I was just reading up on some fiction of Starcraft and noticed that  there are an awful lot of parallels? Are the both universes related in any way?
    Terran - UNSC
    Protoss -  Covenant
    Zerg - Flood
    Xel'Naga - Forerunners
    Overmind -  Gravemind

Are they both based of the same subject matter? How do they both get away with such similarities without one suing the other?

Personally, I think both universes are shallow and shouldn't be any kind of example for 'good' universes etc.

The Flood, along with many other element from Halo (and Starcraft, Half-Life, etc)
    are all inspired from Alien.

There have been signs that point to the Forerunners being the same as the race(I forget their name) that also mysteriously vanished in the Marathon games.
This, along with dozens of other references (Mjolnir Mark IV armor in the Marathon games for example) would suggest that they do in fact have some ties.

@R3Qui4M: cause neither one of them had an actual original thought. The same overall story has been around since battlestar gallatica or even Dr Who, which begat etc................

Next thing you know somebody will make the exact same thread but say Mass effect instead. Seriously giant Space Opera is the story, and solid gameplay is why people stick with it.

Thing that people are forgetting here that may lend some credence to this is that Halo was going to be an RTS

These kinds of parallels exist across countless sci-fi universes, it's interesting the number of links you can make over all the sci-fi fiction out there.

Halo and Marathon are separate universes; the visual similarities are just callbacks. They do share some things however, such as the idea of AI Rampancy, which works much the same in both franchises.

There was a theory floating around that the object in the legendary ending of Halo 3 was the UESC Marathon, but I'm pretty sure that was officially debunked :(

I think it went something along the lines of Aliens > Warhammer > StarCraft > Halo in terms of chronological timeline. Either way, there's bound to be similarities in genres.

its just like a fantasy setting with humans, elves, dwarves, ogre/orc that every  fantasy game utilizes..., the basics can be similar but the stories can be different.

I agree it's noticeable.  I thought the same as the sp was intro'd.  The 3 races, the Zerg mind thing and Gravemind. Also, Kerrigan and Cortana ;).  Anyway no big, and it's so funny how easily people get irritable about this kind of simple observation.

Read the novel Starship Troopers. Then you will see were all these games got their ideas from.

I think the similarities end with, its space yo, there are animal like alien dudes and civilized alien dudes along with us humans in space. Also, there is no such thing as pure originality. Everything is pulled form everything else, and is then altered in a personal, unique, and creative way. Ideas stem off of each other, and unless someone comes out and says they are ripping off something, or it is extremely obvious, cough Darksiders cough, then its not really a bad thing.
