These MP only events with game press that are notoriously not good at MP don't seem very flattering. I don't know who they would invite though if they want coverage aside from maybe streamers. Games press and youtubers have almost entirely diverged from MP shooters entirely.

Man, this whole franchise I'm so 'meh' on. Fine enough games but I can never imagine playing through the campaign more than once or spending hours with the multiplayer. I appreciate the series for elaborating on RE4 with making standards for third person shooting at least.

This one, uh, why is it on the 360? I'm not that bothered by graphics but you'd think a big budget game would make bigger strides, surely?

Why do people complain about shotguns in Gears? I never understood why. Though the multiplayer never really appealed to me in the first place, isn't the shotty just a close range kill? Ineffective at all but just outside of melee range? People seem like big babies about a tool they should be using themselves.

Graphically this doesn't look much better than 3 did, though it most likely looks better in person. If it comes out for PC I'll play it, but I played enough Gears over the years, and this just seems to be more of that.

Just set the FOV to 20 degrees and I'm sure you'll hit that 1080/60 target. Holy cow that's bad.

This footage definitely looks way worse than it did in person, but yeah, I was surprised it wasn't more of a leap in fidelity. Lot of tradeoffs being made to hit that res/performance target I guess.

I'm surprised by how much this game looks like Gears.

Splitting up the playerbase between who pays for maps and who doesn't is definitely worse than what Halo 5 is doing. Still cool that they're trying to do some sort of free support for the game.

What the fuck this looks exactly like gears 3, and I mean exactly to a fault. Same graphics, same weapons, same exact animations. Have they actually done almost nothing new with this game at all?

Also maaan hearing about how the story, premise, setting, basically everything with single player could have been amazing and new and different and then the devs saying they decided not to do that is still extremely disappointing.

This looks like the most Gears of War ass Gears of War I've ever seen.

Current gen Microsoft (first party) is depressing, so many cutting edge series with no creative direction.

Gears multiplayer was ruined when they decided to make the bullets come out of the barrel in Gears 2 instead of just center screen. Never liked it after that.

Gears 1 multiplayer still the best.

Watching this reminded me of all the great times I had with Gears MP. I always bought these games for the campaign and somehow fell down a hole with Horde and PVP each time.

@spacedandie: You're asking for a new IP with Gears' mechanics which won't make the money that a Gears that even if it is the same as the others will unless the new game is incredible

The game seems to be missing a lot of shadows, not sure if that's the beta or what, but damn it looks terrible graphically.

What I'm hearing is that the franchise that invented horde mode is now focusing their efforts on spectator cams and E-sports. What a disappointment. If you want your game to be a sport, build an amazing game.

Sending perhaps the worst person at action multiplayer games on staff to a multiplayer only event was a great choice.

Luckily, a lot of the games press is also just awful at games as made obvious by the constant 'I only play before release' comments expressed here and in the past.

Who even cares about this franchise anymore? And goddamn this looks as old as the tired tropes its churning out yet again!

@ericnstuff: I wouldn't say it is/was "God awful", but I do agree it was bad. I think the biggest problem was they didn't know how to balance out all the powers, armor, and weapons with the core gameplay. Every mode was super unbalanced which was a real shame coming from that developer.

I'm not sure if this is what Jeff was talking about, but the community for the game definitely took the shotgun stuff too far. Like "Get nasty messages in your inbox telling you to kill yourself if you used any of the other guns" too far.

As someone who played far, far too much Gears of War 2 multiplayer, I can confirm that being able to active reload whenever and it being on a cooldown is INSANE, and also will have a significant impact on how people who take the game seriously play.

@spacefish: This game is like the least cutting edge game possible, except maybe Counter-Strike. It's shooting mechanics that are one decade old wrapped in lore that is also one decade old. There's basically no way for them to make Gears of War cutting edge again. I have mad respect for Epic Games, they're an awesome developer that have made several of the most important shooters ever (Unreal Tournament and UT2004, Gears of War,) and they were awesome, but Gears of War needs to disappear. It's too old.

I'm sure there is plenty of new stuff in the details.

I'm usually not one to point out graphics, or complain about them, but holy shit why do the textures look SOOOOOO bad here?

Multiplayer is gonna be 60, single player is going to be 30. Obviously they are going to have to lower quality settings in multiplayer to get a better framerate on an xbone.

Too ''old''? What does that even mean? How is Gears of War's iterative gameplay any different from the progression of any other shooter? Gears gameplay works, and there's still no other cover-based shooter that can come close to matching it. The recent remastered version of the original Gears also shown that these games have come a long way since in improving and tightening up the controls throughout the franchise. Not to mention the additional mechanics they each add to the fray.

Claiming that Gears 4 has ''decade old mechanics'' is like saying Street Fighter V's mechanics are 20+ years old.
