@danryckert For reference, Vinny is correct. You cannot activate the power of the red shine without owning it, which means it already had to be in your cup, so it had to be swapped with the others.

Regardless of all of that, that is how all of the previous red shines have been played as well.

@tjhall42: Eisenhorn! That shit has some fantastic, not to mention deeply tragic character development. And it lead to the even better Ravenor series. Out of which we got the protagonist for "The Emperors Gift", which has to be one of the very, very best 40 K books written.

Exactly. To further confuse Dan: This is the same ruling as a reaction in D&D or a triggered effect in Magic the Gathering. It only occurs after it's condition is met. In this case, claiming a special shine activates/triggers the special power, which happens after you've claimed it.

@lemonadepack: I was going to use that argument to argue the opposite. The red shine's trigger isn't putting it in the cup/claiming it, the trigger is "entering the field" (i.e. drawing it from the machine). Dan fucked up and put the shine in his cup before trading cups so I'm fine with how it worked out, but future shines IMO should be handled where the effect is activated and then the shine is claimed. Unless I'm mistaken, the effect of the red shine is to trade cups, not to trade shines.

Dan's way of handling the red shine is fine, as long as it is consistently applied throughout the game. Is it the act of turning the nob that starts the swap, or putting the shine in the cup? Either way, Dan put the shine in the cup so he has to give it up. And as others have said, that is how the other red shine was played too.

Also... USE THE SPRAY TO SLOW DOWN, NO YOU CAN'T GO BACKWARDS BUT YOU CAN MAKE TIME TO STEER.

Vinny is right. If Dan is choosing to trade his shines, that includes the red shine he just got. Though, I will say it should have been outlined in the rules and then it wouldn't be a discussion. Dan loves crafting rules, I'm surprised it wasn't!
