Unfinished: Assassin's Creed Odyssey 08/22/2018

Ben takes Brad to ancient Greece to take in the sights. See the beautiful water, the countryside, and a snake lady with a staring problem.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Had a chance to visit the Quebec office and played 8 hours in beta:

1. the gameplay is really fun

2. the world looks pretty great

3. kassandra is the better voice acted character

4. it doesn't feel like assassins creed at all (expect the similarities it shares with Origins)

5. the territory system is going likely to feel repetative

6. if you liked the witcher 3, and/or Shadow or Mordor, youll like this game.

Maybe not the...best gameplay footage you could have used. I now know why E3 demos are practiced exhaustively before they show them off

Not sure if I want to get this or not, I liked Origins and this seems pretty much the same but not having Wrist blades seems a really poor move How can it be Assassins Creed with no wrist blades, I know the very early parts of Origins didn't have the wrist blades but that was story reasons you eventually got them, but this seems its going to far in the wrong direction.

So wait, what's their justification for straight up Medusa? Are we going with glitches in the animus, the game designers of the animus put in bosses for more appeal after they started straight up selling animus memories as games somehow, lots of those ancient race artifacts that just turned everyone into greek monsters, or have we given up on the historical/animus thing, abandoned all pretense and just agreed that it's more fun to stab Medusa than soldiers?

I remember seeing some Origins on a stream here where the main dude was in the afterlife and shot arrows at a big crocodile dude, too. I'm not complaining, I'm just not sure what page the designers are on here.

Not watching this since I have already seen some short parts of gameplay on youtube (don't wanna spoil myself too much) but I'm incredibly excited for this! Origins was awesome, took me like a 100 hours and I got a platinum, it was a joy all the way through. According to the director this is even longer and bigger than Origins! And the added rpg elements, branching dialogues etc. I'm so into all of it! I'm so happy that we can finally choose a character and play them all the way through. (Hated the fact in Syndicate that the gameplay was shared between Evie and Jacob, just let me play Evie all the time) Totally gonna choose Kassandra, she seems way more interesting than Alexios. It's cool that there will be a reversible cover so you can have your favorite character on there.

Apparently Ubi said there will not be an AC game next year which makes sense and I'm glad next installments we'll get even more time considering how Origins and Odyssey took 3-4 years and were developed simultaneously. (maybe the next game will be cross-gen) I can kinda get why so many people say this looks like a reskin of Origins (similar UI, ancient times) but it's definitely disingenuous and not fair. Anyway, not long now, can't wait! This might read like fanboy post and damn right it is, I'm just so so hyped for this! Odyssey and Red Dead are probably my 2 most anticipated titles!

This looks really fun. It seems like the series is getting to just be a straight-up open world rpg set in historical settings, which I'm 10000% on board with. Skill trees, selection of player character, dialogue options, gear grinding. This is basically what I want out of an RPG, and if I get to "cavort like the greeks of old" mass effect style it'll be pretty dang close to my ideal videogame.

The justification is actually that Pieces of Eden (A precursor artifact with great power) create these monsters (IE Medusa). It's unclear if they are illusions or projections, or if they corrupt living people into monsters.

In the Curse of the Pharoahs DLC, Bayek visited different versions of the afterlife, which were all constructed as an illusion by an Apple of Eden, which is a Piece of Eden.

In AC Origins, the player fought against Gods (Sobek, Sekhmet, and Anubis). In weekly events, which were justified as "Animus Glitches".

I built a PC last year basically so I could play the last game at 4k and 60 fps and it didn't disappoint. That game is still one of my favorites to fire up and just play for a few hours since it is still going to take me a long time to 100% it and I haven't even done the DLC. I am super excited for the new game and can't believe how good the next few months of games are going to be between this and shadow of the tomb raider and just cause 4 there just has never been a better time for open world games. They killed it in Origins so I can't wait to play Odyssey although from what I've seen it all just looks like Athens and I spent a LOT of time in that area in the last game.

It was just a total blast to grab a warhammer and smash huge cans of paint and watch oil go everywhere as you are also blasting away dudes and smashing them violently with said warhammer. The fact that you weren't just stuck to one particular set of weapons or forced to go around stabbing (I didn't get the hidden blades until 20+ hours in I think) and had so many other cool ways to kill made the game one of the best satisfying open world games I have ever played. Getting attacked by 6 hippos at once as guards chase you down on chariots only to get attacked by said hippos as you watch them shift their focus to the large 1000 pound creatures ravaging them and their carts as you pull out your fire sword and finish the job. I think I was at about 70 hours into the game and I wasn't even 30-40% of the map. I seriously could not get enough of Origins and am beyond excited for this game more than most people and think maybe I need to finish the first one but damn WoW just came out and that is taking all my energy.

I somehow do not have access to the 3000 images I uploaded to their service ... which is a huge shame because the photo mode is one of the best parts of the game. Here are 2 I took though to demonstrate the beauty in the violence!

Assassin's creed just hasn't been the same since the Desmond storyline finished. Unity and Syndicate were ok, but not enough for me to invest further into the series.

Yo, that was a LOT of damage on that headshot right at the end there.

Also I kinda hate to be the nitpicker, but Medusa is a name, not a species - she's a Gorgon, not "a Medusa" (similarly for people talking about "Medusas" when they mean Gorgons). I don't mind the GB crew doing this but hopefully the game gets it right (they at least seemed to here).

I dont think it's too soon, but I didn't play last year's due to several issues with the game that dont appear to apply to this one, which also has added features that are enticing (RPG-ish stuff).

So, I am ready for this. I think the press should sometimes realize that just because they play everything, it doesn't mean most other gamers do. There were good reasons not buy the game last year - so some of us didn't, and I doubt, statically, most gamers did either.

If they're gonna do the two studios thing, why make (roughly) the exact same game? Let one do the Origins action combat, and have the other do something completely different. Like Assassin's Creed + Yakuza set during the Gangs of New York era.

I'm completely mystified why they're choosing to cater to people that were never into Assassins Creed in the first place, because this game might as well not even be part of the franchise anymore. AC was always very unique because of it's control scheme, combat and structure - it's what set it apart from other games, along with the future animus storyline. Now they've gone ahead and stripped everything that made that game stand apart from it's contemporaries and left in climbing, which is mostly automatic.

Cool for people that always thought this series was "shit" and now it's finally "good" for them. Sucks for the people like myself that actually liked AC the way it was and even enjoyed the animus-future story stuff because it was at least different. Origins was kind of a slog in the end, and Bayek was extremely one dimensional. Odyssey looks like more of the same and I think I'll finally take a break from the franchise.

@thomasvivaldi: I mean, this has a dialogue system, branching story, protagonist gender select, romance options, all that stuff. Like, it’s a proper, RPG-arse RPG. For me, that’s a HUGE differentiator. I was never really fussed about Origins, but I’m probably going to get this day one.

The videos have been giving me major Witcher/Mass Effect vibes, and I’m super into that.

I'm feeling like I will probably buy this game just because I'm so thirsty for an open world ARPG in an ancient Greek setting, but something about the way it looks just bums me out and I don't know why.

I really hope there's an option to remove those obnoxious damage numbers and change voiceover language, though.

So I didn't play Origins, and this seems pretty cool, so I might play it.

But at what point do these games stop being Assassin's Creed games. Are you an Assassin? Do you Assassinate? If you had asked me what parts of the Assassin brand were critical, I probably would have said sweet wrist blades and the weird future-past story line. It feels like they've completely abandoned the future stuff, and you're telling me this game doesn't have wrist blades?

Again, I'm probably going to get this and enjoy it. It looks neat. But it really doesn't look like an Assassin's Creed game.

Based on what I've played of Origins and previous games plus watching and reading the press release stuff about Odyssey, I guess I understand why took the direction they did but I still don't understand why the male main character is Razor Ramon.

@kirkyx: I'm fine with Odyssey, but let that studio iterate on where that gameplay is going for the series. Having other studios crib each others work just makes the games seem like half steps.

Assassin's Creed should open up like the Warhammer series. Make an RTS or City Builder, justified by Abstergo trying to find some first civilization ruins based off a city planner's or army movement.

Origins was exactly what the franchise needed, and this looks equally cool. Still, I hope this doesn't mean they're going to run the Origins model of AC into the ground like they did before. The one after Odyssey will need to be pretty different to hold my interest.

@hassun: Honestly, Origins' two DLCs (which I'm playing now) remind me a LOT of the Witcher 3's two DLCs so Curse of the Pharoahs is actually AC: Blood and Wine.
