Speaking to Nolan North's range, don't forget his role in Last of Us which is very nearly completely unrecognizable.

@alexthebehemoth: Same. If there was ever one game castrated by its hardware, TLoU was it for me. In fact, it pushed me towards being PC only even harder than longing for a new console generation.

Doubt if I'll buy a PS4 so doubt if I'll play TLoU 12" but I think I'll live.

Good QL.

Such an overrated game. A good game, but so overrated. This doesn't look nearly as good as some of the current gen games. Seconds after they said this Brad looks at a poorly texture wall clipping through another wall. Why people put up blinders for this game is beyond me.

I agree. This game has great graphics, an amazing story, terrific music, fantastic voice work, but mediocre and repetitive gameplay that is neither unique nor inventive. Just because the story is great and it looked good less than a year ago doesn't mean people should overlook its glaring flaws.

I take it Brad never played the Uncharted 3 multiplayer if he thinks it plays like a Gears of War knock-off.

This looks exactly like the PS3 game. I mean, the PS3 game looked fine, but holy shit does this highlight just how hilariously underwhelming the power of these new consoles are. Really, the only two gaming consoles you really need is are a WiiU and a PC. The WiiU at least offers you something that the other 2 machines can't on PC.

The look of this game has nothing to do with the power (or lack thereof) of the PS4. It's a PS3 game, there's only so much better it can look without re-designing it from the ground up. Was the Gamecube under-powered because the port of Ocarina of TIme didn't look much better than the N64 version?

Also, this video is 720p so obviously you aren't going to notice the improved resolution (half of what makes this version look better).

Yay! this is probably my favorite AAA release of last gen (Red dead Redemption? really? it was good, but there's a very long, very unnecessary and very weak section in the middle there, I was extremely bored and dropped it for months only to force me into picking it up and finishing it almost a year later. The same narrative disconnect open ended world vs the narrative of the game as in GTA).

I watched some 60fps footage on Youtube, and although it is probably an unpopular opinion, I thought it made the action look very strange. As if is was some sort of fast forward capture, and to me, it looked weirdly comedic, like one of those old three stooges silent movies. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it, but it seemed really awkward.

I'm struggling to decide if I should purchase it, though... 50 seems like a lot, and I loved it very muchly, but I can't imagine really playing it again. The only reason for me to get it would be the DLC, since I bought it, but I never got around to playing it. Maybe I'll wait till they drop it a bit... hmm...

PS... @danryckert you know that during the main story-line in the game you do play as Ellie, and she does have to fight infected on her own? And also from what I understand in the non flashback sections of the DLC you do too.... so.. that.

I really enjoyed this game, but I don't think I'd want to play through it again - and if I did the PS3 version is more than competent enough for my liking. This is a great idea though because of the numbers of people who seem to have made the jump from 360 to PS4 this generation and so didn't have the opportunity to play it on last-generation consoles.

I find it strange how many people seem to think they were expecting this to sell largely to people who had already played it, because I'd assumed it was aimed primarily at people who hadn't played, or couldn't play, the PS3 release. Some kind of upgrade scheme would have been a nice touch to earn some goodwill, but I think that was always intended more as a temporary measure just so people wouldn't hold off from buying any PS3 games in the months leading up to and just after PS4 launched if they were planning to upgrade.

Yeah, because every game has to be unique an inventive to be considered great? Nah, the gameplay was actually pretty good. I had some issues in the single player when the framerate dropped.. but other than that it accomplished everything it set out to do, gameplay wise.

I think the encounter design in single player was just so well done, no idea where people claiming it to be repetitive are coming from. Yeah, you're gonna shoot and stealth.. but it's about how those scenarios are constructed and how it lets you take two or three different approaches at times.

Personal preference plays a big role here- and I get that some people didn't like it. But that doesn't make it an 'overrated' game.

I am interested in how the GB community evaluates this game now that it is a year plus out. I don't want to trudge up bad shit honestly... I mean it did get game of the year. But I think the game was a bit affected by when it came out originally and the surrounding unique to this site depression. I felt it when i had bought the game as it came out.... I just was not in the mood for anything at all, but later i came back to it and was really into it.

Playing it again now I think this one has real lasting potential, people overlooked the way it updated survival horror (without ever saying it was in that genre) in favor of its story. I understand because that sticks out so huge in the gaming space, a real serious and well told story on par with cinema. But as a game it also made a huge leap towards making horror and survival work in gameplay better than anything before it.

Hey, I thought the last of us running at 60 fps would look weird/wrong to me and it does! Also, 50 dollars is too expensive for this, especially since I bought the last of us for ps3 digitally for 60 bucks and left behind for 15.

I want it but I don't need it. But since I haven't played Left Behind, I'm super tempted to do the Gamestop trade in offer and possibly try the multiplayer.

Is the mp as good as some people deep into it say?

You can't play The Last of Us on a PC.

This generation will only be worthwhile to those people that want certain exclusives. It's not the same market as when the PS3 and 360 came around, both consoles were very powerful at the time, more powerful than many top of the line PC's. This generation is more akin to the PS2 and PS1 days where the consoles are much more underpowered than even medium-tier PC's. The sad thing is that each system has very few exclusives, most games will be coming out on the PC, so it's not a stretch to say it's better to buy a PC than either console. And this is coming from a guy that owns a PS4.

I meant to play this when it was out but never got around to it, partially due to not being the head space to play such a bleak game. And when the PS4 came out there were enough rumors of a port I decided to wait for it. Can't wait to jump in, now.

You're not seeing much of a difference because it's captured at 720p60, the PS3 game ran 720p natively so even qualified eyes struggle seeing a difference. That's a huge issue with PS4 games and the equipment they have to work with, and an issue with all video content sites in general. Bandwidth and storage space is an issue, how much can you give away for content?

This game includes all the DLC, making it a very good deal compared to buying the PS3 version and the DLC separately. But of course, there's a gun held at the head to many people making comments on the internet, forcing them to buy every new game release at $60 or the trigger will be pulled. Get a psychological checkup ASAP.

Hmmm..I may be the red headed step child in this case but I think the 30FPS is better than the 60FPS. It feels more cinematic and suits TLoU better. It makes it feel more gritty. That's just me.

Man i could go for another Last of Us Platinum , i do wish you could just start on survivor though becuase that was a great way to play through it.

Also that multiplayer was my favorite of last year, nothing really like it and it can get really tense when you're the last one alive and up against thier full team but somehow taking all of them out was amazing. But Survivors is the game mode to play

Yay, Manhunt HD is finally out!

e: @cooljammer00 sure I can. Red Dead Redemption, Burnout Paradise, Persona 4: Arena, Yakuza 4, DJ Hero 2, The Darkness, Syndicate, Tales of Xillia, any Ratchet and Clank game except All 4 One, Injustice... I could keep going for days. Alan Wake.

@hassun It truly is Game Of The Generation for me. I liked it a lot more than GTA V, but I want more Western games in general, and it helped that it had the best Euphoria physics. GTA V toned them down for some reason.

The encounter the video starts off with really is the worst. This whole nighttime segment in Boston was easily the weakest point of the game for me, it just drags. The game immediately picks up again as soon as you head out of the city.

I'm dying to play this a) in HD and b) with Photo Mode, but $50... I'd do the Gamestop 50% trade-in but I don't want to give up my Survival Edition steelbook.

It depends on your definition of what the game of the generation is supposed to be which is always going to be subjective. For me personally innovation is certainly a bonus but it doesn't make or brake it. Last of Us is not on the top of my list but it's certainly second or third.

Why? Simply because I liked every aspect of it. I liked how the characters were displayed, I enjoyed the story a lot and most of all the gameplay felt great. I had a lot of tense moments, I died quite a few times and still felt like I had control over the situation. There is a lot of room to improvise, on the higher difficulties you often have to and it works which is why I played through it two times already and why I'm going to do a third run for sure. People are not blowing this game out of proportion simply because you didn't have a great time with it.

It's the reason why I don't like the word "overrated" because it's based on the notion that people are wrong to like something as much as they do because you don't. Also what do you mean with "without realizing what they are saying"? They're saying that they think it is among the best games if not the best of the generation. I agree. You do not. We can have a discussion on why we disagree but in the end both our opinions are equally valid.

Jeez some people really don't want to like a game because they want to be hipster or something

No game is perfect, no game will appeal to everyone and no game will execute perfectly on what it tries to aim for....

The few possible reasons why this game (at least in the comments here) gets so much hate is that complainers either haven't played it (literally with your own hands and not watching someone else demo it) or the game developers wasn't going for the type of game the complainers want.

No other game does what Last of Us does better.... I would love to know the game(s) that people apparently can compare Last of Us too that I either haven't played or known about (I am alive?! HA!)

But at the end of the day people on the internet will always complain about something... So I don't know why Halo is considered a good game nor the appeal of DOTA 2...

wait.. so.. you say the game sucks because it does what it intended to do very well? Or are you saying the opposite.. because the combat is quite visceral, particularly on harder difficulties, and it does reinforce the whole narrative of the game too...

No quite the contrary, they pushed the game as being this gritty survival story and every encounter will feel dangerous and important and then half way through the game you fight 20+ dudes at a time on a dozen occasions and it's completely over the top. They also totally force combat encounters in places where they don't need to be like like when you play as ellie and you're talking to the cannibal about stuff and then woops, here's a combat encounter! or when you're playing Joel still and you chase afterEllie on horseback, hop a fence woops combat encounter again!

Also the difficulty on harder difficulties is completely forced as well and unrealistic and again clashes with the whole tone of the game, the human enemies have infinite ammo, they sit and shoot at you two dozen times, you kill them and they each have 1 bullet on their corpse. Or when you use the bow and your arrow just vanishes, here's a little fact about arrows, THEY DO NOT BREAK THAT EASILY.

Then you have the telegraphed nature of combat, on for example the neighborhood level, you walk through this neighborhood, it all looks natural as a neighborhood should, then you come up through an alley way and there's a horizontal dumpster out in the middle of the alley, oh look, it's cover! Must be a combat encounter, then later in the level you walk out and turn a corner and there's a big street with horizontal cars everywhere. This is another constant problem with the game, nearly every combat encounter is telegraphed by overturned shelves or dumpsters or some other obvious cover object.

I found it impossible for me to focus on the story and positive aspects of the gameplay when I walk for 15 minutes and then encounter combat and then combat is artificially difficult because of unreal ammo shortages and arrows made of low grade plastic. The tone was so dark, gritty, desparate and real, but every single aspect of the gameplay is so forced, unrealistic and simply bombastic and gamey.

And it pisses me off to hear so much praise about the game while every negative aspect is ignored, even in this Quick Look, Brad says right off the bat, "this game was game of the year!" then "here's the encounter that made me not play the game for six months!" and then "oh it's maybe top 5 of this generation for me!"

It's silly at times.

@kmg90: Well, my main gripe with the game was the story, characters, and world. Just another cookie cutter post apocalypse survival story in the vein of The Walking Dead. Pretty bland and forgettable characters and I just never felt invested in the story or if Joel and Ellie lived or died.

I am not saying you can't have your opinion! I am glad people have different opinions. I am just saying that I feel like people overlook many things about this game because of the fact that it is Naughty Dog, because of the fact it was something to rally behind before the new console generation, and because of the fact that at that point in time, Sony fandom was at an all time high due to the controversy surrounding the Xbox.

When I said "People don't realize what they are saying" I meant that they don't pick their words carefully. As I pointed out, the speech surrounding the acclaim for this game is very hyperbolic. Within days of it coming out, people were calling it the best game EVER made. Think about that statement. It is a good game. No, I'll even say it is a great game. If someone truly believes that it is, sure. They can believe that and good on them. I am happy they enjoyed something that much. I just happen to disagree!

I agree with you that it is difficult to judge a game in the greater context of things until a certain amount of time has passed and sure some people were maybe a little too quick on this.

The Last of Us is by no means a perfect game, it is far from it but I have also read a great amount of often valid criticism even in this comment section. In the end the general consensus mostly seems to be that the positive aspects greatly outweigh the negative ones which is why you might get the impression that the negative points are being overlooked.

As for the fact that it is made by Naughty Dog that may have been part of it at first considering the success of Uncharted but there wasn't as much of a backlash as for let's say Bioshock Infinite and I was personally very surprised by The Last of Us because I could never get into the Uncharted games as much as other people seemed to. I thought they were good games but not more than that.

In the end I just strongly dislike the term "overrated" for reasons I stated in my last comment. So thanks for the clarification, I see what exactly you mean now.

I got you. Maybe I am being a little hyperbolic when I say overrated. I think it is fair to say that the general consensus on the game is that it is a "masterpiece" and I guess I just disagree to a certain extent. So yeah when I said overrated that is basically what I was referencing. I'm still probably going to Gamefly it on the PS4 to play it again and maybe my opinion will change!
