I went and played some Zelda II after watching this quicklook, and goddamn I didn't notice quite how much this game is just straight up Zelda II.

Jeff, Zelda 2 is fucking garbage and anyone who likes it, according to my math, must also be garbage! What a terrible fucking game and a failed experiment. The combat was atrocious, the overworld map was pitiful and poorly designed, the translation was obnoxious. Go play it, Jeff! Play it and finish it! Finish it without a walkthrough!

If I could burn every copy of that game, I would. MURDER ZELDA 2!

@xbob42: Agreed unironically. I've never understood why anyone likes Zelda 2. It's a bad Zelda game and a bad platformer combined into one disgusting mess.

Pleasantly surprised with how this looks, may have to pick it up sometime. I am curious to see how much bigger the world gets.

Chibis are disturbing and deifies gravity, they raise some huge questions about the internal organs and overall reliability of the body.

I like the idea of having the kid doing the writing in the game. Sort of like Axe Cop

Also isnt all the Tales games 3d over world and 2d battles? Those still any good?

I will say both that this game looks pretty fun, and that the dungeon theme from Zelda II is one of the best dungeon themes of all time. Simple, but very, very catchy and effective.

I'm with you @brad. I have memories of a Q*Bert cereal myself during the '80s and swear I tried a box, though there seems to be little evidence on Google aside from others like us with similar vague memories. Maybe the sugar rush from eating too much C3POs, Pebbles, Pac-Man cereal and Nintendo Cereal System caused hallucinations in us as kids.

Yep, in addition to general gameplay mechanics, this thing is packed with Zelda 2 references. Seems alright, I might give it a go.

Yeah this looks pretty great. Zelda 2 is criminally underrated. I believe WayForward's Adventure Time game was also a Zelda 2-like, or at least that's how they described it to me when I was working there (I think I was working on DuckTales at the time so I wasn't on that project).

I love the concept of Zelda II, but goddamn that game's difficulty curve is just horseshit.

This game looks pretty great. The art style is cute, the combat seems simple yet ramps up in difficulty fairly fast, and the world seems just the right amount of bat-shit crazy to stand out. Not to mention the developer made the game with his daughter. That's just f'in awesome. :]

Am I the only one getting bizzare performance issues with this game? The is a horribly distracting micro-stutter which makes the reaction based challenges a real slog.

I almost bought an Adventure Time game because it was like Zelda II. I haven't seen a single episode of the show, and I've been annoyed by everything related to it that I've been exposed to. So this is way more appealing!

I just hope it comes to PS Plus or Games for Gold someday because I'm dead broke. And I'd rather not feel like an asshole for failing to support that developer's kid.

The Tales games are like the sports games of the RPG world at this point, solid iterations but kind of the same plot with a roster update. Worth buying one each couple years for solid game mechanics, but they are never mind blowing. Plus they always insist on having at least one super annoying kid character.

Yeah Adventure of Link was/is dope and this game definetly takes from it. Apart from the map screen to 2D combat, the leveling is also similar and learning sword moves from a guy in the basement is also a thing. The way the Bat enemy and those bug-like crawlers behave are likely also references. That wolf enemy that threw fire sticks might be inspired by those castle enemies that threw a bunch of stuff also.

Anyway, a cool and unique game, that Zelda II. This was also a cool game, though I can't see myself playing it right now.

That game was pretty good! It's like a way easier version of Zelda II with like a bunch of Adventure Time stuff crammed into it if you care about that (I didn't really but w/e) Alex reviewed it , if anyone cares enough

Zelda II is the best, though

Yeah that game wouldn't fly today, but at the time because the graphics, the music, the controls, the open world, etc, were all so cool, people were willing to overlook the.. frankly.. bad game design that relied on exhaustively searching the map and learning to avoid traps through massive amounts of trial and error. It felt like a game designed to sell Nintendo Power or strategy guides.

Also Zelda 2 was aight.....
