IGN received a report this evening that The Last Guardian has been officially cancelled, that was apparently disclosed in Sony's internal meeting last week.

It's still a rumor, though. Not confirmed until, well, it's confirmed.

Source. Heh, now things are getting interesting. If this rumor doesn't pan out, IGN won't be looking too good when it comes to future reports like this, seeing how this might be getting one of the biggest in terms of traction.

Last night, I made a call to post a story about the cancellation of The Last Guardian. The source for this information was, in my opinion as IGN’s Editor in Chief, credible enough to justify running the story. While there is still a discrepancy with what our source has said, Scott Rohde’s Twitter post makes it clear that our original source was in error. The business of handling news sources involves some assumption of risk and last night my evaluation of that risk was clearly in error.

I want to say I'm surprised, but I think everyone knew this was coming.

Still, I'm sad about this, I fucking LOVED Shadow of the Colossus, and I was really looking forward to their new game.

If this is news, it kind of isn't news.

Do they usually announce cancellations at pre-E3 meetings? Does the proximity to E3 even matter or is it just a coincidence?

What is going on with this game? Have they been working on it these past five years? Did they cancel it three years and forget to tell anyone? How much money has been spent on this damn thing?

Overreacting much? Games get cancelled all the time and TLG have been under development for such a long time that something has to be really wrong with that game. In my opinion they probably did the right thing: games that have been delayed for as long a time as TLG rarely turn out good. And to the people that say that it's not fair that Duke Nukem got released when this doesn't... well just look how well Duke Nukem turned out.

Regarding Naughty Dog. Sure it sucks that so many people have left, but luckily ND still have a lot of talent left: Especially Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, who were heavily involved with Uncharted 2 btw which is still the best Uncharted game. So I wouldn't worry too much.

One cancelled game and some people leaving a developer does not equal a crisis.

Canceled or not, this was and is nothing more than a name and a bit of fluff CGI to me. Show me gameplay and it might get my interest. Otherwise, I don't particularly care one way or the other.

Well I guess it's just IGN being idiots again. Jesus Christ that site is a fucking mess.

It's kinda weird how anyone was ever super excited. ICO and Colossus are two wonderful games, but they never really showed us what this game was. The only footage has the boy running about with pots and the monkeydogcatbird jumping on a bridge.

I'd love for this to be a rumour because I'd like to think that team could put out another incredible game. If it's still alive they really need to show us what it actually is... hopefully in a couple of days.

But for me, it's pretty hard to get worked up over a non-game like Last Guardian. People say Gone Home isn't a game. I say Last Guardian isn't a game. My reasoning? IT ISN'T A GAME!
