Playdate: Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic - Part 02

Man, I remember this game being pretty well written back in the day, but now it mostly just seems silly. In a very good way though, enjoying this video series a lot. :)

@vinny this is just D20/DnD 3.5 rules. It is why the combat is really weird, it has initiative order and rounds, but just pretends it is in realtime. Then it has to correct to make things fit the dice rolls in the background. It is funny how you can really see some of the Mass Effect in there.

I feel that I should mention that skills are either class skills or not class skills, so you don't usually spread skill points out like in more modern games. Skill points are a straight up bonuses to the skill check.

Jade Empire is cool! Like this, a few technical/design aspects are obviously dated but it still has these unique characteristics that let it really shine. A more fleshed out modern incarnation with better combat would be amazing, however extremely unlikely it is to happen.

Enjoying Navarro(s) of the Old Republic though.

Really hope you play through the rest! So many charming, goofy moments in this game that await you.

This! This was a game I never got through and I'd love to experience this via Giant Beast.

I hope if they decide to bring this feature back, they play the Xbox version via back-compat, which properly scales the text and UI.

As is, they’re basically playing the worst version of the game (PC version without mods). I played the game a few years back and got widescreen running fine, but could never get any menu/UI scaling mods to work.

Really do hope they continue this! Also KOTOR 2 if possible =)

I would eventually love to see a Jade Empire series, once the kotor games are moved on from. Watching these two play Jade Empire is 100% the only way I will ever experience anything from that game.

Has Vinny or Alex noticed that Carth is Kaiden?

The Law and Order noise/Gungan pun was good enough to justify an entire playthrough of KOTOR and KOTOR 2.

It is pretty cool to see KOTOR after not having played it in years and seeing just how much of the groundwork for Mass Effect you can see being laid with it.

This is great. However I am having a lot of trouble reading the dialogue. The text is pretty tiny. If you guys wouldn't mind reading it out or giving the condensed version of it that would be nice.

Definitely wouldn't mind a full playthrough of this, since it's in that tier of "game I wish I could play but realistically never will so I'll just live it vicariously". But also I really hope @benpack brings back Dragon Age Origins and the adventure of Jane Leno.

@alex The Mandalorians are basically like the Krogan, they love to fight. Every BioWare game has a warrior type people.

Yup - in the first video of this series, as soon as Carth appears in his cutscene, Alex exclaims, "Oh hey, Kaiden!"

Yo, I like me some KOTOR one just fine, but getting Alex/Vinny playing through KOTOR II would make my year!

I really hope he sticks with this game but I also need to warn them to make multiple saves! It's an old game and you can get caught in an auto-save right before a boss fight and not be ready!

I think this game was the first RPG I played, and now looking at it as an adult I wonder how I actually enjoyed the combat. I'd love to see some Jade Empire, I finished that game twice and remember very little of it

I remember the first time I played this game being so disappointed that you couldn't use a light saber right at the beginning of the game. But then when you were finally able to it was so much of a payoff that I knew they had made the right decision to make the player work their way up to it.

Although the graphics are very clunky, the story and mechanics of this game were so enjoyable it still remains one of my all-time favorites. I'd love it if Bioware just remade this game in the same way Capcom has remade RE2 and 3.

My only fear is that Alex doesn't have the patience for an old-school RPG like this. Mass Effect had more action, but even with that game he was always eager to get through the story beats and back to the fighting. Some players want to dive into as much lore and story as possible while others just want action. I think Alex falls more into the latter camp.

This has been my favorite game of all time on and off for nearly two decades so it's fun seeing it played out again, however if Vinny and Alex are going to play around with Bioware games, I would love to see a few episodes of Jade Empire. I honestly don't recall anything of that game. I mean it's been 15 years since release.

I am always down for some Vinny and Alex, though I kind of wish it was Vinny playing cause he would be more likely to bring out the Darkside in Bron Starrrrr then Alex will.

@vinny@alex It's a shame, but between the alien dialogue and the teeny tiny subtitles, this is really difficult to watch on a TV. Hope there's some stable mods that would work to improve things but I would so love to see you guys explore this game! Maybe something like this?

God that Sith Party is so much dumber than I remembered.

I'm trying so hard to remain interested in this series because even though I've never played it, I've heard nothing but great things about this game over the years and a Mass Alex style playthrough sounds like exactly my bullshit. But...it's just not doing it for me. I'm sure it's the old "I have no nostalgia for this" chestnut rearing its ugly head, but still. I'm sad that I can't make myself stay interested in this playthrough.

@youeightit: Taris is kinda slow, but once the game opens up I think it gets way better. Although I do also have a bunch of nostalgia with it so take that evaluation with a grain of salt.
