A digital distribution service owned by Valve Corporation. Originally created to distribute Valve's own games, Steam has since become the de facto standard for digital distribution of PC games.
This may be a stupid question, I honestly have no idea what fragmentation is, as it pertains to steam. Anyone care to explain it to me? My TF2 catche is at 2% is that good or bad, I have no idea.
Fragmentation is when files are stored inefficiently on your hard drive, defragmentation, moves your files around so they fit more tightly together, making programs run slightly better and making them take up less space. With larger programs like downloaded games from steam, fragmentation occurs more. Or at least thats what i've always been told.
Using your computer can cause data to be accidentally placed (In a physical sense) in an inefficient manner on the hard drive. Defragmenting sorts all that out and makes sure your hard disk is optimized and in tip top condition. A fragmented hard drive often runs slower, which is bad news for games in particular.
I think a standard windows defragmentation also works on the steam files. I suppose that option is there for those who don't want to bother de-fragmenting their entire disk.
