I think it is due to releasing at the worst possible time. I have been paying attention to this game for over a year, then when it finally comes out I have all these triple A games to chose from and I ended up having to put Valkyria off until my gaming agenda is not that busy and it hopefully is cheaper. I really hate to see a game like this do bad, but I guess I am part of the problem.
Valkyria Chronicles

A turn-based tactics game with real-time elements, that tells the story of Squad 7 as they rally together to fight for the freedom of their country, Gallia.
Retail Woe Unto Valkyria Chronicles
"this game doesnt even look good IMO."part of the reason it didn't sell well. it has nothing to do with being on ps3. it would've have sold poorly on xbox360 as well.
IT's good but it's not for everyone. It's really a niche game. Sure it's done really well but look at all the other greater, bigger budget games that have come out around the same time. LBP, Motorstorm, Farcry2, Fallout3, R2, etc are all games that the "average" gamer would most likely pick up before this one.
It's a niche within a niche title. How many copies did anyone really expect it to sell?
Great game or not the title has a very narrow audience and the players that would buy this game are currently distracted by the holiday onslaught. Sega should have released it earlier in the year, but then again I don't know that a game like this one really needs to be an instant smash. VC could have a very long tail on it and slowly sell a fair amount over '09. Lets not forget the Nintendo "evergreen" model either, they're still selling copies of Brain Age for Mario's sake. Companies and players would be wise to use this approach instead of the movie blockbuster/first weekend//immediate gratification model. The rapid turn over and fast food mentality that a lot of players take really needs to end. It's turning into the kind of bullshit that's going to kill the hobby eventually.
A great game and something I hope gets more exposure instead of the typical corporate presumption that great games like this aren't wanted. For the record I think its release window was horrendous. I'd say above all else that was the reason number one.
Oh no , this is such a shame :( I live in the UK and it was very difficult to get a copy of this but I was determined to get it because I knew from the demo that I'd love it to bits. It's one of my favourite games of the year and one that makes me very happy to have a PS3. By the way, I have both Aika and Vyse from SoA in my squad ^_^
Didn't even hear about this game or maybe I did and brushed it off because it's called Valkyria Chronicles. But I think the problem here is a lack of promotion and also just so many fantastic games are out right now.

I rented it from GameFly and it's been sitting in the sleeve for two weeks. I've contemplated just buying it from GameFly, but it appears to be the kind of game that requires a large time investment. Unless I get laid off sometime in the next few weeks, that kind of free-time commitment isn't something I can commit to.
Lack of promotion was a good reason behind it. I knew of it and became interested when I saw the first trailer on PSN, but only people with the system can see those really. Beyond that point it came down to overall marketing and crowded release calendars. Only reason I haven't bought it yet was that I knew it'd be around and wouldn't be hard to find.
The funny thing is, it looks like a really awesome game that I would buy, especially given the critical acclaim. Unfortunately, I won't be owning a PS3, so I won't ever be able to play it. I can only hope they somehow either A) get the go-ahead to port it or B) get the go-ahead to make a sequel and put it out as a multiplatform game. It's just a shame that games like this aren't often allowed a second chance solely due to their poor retail performance, which is often, in the case of games with average to good general reviews, due to poor marketing or console exclusivity.
Came out at a poor time. And since it is not a sequel to an established title, have frag a second multiplayer or t-bagging, it does not surprise me this game did poorly. Saddens me, but not surprising at all. And for the amount of hype, Little Big Planet has done pretty poorly for the amount of attention it got. Less than 400K copies moved in a month and a half....
It's an awesome game, and I'm happy to own it, both because it's a lot of fun and because it feels good to give the nod to the developers. Of course, it took me about two weeks to find a copy, which is probably one of the bigger problems with Valkyria Chronicles - it's fucking impossible to find.
The only store that carries it regularly in my city is EB Games, and they want a $10 premium for it (if they do have copies - two stories had none despite display cases saying otherwise . Other major retailers either do not have plans on getting copies or have shipments with no estimated arrival dates. Blockbusters seemed to have receieved half a dozen copies, half of which sit as unrented copies and the other half buried in the back room because no one knows what the hell Valkyria Chronicles is.
So not only are people extremely unlikely to stumble across it in a store by accident, but you've got your work cut out for you even if you know exactly what the game is and simply want to (god forbid buy a copy.
Just played the PSN demo and this game is pretty awesome!! I'm definately picking it up after the holidays! Thanks for introducing me to it!
I'm probably going to be unpopular for saying this, but... hey Sega why did you waste the money on producing this flop when you could have made the threequel I've been waiting ten years for? Gimme Daytona USA 3 already!
DL'd the demo and loved it, but with so many other games out right now I've been slowly moving my way down a massive pile. Still, I'm going to get this game as the reviews have been great, and the friends I have that played it have said nothing but good about it. That said it should have been released earlier and pushed harder. Sony did this game no favors.
Aaaaaaahhh, this makes me sad. Such a great game. Sega finally makes a valiant attempt at a return to form, and here we go and tell them we're not interested.
I don't think it's an advertising issue. I actually saw quite a bit of advertising for this on the big game sites. If I remember correctly, Gamespot even had a big overlay splash for it.
picked it up on day one and dont regret it one bit, excellent game,a damn shame it isnt selling well:((((
I snatched up a copy a couple of days after it was released, I had to really search for it, and I had the feeling that if I didn't grab it straight away then I wouldn't see a new copy again. I think retailers and shelf space are to blame for this, it just isn't given a proper chance. This is a real shame, because it's easily the best RPG on the PS3, and the best strategy RPG since Final Fantasy Tactics, and that came out a long time ago now.
similar art style to eternal sonata and i know lots of people loved that, not sure how well it selled thought but i have to imagine better.
if it were also on the 360 people who played eternal sonata would see it and be more inclined to buy it, not saying thats the reason why its not selling but its definatly a good reason to release it on the 360 aswell.
Its pathetic that this gem is sitting on the shelf but I bet people are buying Sonic: Unleashed. I hate that terrible games continue to sell...
This is a crime, the game deserves better :(
This is what happens when you supply ultra-limited stock of a super-niche game jam packed in the middle of the already over crowded Christmas games lineup.
This had nothing to do with the Playstation 3 not selling well - decent marketing (I'd hazard very, very, very few even know anything about this game), better stock supplies and a realease early next year would have quadrupled the sales of that game.
I think what we forget is that these games are not made usually with the North American Western Audience in mind but are made for the Japanese Audience..
So basically anything they sell in the West is seen as extra even if what in this case would be called extra is a bit on the low side.
I had been tracking this game since it was first announced. I enjoyed the demo and now have the game under my Christmas tree so to speak. ( I have it just can't play it yet )
I think it is sad that more people are not picking up this game. I'm guessing that SRPGs like this one are too niche for the Playstation 3 Market. Sega needs to port this game to the 360. If PS3 owners are choosing to ignore such an awesome game, put it on the 360 (RPG land).
