I'm conflicted. I like Borderlands, but I dislike Tiny Tina.

Edit: Picked the game up and spent the last three days playing a stupid amount of it. Tiny Tina is very tolerable. I think this is the best Borderlands game they've made.

@nillock: What if I told you Borderlands is just Tiny Tina now?

I thought Tiny Tina was cute in Borderlands. And I even thought her DLC mission which this full game is based on was fun. But I think they are now overdoing it with this character, kind of like how they over did it with Handsome Jack. Seems like they have a habit of overusing characters that gain a little bit of popularity. Moxxi is slowly becoming another example.

I actually like the look of this and Borderlands can be fun to play with a friend but the constant dialogue interruptions, especially from Tiny Tina, are a huge turn off.

@itsahme: If the site's player isn't working for you, make sure your ad blocker is disabled for GB. I had to make exceptions for GB in uBlock and Ghostery to get the site's built-in player to work.

Wow, I don't know what I was expecting from the cinematic trailers, but a light fantasy skin of Borderlands is not it.

mechanically I've always like the Borderlands games (and they first one had an...ok tone) but hearing someone say butt stallion in the opening cutscene makes me want to die, I wish they would let literally anyone else on earth write these games

Also Call of Juarez Gunslinger did a fantastic version of the unreliable narrator-type story and it deserves more credit.

Borerlands has always been fun to play, but you almost have to play it without dialogue because it's always been so, so bad.

I've always been able to handle the Borderlands writing, but it's always been very hit-or-miss. I think the biggest issue, especially by the time B3 came along, is that they became more confident that everything they were writing was the funniest shit to the point where almost every other line is trying to be funny, and it's more constantly in your face, and it makes it all the more noticeable when it's not landing.

That said, I've always enjoyed how these play, and they're a fun game to co-op in. I'd like to see a little more from the late game (I'm very curious if you do get additional skill trees as you get further in, I seem to recall them talking about cross-classing at some point too), but I think I'm probably on board with this from what I've seen so far.

I know she's not her characters, and she's probably a perfectly nice human being in real life, but between Aloy and Tiny Tina I'm really starting to dread hearing Ashly Burch's voice in a video game.

I think I’d like to see a quick look of this 3-4 hours in. I imagine (or hope) there are more compelling and fun examples of fantasy based items, ideas, etc as you progress.

It blows my mind that there is any form of sentient life that doesn't find Tiny Tina to be god awful and horribly irritating. As funny as a war crime tribunal and utterly relentless on top of that.

What I think some people don't realize about Borderlands is that there's a huge, huge, crowd of people that love the writing in those games. I've had multiple people at work tell me they play them for the characters, there's plenty of fans caring about the fate of the Roland and whatever of the world, some people think Tiny Tina and Claptrap are the funniest shit, etc.

I hate the writing in this, I do like the gameplay just fine as a looty shooter that doesn't force online down my throat like Destiny, but Jeff's surprise at the fact that they're doubling down on "butt stallion", a joke that was already tired when it was written ten years ago, comes down to the fact that plenty of folks enjoys these tired jokes. It would be too easy for me to judge, humour is subjective and all, I've been in many conversations where people repeating jokes from these games is the height of hilarity, but I don't get it either.

These games are way better once you turn the volume down by like 90% and just have a podcast on or music playing

Yeah... I'm sad to say I'm one of these people. I don't think it's laugh out loud hilarious all the time, but the majority of the games give me a pretty good sensible chuckle and I do think Tina is the standout character of the series.

Hmm.. i actually think this game graphically looks nice, but maybe i'm just a sucker for pretty green trees and blue skies :D

As for the constant barrage of characters speaking, i'm not opposed to it but it reminds me of those japanese bullet-hell games where characters are constantly being triggered to speak against you, but the gameplay itself is way too intense to really follow the conversation. I feel like this game is the western version of that.

Oh and whirlwind attacks are always fun. Good on this game to include that.

I could be wrong, but I think every Borderlands game has had an almost entirely different team of writers. Anthony Burch helped on the Pre-Sequel as well as 2, but I can't see any staff crossover on any other games.

I suggest this because it might explain why these games have such inconsistent writing - yeah it's mostly bad, but it's inconsistently bad too. I've hardly ever meet a fan of this series who liked the writing of 1 & 2, or 2 & 3, or the Pre Sequel.

There just doesn't seem to be a consistent authorial voice in these games, but maybe I don't hear it because I turn the voices down XD
