I missed the bus to work because I was so emotionally invested in today. Yesterday's run was almost storybook in how it panned out. It would have been too perfect if Patrick beat Yama and Remo's seemingly insurmountable run.

Congrats Patrick, that was a hell of a bounce back after the gaming tragedy that was yesterday. This has been my favorite feature the last month, and I look forward to see what is next from you.

Beat Remo a-a-and Hail Remo? They said it couldn't be done!

@heatdrive88: Yeah, the different classes are interesting, but some are much better and some are downright useless, especially in solo play. Huntress is good, and I also like the Acrid for making solo runs. Get some health regen, some drones, some damage, and kite around like crazy.

Binding of Isaac is a much purer experience like Spelunky.

Yeah, for sure, Huntress and Acrid. They're not even OP, they're just the only classes that have any ability to kite effectively and stay away from all the mobs while solo. Everyone else is terrible. Sometimes you can cheese your way pretty far with the Enforcer if you're careful about when you switch modes, but I've still never reached the final level with him.

I'd go so far as to say the game isn't fun by yourself. I swear nothing scales at all based on number of players, and given how minimally player damage increases as you level up, it seems like literally the whole is balanced around you having 2 players (or more, I guess).

For as many tips I looked up playing as the Enforcer, I just can't kill the Magma Worm playing as him. It's frustrating because you just can't block him rushing down or up on you, plus you just don't have any way of evading the worm unless you're lucky enough for him not to crash down on you.

Congrats Patrick! Sad to see this feature go, but I really like Risk of Rain and will like seeing you and Alex take that game on.

Get good with the Mercenary and you're basically invincible at all times, even without being able to kite, and he scales insanely well with items. The Miner is similar but doesn't quite reach the same heights of godmode with good itemization.

But nah, the balance is fine for solo play, because you are getting all the items and exp for yourself instead of having to split them. The game is at its easiest when a ton of items are stacking on each other and synergizing together, so I'd say it actually gets harder once you go beyond 2 people because at that point you're generally splitting items up too much. 2 is probably the ideal for winning just because it means having a backup player in case of mistakes, but after you've learned the basics and unlocked some items, solo games are perfectly viable if not the best way to play.

The biggest barrier in the game, and probably its biggest balance problem, is really the fact that you practically *have* to unlock some of the better items before you can have consistently successful runs. Unfortunately, going into it on a fresh save file is just outright terrible because of how much you won't have access to.

If you're looking up suggestions for Roguelikelikelikes to play, why not try the original version of Spelunky? Might be fun for some perspective, at least.

Also I endorse you playing Risk of Rain. While I can get to the third level pretty consistently I almost immediately die as soon as I get there. I like a lot of what it is putting down, but holy hell does it enjoy throwing an overwhelming number of guys at you at all times. Also most of the classes are hidden behind rather difficult unlock requirements, something I'm not a fan of.

I've also had some success with the Engineer for similar kiting reasons as the Huntress/Acrid, but that's it. Some of the other classes can make for fun play, like Commando, Bandit, and Miner, but you eventually get overwhelmed without the superior kiting ability. There's just too many damn guys with too much health, even if you move quickly. Other classes like the Enforcer and Sniper just seem like no fun at all, even if you come up with a multiplayer strategy.

I wouldn't say the game is bad by yourself - the core combat is still pretty fun, even with the less-than-optimal classes - but it's definitely unbalanced and it sucks that kiting and hoping for good items is really the only viable strategy to make it through.

Awesome job. This really was a fantastic feature. I'm surprised how quickly it became one of my favorite features on the site, as well as just how quickly you got really, really good at the game. I still have no interest in playing it myself but I can absolutely see why so many people think so highly of it.

Maybe consider Don't Starve next, or down the line at some point? That's another game i've always been intrigued by, and if anyone can delve into a game who's rules are somewhat obfuscated and make its workings clearer to a wide audience it's you.

Keep up the great work, Patrick.

I keep reading the title of this segment as "Spunkin' With Scoops." I would probably watch that if there were some chicks in it too... or if Patrick shaved his legs at least.

Grats! :D

My vote for next feature is Scoops' Fortress. It took me several tries and many dwarf deaths to get a functional fortress running, but the feeling of satisfaction when you make a working water treatment plant…or when your first craftsdwarf goes insane because you can't find out what rare gem they need to complete their artifact, and they rampage through the dining room screaming gibberish and wrestling with dogs… There's nothing quite like DF. =]

PS: I highly recommend the DF skin Ironhand, if you're not a fan of the ASCII.

It's hard to imagine a game more well suited to a feature like this than... well, this-! So I'm almost sad to see it end. But you done good, Scoops.

Congrats Patrick! I hope this might mean the return of Spookin' with Scoops, I really need you to come back and do a couple episodes of that before moving on to a brand new feature. Unfortunately nothing new and notable has been released since your last Spookin', but I'm sure you can dig out some old gems that you've been wanting to check out!

Kind of regret that I saw this on the site! Usually I watch the twitch archive sometime between stream and upload. Later watching it than usual; a little anti-climactic when the video description gave it away.

Anyway, fantastic end to what was a great feature. In a strange way, I'm glad it's over. The last couple of days, as tense as they were, were a lot less interesting to watch just because of the lack of commentary. Lots of dead spots in that regard. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely understand the reasoning for it: to accomplish your goal and beat Yama, you really needed to focus. Still a little disappointing, because Spelunky is cool but I come for the Scoops. I was kind of dreading you not being able to beat Yama, and going through days of the focus heavy streams that were light on commentary.

You're so, so much better at carrying a solo video like this with your commentary than you were in some of the earlier Spookin' with Scoops videos -- I truly, truly enjoyed listening to you as you went about learning the game and trying out new strategies and the like. Really looking forward to whatever game you do decide to stream next. Oh, and congrats!

And, actually, one last thing: this many streams and only one Dave Lang day? Shock and outrage. Shock. And outrage.

Gonna be sad to lose out on the 'leaderboard" experience when he moves on to other Roguelikes; Spelunky's leaderboards are the first I've ever cared about, and I'm only playing against a couple of friends.

But congrats, Scoops! I went and pushed through to beat Yama myself last week because of this feature, and I probably only succeeded because I learned quite a lot of techniques from you and the rest of the Chicago crew.

The same day Scoops beat Yama, I made it to hell and up to Yama for the very first time...where I was knocked down from the very top of the level by a bat. I had a perfect setup going but it just wasn't meant to be.
