@dannyodwyer I'm pretty sure the yellow tab EA games are the ones that were reverse-engineered by EA to get around paying Sega their license fee.

No ones explored these ideas? Motherfuckers act like they forgot about Ghost Trick! It's not a one to one comparison to this but in it you are a cool dude ghost that possessed objects and scare folks and it's fucking badass.

Huh. Might've liked this back in the day, but no memory if I ever saw it in a rental store.

This has been a great series. Looking forwards to whatever Bakalar, Jason and Jess end up picking next year.

Wow, what a great pick. Don't think I've really seen anyone talk about this game (and I've only played it once or twice in the past myself).

Weirdly enough, a few years ago I was trying to explain an old flash game to my girlfriend that was the same kind of "possess objects and scare people out of a house" game. She immediately says "like Polterguy?"

Wow, never saw this at the video store. I would've enjoyed this as a 90s teen as I've always liked indirectly terrifying NPCs (ex: Arkham games, Ghost Trick, Mark of the Ninja, and even Beyond: Two Souls).

I saw this game all the time at my rental store. I don't know if I thought it would be too scary or what (was 7 or 8 at the time), but I NEVER rented it.

@tartyron: It’s been years, but almost no characters in Ghost Trick ever become aware that you’re “haunting” their area, right? Like they’re blissfully unaware, and usually you just possess some mechanical device or whatever to accomplish something.

So I’d count this game as different from Ghost Trick because Ghost Trick isn’t horror/spooky at all. This game is like some horror-for-children Goosebumps style thing, while Ghost Trick is like “what if Capcom made Patrick Swayze’s Ghost but it was more anime.”

@bisonhero: Some of the characters do become aware of you. The cop girl and the dog become allies and talk to you directly (partly because the girl keeps dying and you discus things in the afterlife before resetting time. I believe the villains become aware of you too by the end, but I don't know for sure.

Anyway, I think you are right that they are pretty different when looked at in greater detail, but I still argue that the basis of a player controlled ghost haunting items to manipulate the living works as a decent descriptor of both, and as such I'm declaring us both right. Everyone wins! Internet solved!

I rented this game and had fun with it back in the day. Tecmos Deception scratched a similar itch years later.

Great video. Look forward to the next one.

The EA Genesis carts are shaped like that because they didn't want to license the "official" design from Sega. Basically, if any Genesis game didn't look like the others, it's because the publishers would rather build and design their own cartridges than pay Sega any more money than absolutely necessary.

This game was so good and weird. I remember seeing ads for it in old EGM and Gamepro magazines back then. I never got to play it until I got into emulating ROMs. It's pretty good!

This content is so great, I just wish they were like 3 times longer so I could miss something important or what have you because I got lost in the nostalgia. Again, I absolutely love this and will happilty take what we get but if this was and hour I would plan elaborate deep fried meals to consume alongside them! The picks of games so far has also been so relatable to my own either by force, or convenience, or choice history of weird or obscure games that due to circumstanse got a lot of miles from me! Keep it up GB! Can not wait for Jess, Lucy, Jason and ... Dannys own... please add more folks to this. I would pay more for seeing 1 hour plus of what game, did what to who for a lot of people in the extended GB universe. Like when we got to hear Brad purr when Dave Lang described developing Wrestlinggames for the N64. I became a man that day.

COVID has completely screwed the prices on used games. I picked up a complete copy of Haunting for $60 in mid 2020, it's doubled in price since then (as has everything else 8 and 16 bit under the sun).

Good game though, completely unique.

A very interesting choice. I never played it, but in the dark recesses of my mind, it seems familiar. I don't think I've seen it played on youtube before. It reminds me of the day camp I used to go to in the summer as a child.

Great to see Danny and Tam in a video again. I'm stoked for the return of Borne to Run next year. Maybe they took the opportunity to film some weird extra scenes while they met up.

My dad also used to buy me games just out of the blue sometimes, and he had a real knack for just picking awesome games I'd never heard of. He bought me Solar Jetman once, and it's one of my all time favorite games to this very day. Seems like it's a fatherly duty to expose kids to games they'd never buy or find. He also got me some bootleg NES games somehow... Man of mystery, my dad. Not as mysterious as Polter Guy of course.

I borrowed this game from a friend when I was a kid, and I loved it! I remember getting to the last haunt, where you get the dad to run and it was IMPOSSIBLE. Everything drained your ecto immediately and then you'd be thrown back into the underworld to collect more, and everything drained your health super fast, so I never ended up beating it.
