Quick Look: The Darkness II

Look real damn good, but will probably wait till the summer to hit it up.

I enjoyed the first Darkness a lot and was a little apprehensive to jump on board with this new one because of the art style and it not being developed by starbreeze. That being said I will probably go rent this tonight and hopefully it has enough aside from ripping gangsters to shreds to warrant a buy.

Not thrilled with this and what I've heard about it. Sounds like they stripped out a lot of the stuff that made The Darkness so unique, and the sequel is just a standard FPS w/ a gimmick.

Seems like a $20-$30 purchase at best for me.

I love how Jackie is so much more interesting in this than in his source material. In the comic he was pretty much a jr. high power fantasy of an unrepentant, murderous gangster whose weakness was that he couldn't have unprotected sex anymore.

Kinda bummed about this game. The combat is fun but they took away all the stuff I really liked about the first and added in a way more hokey story. Glad I only rented it.

I do like the new art style, though.

I think we have a new genre, First Person Dancing.

Jenny looks really short..odd...

Wait, didn't Jackie shoot himself at the end of the last game?

I'm confused. I never played the first one anyway.

That Jenny moment was awesome. I hope the game has many moments like that.

What exactly made The Darkness unique? I played that game recently, it doesn't really go past being an FPS in which you need to shoot out all the lights in the area. The Darkness wasn't even useful in firefights, except for quickly knocking out lights. I think the RPG elements here give this game a progression the first game didn't have, and the quad wielding actually makes you feel you got one up on all of your enemy's. They didn't strip out anything, they made it better.

My inner Darkness is voiced by Chris Tucker. Which really sucks.

After playing a little over 4 hours of the game, the story becomes more complex and interesting in some really cool ways. All the slow emotional scenes are seeming to have great pay-offs. So far it's a good FPS with a compelling story. Well worth the purchase and the comics that came with the LE are a real treat.

Looks great. I like my games to have some character intrigue to them, but FPSs typically don't, which is why I like the first Darkness so much. It was the most fun I had with a shooter's single-player campaign up until that point, and from what I can tell there's lots of personality in this sequel, too.

Yo Giantbomb! Are you guys still doing a Neverdead quicklook? Was really looking forward to it, cause you said it was coming last week.

@BrianP: Was it good enough to warrant a playthrough for about ten bucks? That seems to be the going price for a used copy these days.

This is actually pretty cool looking. I wasn't expecting these kind of story moments in a linear first person shooter.

Until I watched this I had almost zero interest in playing another The Darkness but this looks all right actually.

Like the RPG type stuff and the graphic style is very neat.

Oh geez! Not only does this game look nice, but the gunplay seems very satisfying. I'll be happy to continue gunnin' thugs down and dancin' with a dead lover in the future. Thanks for the QL, duders.

I absolutely loved The Darkness and seeing that this seems to have kept the spirit of the original makes me extremely happy. That dancing scene with Jenny was great and I feel like the original did those slow character moments better than pretty much any other game.

This looks pretty tight, enjoyed the 1st one, bit of a rough diamond. I think I'll wait for a sale on this one though.

This game looks pretty cool. Surprised to see some story stuff being a focus in a FPS. The Jenny part specifically is pretty awesome. Will be picking this up soon hopefully.

I had not planned to get this, even though I loved the first one. But now... I think I just have to. The way the first one tugged my heartstrings seem to return here, which very few games manage to do. I also like the ferocity and such of the Darkness moves. Using it should feel like you do something wrong, and it certainly looks that way. Now to hunt down the best offer. I think GreenManGaming has a good one...

Did the facial animations bother anyone else, or is it just me? Not as bad on normal faces, but more expressive people.. something really wonky is going on.

Man, the first one was great. I'm glad to see I won't be disappointed in the sequel. :)

On rails? I don't think that means what you think it means.

The storyline is interesting and those tender moments are pretty damn touching. The more I see of it the more I want to see more.

I have this game right next to me, but I'm watching this instead! What has my life become??
