Why isn't Jess listed under cast? Surely we can withstand another name starting with J.

Hot take: Fight Club is still a fairly good movie, not a masterpiece or anything, but it's pretty great. A lot of Fight Club fans are absolutely terrible though, and a lot seems to forget that even Tyler Durden is a fantasy created by the narrator, he's basically a fantasy of counter-culture, not what actual counter-culture should be. The twist of multiple personality disorder is generally lame, but it works in the context of that movie because of that.

Here's the deal: only a few nu-metal bands back then were actual good, and if they were, they were way ahead of there time (ala Linkin Park, Korn, SoaD, etc.). New rock and experimental bands now are going back to that sound, directing it, and utilizing the best attributes with other ingredients to really push that sound ahead to something very rad. Check Code Orange and Poppy for good examples.

Glad people are coming around on KoRn. Sure there is some crazy stuff there but they evolved their sound constantly through the years.

Okay, here is the breakdown.. Nu Metal was never a bad music genre as a whole. You may have some bands that sucked, but you can say the same thing for any genre of music. What happened for those too young to understand, rap music was experiencing a golden age during the late 80s and through the 90s. So much so that it eventually would take over as the most popular form of music people listened to. As a result, other music genre had to do something to stay relevant. Rock did this by creating the Nu Metal sub-genre. And as expected, it became huge. Limp Bizkit was one of the leading bands of the genre, which is why it got the most hate. Because by this time, a douche-bag, bigoted, movement called Rockism got started, which rebelled against any Pop or Rap related and burned rock groups using these genres at the stake. The backlash caused many bands to abandoned their sound out of fear of losing fans. Examples include: Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Project 86, Incubus, to name a few. However, you also had groups like 311, Deftones, Korn, and Limp Bizkit who didn't abandoned their Nu Metal roots and this is why those bands are respected today. There is also the fact that Eminem came a long soon afterwards, and suddenly many of those Rockism bigots didn't hate Rap anymore. I wonder why.

@fear_the_booboo: Here is another hot take: a lot of movies that people proclaim to be terrible are actually pretty decent, it’s just the internet happened at some point.

Dude Prodeus is DOOM 64 with fancy effects. I would argue DOOM 64 still has better music and level design.

I don't know what's wrong with me in my 33s but I just watched Fight Club with my wife two weeks ago and I was so damn bored for most of it. I said the first hour and the last 30 minutes were ok and I loved this movie 15 years ago. I also just watched the new Dune and Halloween movies(2018 and 2021) and fell asleep halfway through those. I would honestly say Fight Club is better than Halloween and Dune at this point.

@domostrife: Totally. Revolver is as good as it gets and is such an important record for so many reasons; The Beatles are so much more than their ‘top five most listened to songs on Spotify’. Comparing them to boybands is also such a boring take and really highlights how little people know of the early part of their career. Read ‘Tune In’ by Mark Lewisohn; an excellent book.

The first game i can think of with that shiny pixelated style isn't actually that old, it's the System Shock remake that's still in development, though i'm sure there's an indie game somewhere that's done it before.

I loved Return to Oz as a kid as well. As someone who also watched The Wizard of Oz a lot, it was really dark and upsetting to be taken back to that world and have it all decaying and in chaos. Also very weird to learn later that it was directed by Walter Murch, who worked primarily as an editor and sound editor on things like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

This right here. I actually think Fight Club is a great movie, but shitheads that take the wrong lesson from it (namely what you said about Tyler Durden here) cause people to drop their cold takes on Twitter about liking the movie being a "red flag."
