As of right now (midnight on the east coast on September 30, 2009) Uncharted 2 has a metacritic score of 98!   To put that in perspective the only other games that have ever scored that high are: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, SoulCaliber, and Grand Theft Auto IV.  

And that is it!

The score is based on 20 reviews so it could still move down a little.

I don't know I've been playing the multiplayer demo and it's pretty....meh. Probably the single player that's awesome (I hope).

While impressive, not all the reviews are in yet. It will probably see a decrease, but then again who knows? But really, when you get to that level it's being picky distinguishing between a few points on a 100-point scale. Is it that important to know whether it's considered one of the best games of all time or just a superb game? Either way, I'd consider it a must-play.

I'm beginning to think the hype surrounding this game isn't just all hype..that it might be goty.

Seeing as 3/4 of those games don't really deserve that spot, I'll hold my breath.

As of today that score is based on 20 critic reviews, the average tripe A game on metacritic gets reviewed by 65-70 review outlets, so it's still too soon to call it the best game of all time.
 
Also, most of these "early reviews" are from Playstation magazines and pretty small sites, except for like maybe IGN and 1UP. I bet the game is gonna be awesome, but I'd wait before saying it'll top the metacritic charts.
 
Ask any honest or half decent game reviewer what do they have to do inorder to get a review copy that early before release, SOE and Naughty Dog do not just hand out copies of the game to everyone.

Uncharted 2 is tempting me to buy a Playstation 3

Im getting a PS3 for Christmas so i'll have to wait until then.

My inner cynic prevents me from being convinced, after all it's still just a third person shooter. However, there must be something good about this game for it to get all those high scores, but for now I will wait for it to actually come out.

Metacritic is garbage. Giant Bomb has put themselves in a position that avoids the metacritic scoring system and I'm glad. Just to clarify, I don't hate the game, just metacritic.

Well I hated uncharted, I only started playing it after a few years, since I stopped half way years ago and shelfed the game. Now i'm going though uncharted to learn the story for uncharted 2. Reviews doesn't lie on gamerankings and metacritic. Alot of ppl hated me for using metacritic and gamerankings who are ps3 fanboys. Now they are probally going to like gamerankings.

Guys, don't forget that sometimes the first reviews are the best (PR related thing). I'm afraid that if you set the bar too high you might be disappointed. 
 
I actually do believe that this game will be good. I liked Uncharted, not loved it, but enough to want to play the sequel. This time of the year will be tough, with so many good games coming out.

i loved uncharted 1 and i knew they weren't bullshitting when they said it would be better in every way.

SoulCalibur being up there is absolutely bizarre.

Eurogamer gave this one a perfect score of 10/10. I think there is a tare in the space time continuum. 

Why? It's the Dreamcast version that scored so highly. It was pretty fucking incredible at the time. Still is really, not like sequels improved much.

Mario Galaxy was above Ocarina of Time for quite a while, and so were a number of other games.
It usually drops eventually as more reviews start coming in, especially these days when we have so many sites and a lot of them will rate a game moderatly poorly, just to recieve more hits.

That doesn't mean the game is good. That means the people who reviewed it thought it was good. Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Metacritic is complete garbage and doesnt average anything correctly in the first place. I dont see who doesnt know by now that Metacritic is a complete joke and saying anything with that in it makes it completely irrelevant and voids it entirely.
 
Saying that in GTAIV in the same sentence is quite a turn off even more, this thread is just full of negatives for me.

I thought Uncharted was extremely solid, and certainly in the top rung of gaming as a whole concerning story execution. But I played it late, and there was virtually no way it could impress on me what it seems to have the people who loved it from release onward. It was fun alright. But I feel it's the characters and pacing that make it so beloved, not the gameplay.
But I see only good things for #2. Naughty Dog is a really learned developer, and Sony has given them every inch they can to help this series along. If this game was off the mark I would be far more surprised than it getting such good reviews before release.
 
That said, 21/20 is retarded. And that reviewer and review-editor deserve being a laughing stock for a while.
