Playdate: Resident Evil 4 (08/23/2019)

Please do RE1 next, it's the most puzzly and frustrating one :P Would love to see Abby get through it.

Ps. but having seen her blaze through spots I used to find super hard in RE4 I'm pretty confident she'll just make me feel like shit about my RE1 skills :P

Seeing this game played all these years later again I gotta say, if not for the historical significance and paving the way for an assortment of future titles.. I would go as far as to say that RE4 is kind of a middling to often bad game. Great opening, but it sure goes downhill shortly after.

@humanity: I played it for the first time this year and had a good time but there are plenty of bad parts. It was ahead of its time and very much of its time. It feels so arcadey, and coming from 7 and 2 Remake wasn't what I preferred.

Abby should play the Ada DLC for RE4

@humanity: Can't say I agree, but I'm so far removed from a neutral opinion on it that I can't really speak about it apart from my own experience. What parts of it seem bad?

@lethalki11ler: 97 deaths and a 66% hit ratio are incredibly poor numbers for this game that actively dials down the difficulty when the players is struggling. RE4 isn’t bad, Abby was just bad at it.

Was this the Krauser fight where you can knife him and he just kinda dies? Or was that in 5? Or am I thinkin of something entirely different?

I remember absolutely nothing about the 2nd half of this game. Like at all.

It's weird, my video started at the end. Strange.

Yeah starts at the end and when I go further back in the video it just stops at a certain point and doesn't seem to want to continue.

I keep getting about 10-15 minutes into this video and then it skips all the way to the end.

Not exactly DLC. Separate Ways was added in the PS2 version of RE4 and was not in the Gamecube version. Same goes for Leon's gangster outfit and that crazy Plagas removal laser gun.

I hadn't played this since the Gamecube. The first third or so is incredible, but this play through puts a spot light on the rest of the game not being nearly as interesting.

I hope they check out some of the batch of FMV games that have been released recently soon, and eventually Abby gives Dead Space a shot.

Oh hey Dan can no longer ask questions watch how all of a sudden Abby suddenly turns into a pro and finishes this in the next eoisode, it's not like this games mechanics are archaic and Abby just isn't very good at it.

Resident evil 5 is way better than 4 thanks to the upgraded melee system allowing for more than just kicks and suplexes.

Nooooot a big fan of punishing Dan for talking... Especially since Alex is pushing it way too hard. Mayyyybe ease up on Dan guys. He's why a lot of us watch. Well, that and Abby losing her shit. #FreeDan!

That was a very entertaining RE 4 playdate series.

First time playing the game, I had the toughest time beating the Krauser QTE knife fight but do remember being just as annoyed as Abby and the crew were with the jet ski segment. Had the same problem with those sudden tidal wave kills happening right at the end.

I think if they do another RE game, it should be Revelations 2. It's asymmetrical co-op, so one person can be Barry Burton shooting big guns in typical Resident Evil style while the other person is a weird Russian little girl throwing bricks at zombies. It's also got Claire and Barry's teen daughter hitting things with a crowbar. I think they'd have a lot of fun with the format of it.

Dead Space is also a great choice. Probably the best realization of the more actiony RE mechanics.

People might be sick of it, but I really like watching Abby play survival horror games. Especially these kind of ones, where there's enough action that she's not uncomfortable the whole time, but she can still get spooked once in a while.

I think I'm good with no more RE content until either RE8 or RE3 remake gets made. If we gotta stick with Abby and survival horror, then let's give Dead Space a whirl next.

This was a fun series, despite RE4 not being that great of a game in my opinion, when I just played it last year for the first time. I also haaaaated that jet ski segement.

P.S. People complaining about them "bullying" Dan is getting about as tired as people telling how everyone seems to hate Jeff B on the Beastcast.

@vicious17: Yeah, the PC version (the Steam one, not the original janky PC version from 2007) has everything from all versions. I believe the extra stuff unlocks once you beat the game once.

@alistercat: I think "ahead of it's time and very much of it's time" is a really excellent way of describing it.

@the_nubster I think generally a lot of it is not that great but that is just due to how it has aged. Specifically a lot of the game feels like padding with plenty of sections that simply aren't really entertaining as much as they are busy work. The puzzles in RE games have never evolved past a very rudimentary "find diamond and put it in the diamond hole" premise. The only way they spice it up is by adding time restrictions and impeding you with increasing numbers of enemies while you have to solve "the puzzle." The much maligned RE6, which most fans label as "dogshit," is actually exactly like RE4 except it was made in modern times so people were much less tolerant of it's bullshit.

@humanity: Disagree entirely, I played it last year around Halloween and was continually surprised how much I enjoyed it and how much it held up still. Better than most 3rd person shooters today.

@humanity: A lot of it is filler but that's all RE games. For as great as they tend to be, pacing is not their strong suit. The main difference between RE4 and RE6 is that RE4 feels good to play. I've had three separate friends bail out of RE6 playthroughs with me because they couldn't handle the way it played. A lot of the frustration here is coming from this being Abby's first time playing it and only playing it once per week; the act of shooting and maneuvering around these fights is the joy of the game and getting a handle on that feels good, it's not the puzzles or story. My perception of the game isn't unbiased but I legitimately think RE4 stands up with the greats of the action game genre, and certainly above RE6.

Yes, a game from 2005 does show its age more than a brand new remake....

I get why Abby would make that comparison but it's kind of unfounded especially given how much better RE4 holds up than the PS1 RE games.
