I'm not a girl but even i'm offended by the clothes their putting the female characters in. Have fighting games sunk so low that all the females in the game are just eye candie for teenage boys to look at. i mean, all the males get cool clothes and armor ,and i watched a traliar where one of the girls had a tatered japanese school girls outfit on, come on! the guys at least look like they fight but the girls get dress in the most revlealing unarmored fetish crap. it's frankly discusting.
Soulcalibur IV
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jul 29, 2008

Soul Calibur and women?
Jeff was going on about the same subject during one of the E3 bombcasts, and while I wish he would have just talked more about the gameplay, he has a point. A porn star being brought on to the Saints Row 2 development team is just the latest in a series of stupid decisions that degrade our hobby, and I really do wish this crap would stop. If it really bothers you though, you should be comforted by a few facts about SC IV.
1) While several female characters may have " giant bombs* " about half the female cast actually has a fairly reasonable chest size. There's some pictures floating around the internet with all of the characters stripped of their clothing--meaning in their underwear--and there are several B and C cups in there for variety. Compare that to DOA, where each and every female fighter looks like she's trying to smuggle bolling balls under her shirt.
2) You can change the clothing on the main characters, to keep Ivy and several others from looking like total whores.
3) You can create your own female fighters, and choose to give them all flat chests and pants suits.
I'm just not looking forward to playing online with a bunch of teenagers wanting to act out bra and panty fights, while they play the game with one hand. Eww. I hope people will be a little better than that, but if not, there's always single player and matches with people on my friends list.
*I'm sorry I went there, I really am.

Shameful, just plain shameful
On one hand, I agree that such revealing outfits could be seen as degrading and make our hobby as a whole look bad (not to mention immature). It would be nice to see game design grow up a bit and branch out into more truly artistic designs that could still be plenty sexy, but not quite as ridiculous as much of what's seen today.
On the other hand, the original poster seemed to say that he thought males got the cooler outfits while the females all looked like tramps (forgive a little paraphrasing here). I disgree. I've always thought that females tend to get the cooler outfits in games and I definitely think this is true in SC. True, you do have to look past some overly revealing stuff (like Ivy's 1P outfit) to get to the better ones (like Ivy's 2P outfit or some of her other alts from past games). I love Tira's costume (a little more cloth certainly wouldn't hurt, but she still has one of my favorite outfits) as well as Talim's, Hilde's, Xianhua's, and others.
Also, I think it's important to keep games in context with other forms of media. I don't really think games are tremendously worse about this kind of thing than other comparable forms of media. I've seen music videos on MTV that put just about anything I've seen in a video game to shame in terms of how degrading they are to women. At least in games the women can usually kick your ass as well as look pretty, which puts them above some other types of media.
Games on the whole are fairly comparable to Hollywood action movies and one quick glance at those will tell you for sure that games aren't alone in oversexualizing women. There's another thing in common here too: both involve action. Both games and movies show humans in their respective story worlds that have to be at the top of their game, in peak shape, to fight off hordes of enemies and evil and such. As such, it's not overly surprising that women (and men as well) are depicted as the peak of the human form: strong, fast, sexy, etc. Art has done the same thing for years as well. Venus and David are the human form at its pinnacle.
Anyway, I'm getting a little too deep into this, but suffice it to say, I agree that there is a problem, but I don't think it's as bad as many people think and we're certainly not alone as a media in doing it and there's often a reason why it's done (would an unattractive or unfit character look right fighting evil or performing cool flips or sword swipes or what have you?).
Plus, you know, women are pretty. Why complain too much? :)

I dont find it bad that girls in the game are less dressed lol, it doesnt 'Arouse' me or anything just its funny to see and adds some realism with some kinda girl sense to it.
"DirrtyNinja said: "Complaining about scantly dressed video game chicks. Grow some balls mate"
hey, ya know... fuck you guy. if your going to be a jackass about it then don't post here.i'm not complaining that the women are to pretty, thats not my problem. My problem is that they could make them look just as good looking and still look logical. instead of taking the lazy way out and just sticking them in boder line soft core porn ware. and i mean this to all forms of media.
"
So how about you grow up.
Yeah but your arguement is flawed... you complain about how the game is unrealistic and immature to have skimppy outfits, yet you dont think its too unrealistic that the girls are pretty. If this were a real thing going on, the girls fighting in it would have better armour, for sure... no doubt about it. But they would also be named Helga and would most likely be ugly he-shes from foreign countries.
So dude if your gonna complain about one, you have to be complaining about the other as well. Otherwise you are not making sense. Also, you said to one of the previous posters to essentailly stop being a jackass. DUDE ! its the internet ! EVERYONE is a JACKASS !
"What the hell is the porn star doing in the development of SR2?Alot of people who play video games watch porn..it's a fact.Tera Patrick is one of the more well known Pornstars. The developers are using her to raise interest for the game. You have to remember that's Saint's Row is basically a rip-off of GTA...they need some type of gimmick or something to compete.
"
Yeah, and not counting getting Tera in Saint's Row development, this is after all a Japanese made game, and from all the DoA's(of course cuz of itagaki, but its pretty clear that) the Japanese love their women with big tits,I mean just look at almost any anime, its just the way they are. I do completely agree with metal though as well, videos games are another form of entertainment just like movies, and putting "hot chicks" with big tits,in revealing outfits is just kind of expected at this point in both forms of entertainment.
I only noticed this game was coming out on the 29th a few days ago, and I was very excited, but then I saw how some of the female characters were dressed, or rather, undressed, and it's really making me rethink getting it. How can I take the game seriously with this garbage in it? Also, online mode will probably be full of kids giggling at their undressed characters...
"Relax. Fighting games have always been centered around big tits. Nothing has changed.Well that's not really true. I wouldn't say Street Fighter was centered around breasts, nor Mortal Kombat.
"
And those are the two most famous series, it's these other one's like Dead or Alive that are doing it
The reason they're doing that is because they have to draw a crowd somehow. After the unbalanced tragedy that was SC3, most of the hardcore fighting game enthusiasts lost interest in the series. So they use gimmick Star Wars characters to draw people in (it worked on me). They did that in SC 2 also, but that game didn't really need them because that game was good. Now they're saying, "Hey, like Star Wars? Then buy our game. Don't like Star Wars? You like boobs right?" If you want realistically dressed women in fighting games, try Tekken.
To the OP---- There was a big fuss about this a while back... and while I understand your views, I don't really agree with them. It's very easy to get caught up in the anti-sexist thing, and swing so far over you forget other points.
Yes... the women are unrealistically built (for the most part)... but the least dressed one, Ivy, actually has a fairly thick body. Not overweight of course, but isn't your classic "stick with breasts" from videogames. And now, let's look at the men... I'm a straight dude. Most of you are too. So, maybe we are not really checking out so and so's abs and arms that could send our heart a flutter.... but if you take a look--- the men are just as bad. Lot's of shirtless dudes, all strong and chiseled. It's a two way street.
Furthermore, when a man or woman is in a videogame, comic book, or other similar forms... it is important to really show off gender specific features. It's very easy to make an andrognyous character... hell, look at Lost Odyssey. The shoulders, chest, and stance were the only thing keeping Kaim looking like a man.
When a woman is wearing clothes like this, and has say... "Itagaki's dream figure"... I don't feel that it's anything sexist or disgusting as long as men are in the same boat. And really... in this game they are. I'm not saying this just because, but because I live with one of the biggist Soul Calibur fans I met. Who is actually a girl.
agreed. i think it's sad tho that namco felt they needed this hook to be successful, but it doesn't annoy me. it makes me laugh thinking, "there's no way she could fight in that getup without a wardrobe malfunction.
and thirteen year olds everywhere can make goofy characters to their hearts content, use them poorly online and help the rest of us run up our ranks. i'm failing to see a downside here...well aside from the creepy factor. but that's really a transitory thing, and it passes.
now i don't even look at the characters i fight online. i just check their stance to determine who i'm "really" up against...and summarily go to work on them.
ivy is the only one that looks whore-ish to me. Taki got her boobs debuffed cuz in other games her nipple stuck out a lot more (i mean damn!). Other wise the other girls are what I would expect a girl to wear in a video game ( unfortunantlynot very much).
"....................i know.....
"
they should be in the kitchen making me a sandwich
the fuck are they fighting for?
I have played Soul Calibur in the past, but after seeing the first screens for Ivy on this one, I decided that I've had enough. I don't care what costume options are available, this is the way they're trying to sell the game with ridiculously sized breasts, Star Wars, and random cheap stuff that says, "Hey! I'm looking for general appeal into the geek world! Buy me!"
That's just not my cup of tea. I'm not protesting the game or anything, I simply won't buy it.
"lol, are you serious? look at a billboard, look in a magazine, watch mtv for about 2 minutes and i'm sure you'll see more revealing/perverse clothing than soul calibur.I don't know about anyone else who doesn't like what's been done to the game, but the hell would I want to do any of those things for if I don't like what's portrayed? Just because one person or company does it doesn't mean another should.

I agree. The developers use it to get more attention but its one of the primary things that turns me off from a videogame. It makes me question the reasoning behind them putting the characters in, as if its a distraction from a greater problem in the game.
I have to agree. Sometimes I feel by putting hot girls inside a game actually turns us away from the experience. It's more of a distraction per se. Plus it's not just fighters. It's all around. If anyone can list a group of characters who do not dress up in slim clothing and is not a cartoon-like character, let me know.
I'm totally with you, JackiJinx. I'm not buying the game either because of Ivy and Taki, which is a shame because I loved Soul Calibur 2 (3 not so much), and from what I can tell my favorite character, Talim, wasn't really messed with. But Ivy and Taki are just absurd!
So I'm not buying it... I just won't support it--there are better games I can spend my hard-earned money on that don't stoop to such levels. For those of you who can get past it or enjoy that sort of thing: good for you, enjoy.
