Kart without the Mario
As good of a kart-racer Sonic and Sega All-Stars is, there really is not all that much to say. The controls are solid and responsive, while still feeling arcadey and fun, and the characters feel a little more organic appearing together than in past Sega party games, but for a $50 price tag the game just does not feel like enough.
Sega All-Stars racing is definitely one of the better racers out there; a fully featured single player mode, great split-screen and online multiplayer, and missions to keep everything fresh and challenging, but there is nothing to separate it from the rest of the better family racing games.
Mario Kart certainly has its share of the market, and Sony's Modnation racers is one of the year's most anticipated releases this summer. Sega All-Stars would have been absolutely perfect as a budget title, or even a downloadable, but with an almost full asking price in a field full of competitors, it really seems to fit in with those Sega fan-boys the 1990's left behind.
