The runtime of the video kind of gives it away. Maybe there's some way you can hide it. It'd be silly to add an hour of just a black screen, but if that's what you have to do.

Dunno but I get the feeling that they made this to honor Austin Walkers legacy for some funny reason. And picking up the flamethrower less than 2 min in...things are off to a good start.

I appreciate Giant Bomb playing through all the old games I've always wanted to experience but have no patience for, like Castlevania, Mega Man and Contra.

I think these games are cool to watch but I just don't understand Gerstmann's affection for old games. My patience runs out in about 5 minutes.

I like the concept of this one. One run a day (or however often), steadily improving until they beat it.

Welp, can't wait for episode 200.

Saying it's aiming to be a complete game in one sitting and then calling it 'Contra - Part 01' gave it away for me, before I saw the runtime.

What a great name for a series.

You do learn to appreciate the nice difficulty curve of Contra.

This was not the run.

If they only ever play this on stream, I imagine this might take a while. I think NES Contra is generally regarded as a fairly attainable 1CC (or 3CC, or whatever), but you still need to learn all of the stages and bosses, which takes some time. No idea if 2-player will make it harder or easier.

Super happy to see GB genuinely attempt some arcade-style games without cheats or just credit feeding to the ending; that's where all of the challenge and replayability actually comes from!

I always felt proud that I beat Contra on the NES just a few weeks before the 30-man code hit my neighborhood. It gave me a false reputation of actually being good at video games among my peers! It was way easier to do in single player.

Anyway, @vinny and @danryckert, some tips from watching you guys:

• Don't spam the spread gun. Due to what I assume are the limitations of the NES, the spread gun is less effective that way because the game can only handle around two full spread shots onscreen at any one time. Any shots after the initial two are of reduced effectiveness, which is why it looked a little wrong to you at one point.
• The machine gun powerup lets you hold the fire button. One of you had it and was still mashing B. Contra III on the SNES made this the default gun.
• The Rapid Fire powerup is a modifier for whatever current weapon you're using. It simply affects the speed of your shots onscreen. It does not overwrite your current weapon. I can't remember if you lose rapid fire when you get a new weapon; my memory says that you do lose it, but it's been a while.

For the next episode, I think I want to set the over/under of how many times either of them say 'this is the run' or a variant close enough to it.
