Taff yeah!! This is taffing great news! ......Taffer!
Thief
The Thief franchise consists of a series of first-person "sneaker" games, where you play as a master thief named Garrett, in a large sprawling steampunk-medieval metropolis simply known as "the City."
Thief is Coming Back on Next-Gen Consoles (and PC)
It doesn't look very dark.... They better retain the painterly photoshopped Cutscenes.... and I vaguely recall that Steven Russell is reprising Garret's role??
As Thief is my favourite ever game series I'm hanging for this... hopefully it is more than just a DXHR reskin (which would still be a good game). I want something spectacular, not good.
Mr Patrick Klepek, you sir, are a console fan boy!!! If nextgen consoles are just pc inside, then why is PC mention last???
If I sighed any harder at your post, my lungs would collapse and I would die.
So I'm all positive about the game, then I see this over at Gamespot:
"...the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague..."
Okay, okay, let's hope they're not stealing (thieving?) too much from Dishonored. But this sort of thing starts to make me worry.
It's not exactly an original concept and Dishonored doesn't own it. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's a zombie-like plague mentioned in Thief 1, and you even go into a part of town that was closed off and quarantined because of it.
Sound familiar?
Yes, but Thief came out fifteen years ago, and Dishonored just a few months ago. And the first Thief game didn't focus its entire story on it.Mostly my comment is connected to my previous one, in which I hoped they'd take and refine the best parts of Dishonored. I'm not saying Dishonored owns the concept. I just don't want the games to be too similar, since they'll be out within a few years of each other. It's not about stealing quite so much as it is about similarity. At some level all games steal from each other in this way. I don't particularly care so long as it doesn't cross this line where it feels like basically the same game, even down to the level of story.
It's not about the origin of the idea. It's just that I just played a game where I was sneaking around killing dudes, and there's a zombie plague. I'd rather not play that game again so soon. Like I said--it makes me worry, just a little bit.

Stealth? More like Suckealth, amirite or amirite?
I heard it on the Bombcast that "nobody likes stealth games." So yes, you are absolutely right, young man.
Already during the Hotspot days, Jeff said that stealth was done for. Here is a transcript: "Stealth is done, man. Uhhh. Hiding? Whatever. (...) Vision cones? Like, what is this, like the 70's man? C'mon. Cracking dudes in the face with blunt objects and shooting them in the back of the head, that's where the action is. Not hiding and dragging bodies."
Wait, why do I know that?
I bought the Thief collection on sale the other week for, like, $5. This may be the push I need to start playing them. Hopefully they still hold up.
Also, kind of funny to see Patrick "Stealth is BROKEN" Klepek having interest in this game, and even considering playing the old ones (DS anyway).
Call me a cynical piece of shit,
You are a cynical piece of shit.
Now call me a handsome son of a bitch.
Yes, I am excited for the guys who made a successful modern iteration of Deus Ex making a successful modern iteration of Thief.
Call me a cynical piece of shit,
You are a cynical piece of shit.
Now call me a handsome son of a bitch.
No.
That aside, I'm all the way excited to see what this game is like. Hopefully they blow down the doors at E3.

You are easy to handle and your mother was a dog.
I had to google some etymology, don't ever say I don't put in the effort!
Far and away the best stealth series ever and by no means as antiquated as all the people who wank off to Mark of the Ninja's or Dishonored's stealth "innovations" seem to believe. And yes, you should play DS if only for the incredible Shalebridge Cradle which is about as tense as Amnesia.
Okay, PR department, get in here: Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction. I want the entirety of our campaign promoting this game to be based on that song.
So given Patrick's vocal dislike for older stealth games...which ones has he actually played?
None. Remember no one liked them.
This is making a lot of people happy.
I should go play some Thief games, one of those series everyone talked about and I never got around to it.
God I want this to be good. I really do.
But the things I liked about the first two Thief games don't and probably never will have a wide spread appeal. Not something what will likely be an early next gen release focus. Deadly Shadows wasn't a bad game, but there was so many small things about it which I'm sure most fans would agree was the weakest game of the series. A hub-world that detracted from the immersion, no sense of risk/reward for rationing out consumable equipment (since by the 2nd level you have more equipment than you could ever imagine using), a heavy prod towards being a murderer (I still don't get why he'd need a dagger and a blackjack..). And none of those awesome cut scenes!
I don't mean to rant on about a game that game out years ago, but I'd say fans of the original two ought to be lowering their expectations. Especially if they don't get Steven Russell and Eric Brosius back on board.

Why reboot? Just make it THI4F!
I dont want a fucking reboot! Get the old voice actor back & give it as epic soundtrack as the previous games had!
Wait, it's a reboot? This kind of sucks. I enjoyed the Thief fiction and the ending of Deadly Shadows created a very interesting setup for a sequel. Especially since all three games focused on one faction and the fourth one created an ideal situation for a game centered solely on Garrett himself.
Were any of the Thief games ever on a console? Shouldn't "consoles" and "PC" be reversed in the title? #nitpicking2013
Thief 3 was on Xbox, but that's it. Everything else in the trilogy was PC exclusive.
@damisterchief: That's because Dishonored is a spiritual successor to the Original Thief games and was mad by some of the same people.
Really, really can't wait for this. While Human Revolution had its problems, I thought overall it was a great experience. I'm sure Montreal are going to give Thief the reboot it so sorely deserves.
Thief is a series I've always wanted to play, but never have managed. Huge fan of the original Deus Ex [played it many years after its release, however], I'm currently playing through DE:HR and mostly liking it, I have loved every Metal Gear Solid game, enjoyed most of the Splinter Cell games (though Conviction was hit and miss with me), and Dishonored is one of my favorite games in recent memory. I'm quite looking forward to this game, and if I can find the time, wouldn't say no to playing through the first three in preparation....hmm, now where to buy them...
@matoyak: GOG.com (easier to mod) and this patch for Thief 1 and this patch for Thief 2.
Thief 3 either gog.com or Steam and play vanilla.
I'd feel better if it was an Eidos/Irrational joint project, but even so I'm feeling pretty confident this'll be fantastic.
I miss Looking Glass.
Speaking of, you guys really should listen to the dev interviews. They contain a ton of intimate analysis of Thief: TDP.

I listened to those a while back. They're pretty awesome.
For the love of God Patrick, don't play Deadly Shadows. Play Thief 1 and 2 first. They're masterpieces, and they have their share of horror elements too.

Not to mention the the game has been in production for about 5 years. The plot and vo were probably laid down years ago.
This isn't exactly new news. Didn't they confirm they're working on a new Thief for next gen last year? I remember reading about it a while ago. I'm pretty excited, I haven't played any of them but I know it's a game I'll love. I do own them all on Steam but haven't come around to play them yet. Will definitely play them all before this one comes out though.
