Still looks stiff like Fallout but if I had to play a Fallout game I'd definitely play this.

Am I a bad person if I just skip New Vegas at this point and play this instead?

Calling someone a bad person for that is ridiculous. That said New Vegas is a fantastic game, but it's also a old game at this point. You should play the new and shiny. If you have the time at some point check out NV.

Something about the dialogue in this rubs me the wrong way. They're trying to be funny but it just doesn't work for me

I think what makes the face look stiff is because they didn't use facial capture but has the high-res cutscene rendering feel, so people tend to expect more nuanced facial expression, while they are probably just using a composite of blend shapes.

If this is actually New Vegas 2 with recurring characters then perhaps you might want to play New Vegas to get the lineage, but it's 100% not. All you need to know is to expect a lot of dialogue choices.

For me, the only thing that's really off is how slow people blink. Weirdly slow. On-drugs slow. That's what makes it look stiff and weird to me. I'll just try to ignore it, the rest of the facial animations look great to my eye.

Its weird hearing reviews say the combat isn't very good when the game appears to be heavily combat focused. Cant wait until tonight though.

This seems really neat, I'm looking forward to trying it out! Game Pass means it's day one for me.

I think this is just a me thing, but between Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Mass Effect I've realised I actually struggle with companions. On the one hand I want to bring everybody along so that I can hear what they have to say, so I get choice paralysis.

On the other hand, I don't actually want anyone else alongside me for combat sequences unless their interaction is pre-scripted, so I'm inclined to just go about by myself. I'd love games to include an option for party NPCs to just be present for dialogue and wandering but disappear during combat (unrealistic, perhaps, but I can deal with that).

@y2ken: so use the lone wolf perk that buffs you for not using companions

I am one of 3 people who actually prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas (come at me!). However, The Outer Worlds looks like a mash of Fallout and Mass Effect and I am all in.

Jeff asked what a psychopath run looks like, and that is what I've been asking since it is how I am most interested in playing this game to see if it breaks at some point or lets you keep going, but today IGN showed off a "kill every one who looks at you wrong, and everyone else" play through and it seems pretty possible.

I also kind of laughed when Brad said "No one is going to play it that way" because I have been thinking ever since I saw this game how I don't want to play it like a Fallout game (or a Mass Effect if we're being pedantic).

I almost feel like I've played this game having seen 2 quick looks, a quick look EX, 2 hours of IGN playing it, several reviews, and several preview videos of mostly the starting area. I love the way this game was announced, and released a few months later. Like holy shit, more of that, please. I don't want to spend half a decade agonizing over a game's development.

If Brad truly loves divergent dialogue, he needs to play disco elysium. I never played planescape torment, but DE has some mind bogglingly deep dialogue trees.

Yeah the difficulty is most definitely too easy in this game. It seems that instead of making things take 200 shots in the harder difficulties like they would in fallout/ES, enemies just gun you down instantly. Which is a better way to deal with difficulty imo, but as long as you're ambushing well and taking cover it's pretty easy even on hard. The hardest difficulty seems like a different beast, since AI companions have perma-death and their AI results in them just running in and falling over constantly.

That being said, this game is so very exactly what I wanted. Like, it would be hard for it to be any more exactly my shit.

Looks good I'll probably pick this up in December. It looks a good game to play over the winter.

I played an hour and a half so far and I'm really digging it. It's the type of game I enjoy in the type of setting I enjoy. The writing is pretty good so far. Even the character creation screen, which is done as a bit of story in which this scientist revives you from cryo-sleep, has flavor to it. Altering your starting skills and attributes results in a little bit of dialogue about how smart/strong/dumb/oblivious your character is.

The time slowing mechanic is explained as a side effect of being in a cryogenic pod for too long. The shooting feels good and I've already acquired 4 basic weapon types pretty quickly. I decided to take Brad's advice from the Bombcast and play on hard, which is challenging so far.

Regarding Game Pass PC, you can get it out of the windows store still. The new app is largely a front end that provides a launcher UX more in the style of Steam, EGS or a console. The main difference is it shows stuff like the friends list, achievements and the like, and a more conveninent way to get a big list of which games are part of game pass. It feels very beta, and they make that very obvious, but it still feels more useful than EGS in many ways. (though I noticed Epic did finally add some ways to filter/search your library at least)

Also despite game pass PC being a thing, I think any games that are "universal apps" like Gears 5 and Outer Worlds are accessible regardless of which game pass you have, so you can probably still get it with just the Xbox one.

But how will you understand the story continuity?

Same. Regarding not feeling it, at least. I know why and they don't need to write anything up for me.

I'm just personally not that interested in these dialogue box adventure games at the moment. There was a time that I was. These days, I just can't get invested in them. That part of this Quick Look where Brad says "I don't want to hear this guy's life story." is me with every interaction. And the shooting, loot, and progression I've seen in this and other gameplay videos seems kind of lacking.

That said, I'm glad folks are digging it. It's been a while since a good one of these has come along. And I'll likely give it a chance anyway once I get Microsoft's janky-ass store to recognize my devices again and install it through Game Pass.

Wow, these guys have nothing but great things to say about this. Seems lovely! I think I don't have the energy to start a big new RPG but I'll keep this one in mind.

When GOTY time comes, it seems like it's going to be Outer Worlds vs Outer Wilds.

@nyx31moon: Wait, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic but in case you aren't, the people you responded to were being sarcastic. There is absolutely 0 continuity between the two games. Different universe, characters, setting, everything.

It's a totally new IP, and they wouldn't want to risk trouble from Bethesda if they did want to do a sequel.

I can be pretty inept at detecting text sarcasm, so I took those comments at face-value. Even though what you just said makes a lot more sense. Ha. Anyway, thanks.

Feel like I'm the exact opposite boat as the GB crew. I never liked these types of games all that much until Fallout 4 which improved the genre in every way I care about: rewarded for collecting in building your town, legendary loot drops and the combat really made that game enjoyable. I also loved the story and companions.

In contrast, everything in Outer Worlds feels extremely basic. I don't want to explore anymore because it's the same items and weapons in every area. The whole "stealing" mechanic is a joke and ruins the entire game balance. The combat is just okay -- I prefer VATS to slow-mo. There's just nothing in it I haven't seen done before and better. The whole opening scenario is also extremely trite and I couldn't care about either side. Still very enjoyable game with neat art direction and good dialog. I just don't get why this is so celebrated and Fallout 4 was discussed as a disappointment by so many. I must be looking for different sort of stuff in these games.

That all said, props to Rorie for making this game on his own while doing support at GB!

The hype is real with this game. Pretty much, the Outer Worlds is what a true sequel to Fallout New Vegas would have been, and what Fallout 4 should have been. The moment you touch down on the planet, the world, the characters, and the writing will grip you. And even the combat has been streamlined and is better than any Fallout game. And then there is the soundtrack. Simply put, this game is a contender for GOTY.

The ultrawide support for this game is trash for anyone who is wondering.

I kinda feel like i've already played this game before.
