Well, 2K declassifies SOME of it, anyway.

I'm not sure if this looks interesting or if it's trying to look interesting.

Barely any footage really. I kind of want to know what it turned into after the overhaul. I like the style though.

Aint gonna lie: I actually liked this game's look back when it was an FPS. I'm also kinda bummed out that they're including sectoids and mutons as enemies in this game. I thought the weird monolith thing they had going with earlier iterations of this game was much more interesting.

My interest has been steadily increasing with the last bits of info that have been coming for this game. My one complaint though is going with the realistic look for the character design. If there is anything to be taken from the 2010 FPS version of this game is that there was way more personality to the stylized look they had going.

I hope it became not just another TPS but they retain XCOM staples like research and production.

This looks cool. I'm sort of over shooters though... but if this has enough interesting hooks I may be looking into this one.

I've had a hands-on with this game in London (I'm a freelancer for a Dutch gaming website), and I really enjoyed it. Since the aritcle is up, I can talk about what I've seen.

Basically, the combat is like Mass Effect but it allows for more tactical decisions and precision. You have two squad mates with you and you order them around, much like Shepard would. But there's the Battle Focus Mode in which you control a cursor and you can exactly point out where you want each of your agents to take position, which enemy to shoot at and which of their skills to activate. There are four classes of squad mates: recon, support, commando and engineer. You level them and yourself up, they have different abilities to choose from, et cetera. Also: permadeath. You can revive agents when they're down, but only for a short period of time. After that, they're dead and gone forever.

It really is 'XCOM, the third-person shooter version', though it's set in the sixties because it's a prequel. It all really felt XCOM-like, even the abilities, the shield logo when taking cover, all that stuff. So to those who are worried about the quality: as far as I've seen, it seems like a genuinely fun game that demands you to use tactics. I just hope it all holds up in the full game.

That helicopter really bothers me. I know it's top secret tech or something, but that thing looks like a damned Apache. What year is this set in? I'm guessing by the Steve McQueen lookalike that it's mid 60s.

@ischar25: I have to agree with you there. I thought this was going to be a Bioshock-esque FPS experience, where you discover the origin of what later became the other XCOM.

Shooting people and animals infected by the monolith goo. And then injecting yourself with the goo to kill 'em better etc.

Thanks for the insider info! Seems like my kind of game, where XCOM wasn't. I hope it pulls of its tactical gameplay.

I just hope that is not a huge deal with the main story. It's a prequel. We already know the 'truth' will come out. I hope the entire game doesn't rest on 'you need to prevent the general public from knowing about aliens!'. That would be kind off a bummer I guess.

still wondering why this needs the xcom name unless it ties in more heavily than i'm seeing. it appears the game could have stood well on its own merits. still more interesting than i expected and i'll keep an eye on it.

IGN has a video with the creators, that primarily focuses on exactly that! What it was, what it became, what its finishing as...a boat load of info and gameplay too

It's 62 if the trailer is anything to go by. Doesn't really look like an Apache though. The canopy is way too perfect a semi-circle to match the apache's longer, more angular cockpit. It's definitely a transport instead of a combat helicopter given the gameplay is gonna be 3rd person squad based shooter. I think it looks old timey enough for a 60's era where we are fighting aliens with new technology. We got the pave low in 67 so, I wouldn't rule out anything. Remember, this is the Cold War era, they probably developed all kinds of prototype helicopters in case war broke out with the Russians. Either way, there isn't enough footage to be too critical.

But if I can buy a prototype Hind and a nuclear tank in MGS3's version of 1964, then I can handle a faux-futuristic helicopter in a game where you fight helicopters.

Technically speaking, the general public don't know about aliens until the beginning of Enemy Unknown 2012 (keeping XCOM and X-Com separate here, I've not played the originals). So bearing that in mind, of course the US Government's going to want to cover it all up. It contributes to the '60s B-Movie/Roswell tropes you'd come to expect from anything involving aliens.

My guess is that the public finding out may be a possible fail state if this game is going to retain the Ironman mode, so part of your job is also to control the spread of information regarding your missions, should there be any witnesses or external reports regarding your department's activities on the field.

@ischar25: Well they can still have all the weird Monoliths and black Goo things. But this looks at least way more "Xcom" than the first lengthy gameplay video. The one where dozens of the same generic looking "videogame aliens" are hiding behind hip high walls that had been spread everywhere.

Fill in every blank with XCOM (it works!)

"A counter attack by the XCOM resulted in the XCOM of XCOM which led to the XCOM of XCOM"

Yup, works like a charm xD

Why would that be a bummer?

If you already know what the state will be in the end and the story focuses solely on trying to prevent that what you already know will happen, from happening; that's a little disappointing. To give an example, remember when Vinny was talking about how he didn't much care for the story of ME3 on a replay because he already knew what he would do and said something along the lines of: 'None of this matters, you're all going to be robot people anyway'.

That argument is a bit lost on the fact that it's a replay, but if you feel like that your first time playing through a game, that's inherently kind of a bummer.

That wouldn't make the game suck or anything like that, but you'd just wish they'd focus on different aspects of the story more.
