Let me know if the audio on this is weird - I was getting some hiss from Alex while we were recording, and adjusted the volume downward about ten minutes in. Not sure if I managed to fix it, but I'll look into it for next time.

Also next time: a title! And hopefully music! We'll see! Apologies if these seem off-the-cuff, but it's been difficult to do a lot of planning with all the E3 hoopla. It was, at least, ready to publish yesterday, but I wanted to wait for the megaton announcement to wear down a bit.

I promise to have a title for this by the time we come back for the next one! Maybe!

I accidentally understood this to be the Untitled Giant Bomb Movie. I imagine if such a thing existed, it would be rated R for Strong Sexual Content and Language.

Awesome. Can't wait to hear more about how disappointing Man of Steel was (I assume that's what will be said because it's kind of true. So much potential.)

If you're just going to do a Movie thing on a Video Game website, get Ryan in on this shit and just call it the TANG podcast.

Or branch out even more and just call it Giant Bombcast: Off-Topic

Though I guess that would just be redundant.

BOOM!

Fantastic, what a nice surprise. Can't wait to see what you guys thought of This is the End.

By the way, would you be open to the idea of getting some other movie critics in to talk with you two about recent releases? I've been watching a lot of Half in the Bag recently, on Red Letter Media, and their format is the same as yours (that is, two dudes talking about movies in a really casual way). You're two guys, they're two guys, two plus two is four, and the more the merrier!

@chucknoluck: there are some pretty mild spoilers for Man of Steel in there, but nothing I would consider very major. There are superfights that occur in places that are very familiar to fans of the Superman mythology. That's about as explicit as I think I got.

@jimmy_p: Well, I definitely *thought* Frances Ha would at least be decent, and that's about as arthouse as it gets. Since we're paying for these movies out of pocket, I'd definitely hope that everything I watch is good (and we just outright skip stuff that looks terrible). Hopefully something's good soon.

Would be nice to just have like 5 minutes at the end maybe recommending a movie Rory and Alex like? Just to get through the dirge of dire blockbusters... Great podcast though, the movie industry is just not doing you justice guys :)

I have a friend who is hard of hearing and ALL the theatres in Ontario Canada we went to have the exact same closed captioning/ subtitle system.

Also listening to this podcast, I have a hard time believing you guys ever truly "like" any summer popcorn action movies. There are a lot of plot elements you sort of gloss over, which are the things that give the characters their defining attributes, and then you also assign connotations to certain scenes that I don't know are always fully warranted.

None the less, it's still entertaining to listen to, even if it does come off as a bit cranky.

@jarowdowsky: @liquidprince: I would say that we've liked a few in the past - you can of course check out the reviews on Screened from summers past. Alex had great things to say about Fast and Furious 6 last episode, and we both mostly liked Star Trek: Into Darkness aside from the ending. I wouldn't say we're being relentlessly downers on summer movies; there've just been a few stinkers lately.

Serious question, duder. What do you and Alex think about the notion that movies/film are no longer the franchise-creating juggernauts they once were?

When I think back on what became huge in the 70s - 90s, especially in regards to toys, there are tons of examples to pick from that started off as films. Star Wars is obviously the biggest one, but there were also films like ET and Ghostbusters that evolved into long-lasting franchises. (ET might not be the best example.)

I can't think of a single film in the past 13 years that has spawned that sort of legacy, with the obvious exception of anything Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks touches. Those companies, however, have a unified brand beyond their franchises, so I don't think they count.

Am I just a bitter 22-year old, or do most modern blockbusters just prey upon existing fan bases instead of trying to build their own?

I watched the red letter media review of Man of Steel today, which made me realize I didn't really like Man of Steel that much. I knew I hadn't when I walked out and the review put words for why that I couldn't voice. Sounds like Matt agrees; however, I didn't think Henry Cavill was great, but I also don't think that was his fault.

@rorie: Let's be serious though Rorie... Fast and the Furious doesn't count when it comes to Alex. His love for that series is beyond logic.

Also, have guys read about Cavill's workout for this movie? It was ridiculous. He had a 5000 calorie a day diet, which when you are only eating lean meats and vegetables, is a ton of food... Plus his workout was ridiculous. It's kinda sad when people see someone big and automatically assume it has to be steroids, belittling the ridiculous amount of work he did to become Superman.

yeah, the start of the film is Jeff leaving Gamespot and then running though Petaluma, on his way back home to create Giant Bomb. It will be like at the start of The Social Network. I also imagine the whole 193 minute film to be scored by Explosions in the Sky,

Smallville(the series) was full of religious/prophetic undertones, made it a little hard to watch at times.
