense, but meaning is lost to anyone that doesn't already understand it.

It's a shame they haven't dipped into some anime. Obviously when you see this sort of insanely weird stuff, it can be easy to just blanket anime as all this and dismiss it. But there is more tame and mature stuff out there. I wouldn't consider myself an anime fan but if something comes along that looks cool then I'm not afraid to watch it.

I thought Death Note was fantastic.

Akira gets weird I think but it's stunning just to watch for the animation.

Attack on Titan is great action and interesting story but milks it like Dragon Ball Z does, every episode is a cliffhanger and it's just like OMG COME ON! Whhhhhyyyy!?!?!

Sword Art Online is great if you are into MMOs (especially pre-WoW stuff)

Steins:Gate or whatever was pretty interesting. Especially because I found out it is based on a real event?

And that is just what I can remember off the top of my head that I've watched in the last 15 years.

To anyone trying to catch up on One Piece, I would recommend One Pace. It is like an abridged version of One Piece, but it only gets rid of all the recap filler while also keeping it coherent. I am currently up to date on the show and only recently learned about this, but I can definitely say that later on it starts to feel like less than half of the episode is actually progress while the rest is recaps and stuff.

I kinda want an endurance run of this now.

Is the lady in this OP a different one than from the game or did she eat a devil fruit too to change her body?

One Piece does actually have a legitimate lore reason for why Luffy can't swim but I will bet you the other controllable characters can't swim either.

The orange haired girl? They did a sort of redesign of all the characters, around when Luffy gets that chest scar. In the story they disband and train for two years, so that is why they all look different than in this video.
