Just picked this up. Been thinking about this game for a while.
The Witcher
Game » consists of 8 releases. Released Oct 26, 2007
The Witcher is an Action Role Playing Game developed by CD Projekt RED and is based on the book "The Last Wish" by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. An Enhanced Edition was released in September, 2008. A director's cut version was released for North America on July 31, 2009.
5 bucks for enhanced edition on steam!
" Five bucks for any game is worth it. In my opinion of course. Only mine though. "You heard it hear first, folks. Snapstacle would pay $5 for Bebe's Kids.
Played about an hour of it.
Meh. Combat seems kinda dull. Click... click... click, and the story is looking really cliche - Who didn't see that death coming? - and for some reason there are some pretty bad framerate issues, despite this being FAR from the best looking game I've run on this PC (Metro 2033 runs beautifully)
I'll put an hour or two into it tomorrow and see how I feel.
Must be a problem with the Steam version, I never had any real frame rate problems with my retail version.
Anyway, one of my favorite RPG's in a very long time, 5 bucks for this game is a bargain.
I borrowed it from a friend a few weeks back after it didn't turn up on the Black Friday sales. Been waiting for it for a while, and really loved it. Definitely worth such a low price and picked up a copy for myself, just so I can play through those modules.
I played this awhile back and I don't really know what to tell you. I'd imagine this game was a masterpiece when it came out, if you were a native Polish speaker. As of now, some of the English voice acting and animations in the game are probably going to be a bit jarring. There are mods that can fix the combat imbalances.
All that said, this game is easily worth 5$.
" I'm above the minimum specs, but i'm getting some absolutely TERRIBLE framerate issues. It render's it unplayable. My video card's way out of date, so is that the problem...? "I'm waaay above the min specs and I'm getting the same problems.
I really wanted to pick it up yesterday since I've heard great things about it (and what I've heard of The Witcher 2 sounds FUCKING AMAZING), but couldn't because someone fucked with my password and it took support too long to respond. :/
Is it still worth it, even at $40?
Hope the next batch of daily deals are better. The past couple of days have been fairly disappointing imo.
@Three0neFive: You can get the retail version for ~$25 on amazon. Fantastic game once they fixed it.
Anyone else really dislike the ponytail they've given Geralt in Witcher 2?

" Damn it. I can't believe I missed this. Would love to play Witcher. "Try GamersGate if you don't mind not having it on Steam.

The Witcher doesn't make a great first impression at all, but it's well worth sticking with.

Don't give up on it. Combat gets deeper when you have to choose the correct styles to be the most efficient, as well as swords. And story is far from cliche. You could say it has a slow start (Not something that bothers me, but many people pointed it out, as well as the combat), but once you get to chapter III, it really picks up and you won't regret it." Uh... He must've confused it with The Witcher 2. The Witcher is like 16 Euros on Steam." @Three0neFive said:

FUCK YES!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Probably already noted somewhere around here, but it's back at $5 today. I resisted last time but I think I'll try it out in case it disappears for a while again. If it's horrible then I'll just use the "it was only $5" excuse.
I forget the name, but there is a mod that completely rebalances the game to make it much more enjoyable. You will find out it is pretty easy without it.
Can't say for sure, but the game is known to become slow (insane loading times mostly) when you have too many saves. I quick saved A LOT and they didn't overwrite each other so in the end I had to delete around 580 saves or so, and that fixed the abnormal loading times. I'm not sure about FPS, though. Did you try lowering the settings a bit? My FPS usually only dropped when I was walking around large amounts of fire..." Kinda off topic, but my Laptop (yes I know... Laptop) is pretty over specced for this game, but it still never runs consistently smooth for me, regardless of settings, I get anywhere from 8-45 FPS at completely irregular intervals. Anybody have any helpful insights? "
Witcher's ace, I gifted it to my cousin because everyone needs to play this masterpiece!
Its up on Steam again for cheap, gogo!
Been wantin' to play Witcher, and now for $5?? Wooot!
Q: Why do games DL so slowly from Steam...it says 512kb/sec, and the DL will take 7+hrs...wtf? My IP DL speed is about 5 megs btw.
I don't remember Torchlight taking very long, or that free Alien Swarm game..maybe I'm forgetting, it's been a while. All my other pc games are retail discs so...
L4D2 took 2 days for me, CS:S wouldn't even begin and Torchlight was 5 minutes.
Steam's messed up is all.
" I don't remember Torchlight taking very long, or that free Alien Swarm game..maybe I'm forgetting, it's been a while. All my other pc games are retail discs so... "Thats because those games are a fraction of the size compared to the Witcher .
Also highly recommend this game to everyone!

Yeah, I knew it was bigger, I just don't get the slooww DL speed. It reserves 15 gb btw...seems like a lot. It is starting to speed up a little, 6-700+kbps is all though. Just weird to me...maybe cuz they're so busy at their end...hhmmm...no big, but still, I can't wait to check Witcher out :).

I completely wiped my Laptop last night and am in the process of reinstalling my games, hopefully it will make a difference. I doubt it though.
"@pweidman: Torchlight is like 500 MB. Alien Swarm is 2-3 GB. The Witcher is 20 GB. Also, Steam servers are probably very busy due to all the sales and traffic is probably through the roof with everyone downloading their purchases... Steam should offer P2P. "
Did you even read my post above yours?...basically said the same, except the P2P. And spec on steam said 15gb hd space reserved fyi. Anyway it's at 60% at this time.....yahoo.
" @Snapstacle: Are you serious? Because that picture seems like sarcasm. Edit: Your story checks out. Which raises the question... Why the hell is Valve not using it? "They are using it. Valve both owns and rents out server farms all across the globe. When you start a download, it downloads from your nearest locations. It just gets overloaed when more users are downloading at once. They can't make you download data that's in use or else you'd be corrupting data all the time.
