@newhuman: Haha - damn you :) Thank you for catching that. You are correct and I won't edit my dumb post. Of course I am NOT defending any ignorance, only explaining partly why this one example occurs so often with Americans, as an American interacting with other Americans, and as a result of a decade of witnessing people making fun of Americans about their shit world geography knowledge.

As an American that grew up overseas, and rugby (union) player for the last 12 years, the quality of these rugby games are damn near offensive.

Man, it's tough being in a league with those Orc Griquas. Every time their leader gets a red card, some new guy gets promoted to team captain and comes for your head!

That Dan is learning about Europe using a map from www.yourchildlearns.com is hilarious.

(I'd do terribly on labeling Eastern Europe.)

Eastern Europe is my almost complete blindspot in Europe, and I'm from Norway! Fuck if I know where Lithuania is.

You should play Europa Universalis 4! Lithuania is south of you and basically stands between Poland and Russia. It used to be much bigger but now there's all kinds of other places like Belarus and Latvia because... well wars.

Bonus trivia: Poland and Lithuania at one time formed a union known simply as The Commonwealth.

South of Norway?! It probably is on a lower latitude, so technically it is south of Norway, but that's a bit vague.

@gaff: I'll grant you a lot is south of Norway due to it's location but Lithuania is very much south across the water from Norway/Sweeden. Check a map and you'll see it's a good hint.

@danryckert Tonga and thereabouts are parts of an area considered in New Zealand, so there's a lot of crossover there with the Samoan wrestling family. Bad Luck Fale still lives there, I believe.

Also, the Bushwhackers.

What's the thing with Denmark and The Netherlands? Why do people tend to confuse these two specific countries? They are not adjacent, and don't immediately have a lot of culture in common.

@schmid: I just think Denmark doesn't have many obvious cultural touchstones. Like the other Scandinavian countries lay next to eachother in the north, while Denmark is kinda stuck underneath them.

When i have to think about a typical Danish thing as a dutchman, the only thing i can bring up is their footballplayers and that the country is apparently flat (like the Netherlands).

@artsandrules: Great post. It just makes no sense to me that you would intentionally make your world so small when there are so many different cultures and so much history everywhere.

In all fairness, you can flip this around and hand Europeans a blank U.S. map and generally get similar struggles. I don't think many of us really expect y'all to know the difference between Kansas and Nebraska (spoiler: there isn't much of one), but some states are wildly different (e.g. New Mexico and New York have virtually nothing in common except the word "New"). Let's also keep in mind that some of our states are fucking huge as well and can have massive in-state cultural differences. London and Venice are closer than it is from one side of Texas to the other. Madrid is closer to Moscow than San Francisco is to New York.

It's not so much that Americans "intentionally make our world small"; in many cases, we're simply on a larger geographic scale. I've been fortunate enough to travel the U.S. and the world quite a bit, but even traversing the U.S. alone is much more of an undertaking, with far more varied culture, terrain, climate, et al. than it generally gets credit for. There's a criticism to be made about American ignorance as we do often live in a bubble of sorts, but please keep in mind that it's a very large bubble and that it's not quite as easy to be "worldly" when our states are often as big or bigger than European countries. Also, American culture is as diverse as it gets, so even someone who's never left the country can actually be quite cultured.

TL; DR: The world is big, as is the U.S. itself, so we're inherently all ignorant of some other cultures, and that's okay.

@onemanarmyy: Well, to defend my country, I would mention game devs like Playdead ("Limbo", "Inside") and IO Interactive ("Hitman"), movie people Lars Von Trier ("Melancholia") and Refn ("Drive"), actors Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), and writers H. C. Andersen and Kierkegaard. Hmm.. and LEGO, I guess.
