Quick Look: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

I've been dreaming of a game like this for years and the closest we've come this decade has been Castle Crashers (Which was a damn fine game mind you).
This game far surpasses that and tickles every nostalgic nerdbone in my body at the same time!

Really enjoyed the books and the movies, suspect playing this with my Pilgrim appreciating friends will be a good time. The wife doesn't mind this stuff either. Day one confirmed.

I also feel like it's worth pointing out that thinking that Scott is kind of a douche is actually part of the story. Crazy, I know!

I'm gonna chime in and say, as a usual fan of Jeff Gerstmann's ideas, that maybe he should try a little harder when making fun of things which are trying to be fun.
 
Hey, it's a game about a comic which is about indie culture which references games.  If that's not your thing, maybe you could not review and not look like such a clueless asshole when you're going through.  "Having no real familiarity with the property--" well then, educate yourself before you assume to put your voice on the internet. There is no law about the genre of "brawler" or about any of the specific references so far - and for the ones that are in the air, the creators have specifically went out of their way to seek approval from folks like Miyamoto, etc. to make those references okay.  So maybe don't get so uptight about the movie you think is too mainstream for you? Because that shouldn't even exist alongside a game that's $10.  There's nothing wrong with this game, and your post-post-modern cred looks retarded.  Try harder next time, and maybe you'll do better at journalism than the small sites who actually think when they talk.

Just saw the movie and think Edgar Wright knows nothing about what makes gaming cool! Was tempted to walk out 3 times but the fact that I'm a film buff and paid $18 for my ticket I sucked it up just so I could say I saw it.

I disagree. They presented it like they would any Quick Look. They are playing through it pointing out what they notice trying to be non-opinionated about it. They aren't for it or against it. Jeff didn't talk down on it, he just pointed out a lot of the resemblance's between it and River City Ransom. I think when it was realized how similar to River City this is, Jeff was less interested because this isn't really a new game, just a new take on an old classic.   "

This game is pretty good, bought it a few days ago to play with my girlfriend.  I really like the visuals and the music, and even though the game starts off kinda slow game play wise, it gets better as you learn more moves and stuff.
 
I've always been a fan of brawlers, but I think playing one single player is kind of missing the point. These games are best played with at least one other person. I love to break out my SNES and play through Turtles in Time with a friend, but I would never play it alone, it's just not as fun.

I was hoping for some 4-player co-op footage with this video...

Is this on XBLA?

Most people who throw around the word 'hipster' don't know what it means, so they're trash. And the rest of the people who do know what it means are trash because they actually took the time to google it.
 
I myself read through 15 pages of comments and I still don't know what the fuck the word means, but I will not admit defeat by googling it.
 
And yes, this is an overgeneralization. People sometimes do that for comedic or dramatic effect. Oh great, now the joke's spoiled because you didn't get it right away, and now don't have the chance to.

Not sure exactly how long this game could really last as entertainment. It just generally doesn't look enthralling. I wouldn't call the video game references clever. Blatant would be a better word. Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, though. I guess it can really be hit-or-miss depending on the person. For instance, the world map I recognized right away as looking like Super Mario World. I enjoyed it. The question-mark boxes, though, weren't really all that special to me.

Wow, this is such a dire quicklook. I've never read the graphic novels and haven't seen the movie, but it immediately bothered me that the tone was so dour and negative. It looks cute and fun and in no way seems to have earned such ire. I had to stop watching at 8 minutes.

Loved the movie, this looks awesome. 

This game looks great. I'm definitely happier with this than with the movie.

I got the game today, played through the first level with my room mate. Its a great game! Yes it is like river city ransom in game play....but that is not a bad thing. The controls are fun, and the game is not super easy. And you can tell that there was work put into the game. The animations are really great. Music is fun and upbeat. The over lay of video games, is not that bad really. I did not even really notice them when playing. O look the world map looks like SM3....yeahgot over that in a few seconds cause then i was to busy hitting stuff iwht a baseball bat and haveing snowball fights with my room mate. lol.

I love this QL so much. Specifically because it hurts the feelings of fanboys, something you really can't do enough, and it's especially hurtful because it's true.  GB staff, lemme know when you next make a video that's a real "downer". Because I will watch it with my mouth.
 
The game is pretty much as they described at first glance; the one good thing about it is that it could provide a very clear insight as to why there aren't many brawlers around anymore: they're really boring, complete with all the standard tropes like off-screen enemies, gimmicky pick-ups, special rules to hit stuff that's floored, etc. Combat was pretty boring too, with some moves turned obsolete once something better came along, not to mention how (at least in the beginning) much health the mobs start out with. It was tedious at first because it was a money grind; still tedious later because you're killing enemies left and right just to get to the end of the stages.
 
And I hate all things retro now. I used to be indifferent, but good ol' Scott Pilgrim saw to that. Next person I see parading around in a celebratory NES T-shirt will get my farts in their mouth. Luckily, stuffing as many inane references you can into a game puts it beyond criticism. Here's the thing. I don't want games, or any other media for that matter, to like stuff for me. I'm capable of that, and if I really wanna talk about how much I like OLD VIDJAGAEMZ there's always a nerd within phone's reach. A much better approach is simply being a good game yourself. Novel concept, I know. 
 
It's a classic example of style over substance. Nice pixel artwork, very good music. Too bad they had to be diminished somewhat by the shamelessly indulgent retro parade. Just put your money towards the soundtrack instead.
 
Oh, and "it's better with friends" is the weakest defense ever. Few activities aren't better with friends. The game doesn't suck less because others can shoulder the suck with you.
 
 

i understand why jeff didn't like the game. it isnt anything new to him. but as someone who hasn't played RCR and likes scott pilgrim i would definitely check this game out. it looks like fun.

I really like the way this game looks and sounds, but I just cannot play brawlers any more; the gameplay gets so boring so fast. Also, I know nothing about Scott Pilgrim.

This is a real old school I don't know shit about this property so allow me to compare it condescendingly to existing games while I ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Giant Bomb Quick Look.

Quick Looks thankfully are much better these days.
