Make sure to buy it from the developers website! Its cheaper than steam and you get the soundtrack. They give you a steam key + DRM free download anyway. Literally no reason to buy it on steam.

I wish this game looked different. I can't take it seriously at all with it looking pretty much identical to Terraria - besides all the concepts being the same too. I kind of hate it because it's so direct - that's where the money is though I suppose.

The planet I'm on is similar to Jeff's, but I was exploring and came across a large building with sign outside reading "USMC Penal Colony", not to mention there were a bunch of smaller buildings on the way with robots that shot lasers at me on sight.

Pretty freakin cool.

Nope, still don't get the appeal of these type of games. Someone is going to have to explain it to me one of these days because this all looks like interactive busywork.

@vuud: As a person who rarely gets selected for beta testing for games that I'm interested in, I like early access because I can buy it early and offer some input to help make the game better. In comparison, I see "pre-orders" for games at retailers as more of a scam than paying money straight to the developer for a steam key that allows me to play before and after it comes out.

Also, this game is rad and I already have about 10+ hours played running a private server with my friends where I play a robotic man named Spangler who adventures around the universe in a coal fueled space ship visiting planets and pillaging their resources.

It's hard to explain, because it is a lot of busywork.

It's sort of like a Robinson Crusoe kind of thing. You're castaway on this foreign land, and in order to survive you need to find food and build shelter, protect yourself form hostile wildlife. And then after you've got basic survival taken care of, you can start colonizing and expanding, and literally reshaping the environments to your will.

But hey, it's a kind of game that appeals to a certain kind of person. For the kinds of people who are into these games, the appeal is fairly self-evident. If you're not seeing it, it's probably just not your thing.

The same person did the art for both games. You think they should change everything up just so you aren't reminded of Terraria? The character art is quite different anyways.

What bugs me is that this is supposed to be a sci-fi take on something like Terraria, but it's almost the same exact game. Why, in a sci-fi setting, am I chopping down trees and making pickaxes?

@melodiousj: Oh the whole "start from scratch and build a world" sounds great. It's just that it manifests itself as a lot of holding the mouse button down whole you slowly scrape away rocks/wood/dirt.

It probably doesn't help that i really don't like crafting in games. Well not all games, the sort of "kill two rabbits make an ammo pouch" type of crafting that's in Farcry and Assassins creed i don't mind. But this and MMO style "collect stuff, take it back to crafting station, make new thing, repeat" type crafting i find extremely tedious. So when it's the core of the game then i have a problem.

It's sucks because these games always sound really fun on paper.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

I've noticed this and Darkout on Steam yesterday. Neat concept, and wonder why the the sudden splash of sci-fi themed Terraria--also wonder if pointless digging and fortress building can hold out just because its scifi. I need a story.

Starbound will have a story mode.

This game is potentially very cool but needs some tweaks. Way too hard at the moment.

This website works as intended. Without noticing I went to giantbomb.com, pressed play on the Quick Look on the front page, maximized it to full screen, and a few seconds in thought "wait, I'm watching a Quick Look? I don't recall choosing to watch this thing". I've been completely conditioned GB.

I love Terraria and this game looks really nice. Eventual PS4 release, I hopes! I love Minecraft as well, just wish it had the "depth" that Terraria and Terraria 2...errr...I mean Starbound do.

One man's "Junk" is another man's "treasure" .... that did come off as sounding a little "gay", but the point is made. Also, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with loving the same sex. Stop the hate.

@mister_v: I hear ya.

I actually did get kind of bored of Terarria on account of the amount of time spent holding down a mouse button and scraping away layers of dirt. This same problem hasn't happened to me with Minecraft, even though that game has even less actual gameplay and tons more digging and building for the sake of digging and building.

Maybe I should give Terraria another try.

Yes. It's way annoying. I assume a lot of people have lost some of their higher frequency hearing for so people to be complaining about it.

Terraria was nice in that I, just for a moment, glimpsed what was appealing about the minecraft genre of building things. But I didn't have the patience for the original and I don't see any indication this is different.

I don't hear shit, but I've been around artillery, concerts, and guns for a good portion of my life so I guess in this case hearing loss is a plus.

I enjoyed Terraria for a bit, but I was playing it single player and got bored after a while, once the progression sort of slowed down. Didn't feel like looking up too many recipes online.

I wonder if this will hold enough appeal and last longer. Maybe I'll get it on sale.
