I'm kind of excited to see Vinny play some Super Castlevania IV.

Although, I do wonder if he'll play some Boku Dracula-kun first. After all, it did come out in-between Castlevania III and Castlevania IV, and it was a home console release.

@steevl: Dracula's Curse is probably the hardest of the old school Castlevania games. I think it has to do with the fact that you have a buddy system, and the designers didn't really account for all the ways each buddy's special powers could break the level design or certain enemies, which leads to parts of the game being far more frustrating than others due to a sub optimal route. You know, because certain levels were designed with this or that character in mind. The clock tower before Dracula is probably the most egregious example, as using Sypha, Trevor, or Grant could make it a real challenge thanks to the bat placements, but with Alucard you just... well, fly over the level like Super Mario World.

And that lack of a checkpoint at Dracula is utter fucking bullshit. I'm very glad that hasn't stuck around throughout the rest of the series.

Yeah, I played through the game as a teen three times with all the characters, and there are definitely some areas that are rougher than others. I never did clear the game with just Trevor, though. I made it to the doppelganger boss and just couldn't get past him for some reason. Vinny really lucked out with only having to fight it twice, as I felt it was the most difficult boss in the game for me back then.

I recently played through the game again a few weeks ago and was surprised at how easily I made it to the end. I guess the old muscle memory stuck with me or something. I still had a lot of trouble with the last two stages, of course. I was following Vinny's exact route, using Sypha.

There's also the fact that the US release of this game is more difficult than the Japanese version. There were no bats in that pendulum room before Dracula, and the game actually have you a checkpoint when you cleared that room.

Awesome, congrats Vinny! Also, there have been quite a few "Velnumdes" people in the later games, though they're usually called Belnades or alternatively (in the terrible N64 games) Fernandez.

I could have done without the spoiler in the description text, but I'm looking forward to watching this.

Edit: I love how good Vinny is at kiting skeletons in that post-checkpoint section.

Bummer to hear they're not planning to do this for awhile. For whatever reason this is my favorite Giant Bomb joint right now.

Grats Vinny! I really love CV3 but man is it a goddamn hard game. While 4 doesn't hold quite the same place in my heart as 3, I'm really, really looking forward to VinnyVania of Super Castlevania IV.

Damn, this game is really hammering away with that L D! Vinny has become a true vampire hunter, though, and I'd like to see the Castlevania that can slow him down now!

Also, I want a Kerbal series sobad.

It's weird to me that some people are complaining about this game. Yeah some of the levels are hard BS. But this is one of the best Castlevania games ever.

In that case, what a dumb fucking series.

What do you mean?

Oh I just realized that you have no actual opinions and just wanted to hate something that is popular here. Nevermind.

Ignoring the people who don't matter- good job Vinny. This series was fun to watch, that 9th level was totally bullcrap.

@shaunk: I mean that if this pile of bullshit is one of the best of its kind, then its kind is shit. I don't care how rose colored your glasses are, if you see this and think that it's good, your opinions are bad.

Wow, the level of toxicity is insane. It's not rose colored glasses. I just played through it for a first complete playthrough this summer. I would like to know why you think this is even a remotely bad game. But you clearly are just looking to be a dick in the comments. Even Vinny said it's been his favorite so far. It's an amazing game.

@shaunk: So calling out a bad game is being toxic and a dick now? Ok. And Vinny ranking it as the best of three bad games is a seal of quality? Gotcha.

I enjoyed watching this, the same way I enjoyed Alex play Big Rigs. Watching someone suffer through a bad game is fun.

Wow, the toxicity and salt combination is immense.

So wait, the english instruction manual refers to Sypha as a guy when clearly the game refers to her and depicts her as female in the ending. Were they trying to go for a Metroid style twist or was this just another cause of an old game with localized nonsense in the manual?

As someone who played through every single Castlevania (except the 2 on N64 because they were impossible for me to get) just a few years ago, Castlevania III is far and away the hardest of the entire series. Number 2 is probably the original, and Rondo is probably number 3 (well....besides that Dracula fight in Dracula X maybe.....), but Rondo doesn't feel nearly as cheap, which is probably why it's my favorite of the series. After Rondo/Dracula X the difficulty takes a nosedive, and the rest of the series is mostly pretty easy, with only a couple of real tricky spots (Circle of the Moon probably the hardest of the post SotN games).

@oldirtybearon: It's even more bullshit because that was a change to the US version. The Famicom version has a checkpoint at Dracula that Konami America decided to take out because they are evil. It broke me, I wasn't willing to spend the three hours like Vinny did, so I quit playing off of the Wii VC and loaded it in an emulator, used my password to make it to the last level, and then used a Save State right before the Drac fight. I wouldn't have had I not know about the way it is in the Japanese version, but I did, so I felt justified.

@steevl: After playing through III, IV felt SO EASY. I barely even remember it because it just flew by.

It's funny that Japanese games got the reputation for being "too h4rdc0re for 'MURICANS" on the back of something like 2 games, when it works the other way around far, far more often.

It's also utterly awful how often the killing strat wasn't 'git gud,' but 'stand in this spot and spam. Seems badly designed rather than a 'hidden weakness.'
