I'm the same as you Brad in just wanting to roam around and recruit people. Having perma death on means it's all I've done so far just to make sure I've got good backup options. Tbf the story did seem incredibly not interesting as well lol

Cor! The reviews on it range between proper chuffed, thinking it 'as a soggy bott'm, and just calling it a damp squib. It seems like it might be fun just to faff about in the open world, but then again, some of the dialogue looks a bit naff. Maybe I'll have to 'ave a butchers at this.

(Am I doing this right? The game seems to be laying it on pretty thick.)

Grabbed this after Jeff talked about it on the bombcast, well...grabbed a month of uplay+ so I could have the Ultimate version for basically $20CAD. Good so far!

These Ubisoft PC ports always seem to be busted in one way or another. :/

Even people with 3080s and the fastest CPUs are struggling to have a consistent experience.

I honestly thought the UI flickering was part of some in-game story related interference that you could get rid of through a mission.

I dunno even after watching the gameplay it's for whatever reason still not clicking with me. Something about the whole vibe and style of this game that is somehow absolutely not resonating with me and I'm typically a sucker for these exact type of games.

I want to see their version of London but I don't know if I can handle an even more distopian version of my city right now.

Also, is it just me or do the voices rarely match the characters at all? It's as if they slap their London voices on any character regardless of race (only taking into account gender and age).

As someone who enjoyed the original Watch Dogs, even though it didn't live up to the hype graphically, and as someone whole liked Watch Dogs 2 a lot, this game is leaving an iffy first impression. All the bugs, despite Brad playing on an RTX 3080 and the game seems to have a soulless feel about it, which can be a problem when you have games that don't have a central protagonist. I was hoping the main thing about Legion was that each character would have enough personality to prevent this feeling.

However, I could be getting this impression because of how Brad chose to play the game. But I don't think I'll be in a rush to play this over other games coming out this holiday season.

I thought the intro was stupid, and loved it. In fact I think all of this game is stupid and...really dig it so far. Longpost time.

Honestly, I like this game, but, then again, I have been on a vison quest through my backlog, and, playing watch dogs 2 and liking it, decided to play watch dogs 1, then check back in with 2, and am really enjoying this one on a 2080ti with traced reflections and global illumination that do make it feel 'next gen', in a lot of the same way CONTROL does with reflection surfaces; I was impressed. Seeing trailers and seeing it in motion are very different and I was surprised in a good way by just how much, and how well RT is used in both light, options, and GENERALLY, wide, liberal applicatioon and sensible use of the tech.

The game itself? I don't know, tooo early to tell and this QL is gonna have to wait until I play past wherever Brad is in t- but QL-ignorant hot take; watch dogs is...better than you think it is. You can combo a guy that ends in some Donnie Yen shit with one character, or Keanu Wick someone else, or MI: Meme your way through whatever- but it doesn't end there with immediate positives like rounded (aka _included_ always-accessible melee combo combat with dodge mechanics, Instead of treating the player's avatar as a single accumulator of hero-progresss/power, they scramble/spread it, or let you allocate that yourself, and that's very cool so far in wyat little I've seen, and takes a new angled approach at 'gta clone lol 0/10' which, ......actually no, really, it's not this time. The cars don't even need your help driving. That's about as anti-GTA as it gets without boats on wheels manditory. This game handles it's core systems similarly to GTA in less ways the further they move the series and this game seems to do that the most in my opinion, and that's cool. However, when you do fk* up and it does become a cop chase-

-that cop chase looks 60 fps RTX 1440 DLSS2 cross-gen launch game good, and yes, it is functional, and yes, the cover mechanic is back in form, sadly no love for blind-fire, however, a tradeoff for good melee combat and gun-kata takedowns, fair trade.

This game won me over with RT probably if I'm being really honest, but my actual 'won me over' moment was the button option for 'self driving'. Oh my fking god. No taxi call, sensible and fair risk vs reward for stealing vehicles, and open world fatigue INSTANTLY SOLVED. Sure, red dead's cintematic camerra works, but....yeah if you're going to do a city game where you CAN drive (whic his fine btw, it's watch dogs cars), self driving at this point is like 'oh duh of course' a moment for me and I don't think there's any going back. It'll be harsh to.

Guns feel okay. Not Watch Dogs 1 level punch, but I'm hoping I know nothing with just the starter cap guns. Feels very hitman with the pistol, instead of all pistols are hand-cannons, we'll see about the rest..

Vehicles in a realistic setting near future game about tech as a means of ''medium-travel' to your waypoint. I have played over a a thousand hours of GTA online, so while you can command wheel at any time, this feature is obvious, and genius, it cuts down on bullshit driving. This is so smart, and there is as little time wasted between ass kicking as you want it can start to feel like Sleeping Dogs at times. So, then, while driving is still for sure a thing still, the game then can focus much more (and does), on it's character systems, about parkour and stuff the almost cult-following that Watch Dogs has for the running and flipping with timing,, I am possibly persuaded by where GTA offers the same shit of drive the car, shoot the guy, where this game is certainly more ambitious in...just about everything but writing, however even there I am surprised by how not-irritating it is by comparison to 2.

So, this impromptu review cap; there are more combat systems, it has cool stuff that's new, the game is a next-gen baby like Control was, but it looks like nothing we have without turing/whatever the consoles have, with a multi-character focused loop and online, multiple scenarios and a SICK looking spider bot (with awesome reflections), and a roundhouse that would make tony jaa raise an eyebrow.........But, with a lot of Ubisoft packed-in-feature-typicals like, "why am I floating?" "LOL. what the f are they doing!" as well, so....i guess so what, we knew this? Lol, I've enjoyed some vinny-like experiences with the pedestrian behavior aggressiveness and interpretation of scene/pathing. ...park a car in front of a subway entrance. You'll see, but basically when the AI wants to do something, by god, they are gonna make that shit happen, and it's going to look very strange but good for them.

Overall this still seems to retain, if not lose some of the featuresets of what I like the gameplay sandbox opportunity future playlist garbage meat that is Watch Dogs, I have a sad suspicion that slow motion is missing from this, god do I miss that as a basic function on gunplay- max-payne-buttons in games automatically are better shooters.

Anyway, I don't think it's so bad just yet, and while i expected jank, oh it's there in full Ubi form but almost in the way that isn't really that harmful. This game looks amazing, the ai is definitely TRYING to do some complex behaviors- (that uncanny val. extreme where super-graphically rendered humans are ...believable until their sometimes smart, sometimes too-literal if;then command scpripting becomes that kind of weird you just have to stop and watch every console generation). Also, you can tell in design some aspects are still very current gen, in part because of ubisoft formula, but also because it's a video game that began it's development before the tech it adopted existed yet. ..So, that is actually a win and does make it a next gen and cross gen game that appears to be good on at least the next gen level.

legion in general becomes this big mish mash of some of the coolest visual 'promise of the future' in graphics, as well as generating validation for it's sequelexistence, and once you map run to a back paddle instead of R2 (the fuck Ubisoft), this game's aaaight. I will note though, finally that the way this game impliments "tracing game tech of the future, today!" is on display in a force not unlike the way the jump to x360 was in visuals, there are other things that are very much still last gen apparent, like the npc repeats, the limits on crowds, while the game does make major strides for sake of fun and does it, it doesn't expand gameplay, just replaces, tweaks or refines it...And that actually can be totally fine, if famiiliar, and that's what I'm getting from WDL..

TLDR TIME

As an entry next-gen title, especially in light of Cyberpunk being cancelled, rip, watch dogs legion is something you could play and have a fun with

Hey why don't more games do the Saint's Row thing of putting turn signals in the physical world? I get that it's unrealistic but it is a trillion times better than spending every moment in the open world staring at a mini-map.

It's never worth the performance hit to use ultra graphics settings, especially if you're streaming. Besides the difference usually being insignificant, the video bitrate will not be able to show whatever minimal added benefits the ultra settings give you.

Right after Brad mentioned he wished it was more over the top like rogue legacy and they should have someone with excessive flatulence, I found someone that had exactly that trait, they randomly alert guards with it.

My biggest complaint so far is that 95% of vehicles driving down the road have neither a driver or a passenger. They are just totally empty

Played about 2 hours so far. My initial impression is that it is a really cool concept in a not very good game.

  • There's some cool stuff around the edges of the recruitment system, even if it mostly boils down to a way to get you to do some boilerplate missions. I like that an agent's history expands as you do stuff with them, from actions they took in a mission right down to giving you the names of people they recruited and who they have hospitalized.
  • I don't know what system they used to make the player character voice samples but it really, really didn't work. Every character I've recruited sounds like a complete idiot. Part of that is the writing, which seems intent on throwing in random British slang every other word, but a lot of it is the voice sampling. The accents seem to range from "unintelligible mumbling" to "vaguely offensive ethnic stereotype." If the Bagley character is supposed to represent the ultimate interactive AI, then the character voices are the perfect example of the shitty AI we have in present-day.
  • The writing is mind-blowingly, incomprehensibly bad. I get that I shouldn't be expecting great insight from a Ubisoft game, but this is on a whole other level of bad. All the writing so far is on the level of Baby's First Poli-sci Class. "If a product is free, then you might be the product" is literally a thing I heard in an audio log, right before I rolled my eyes so hard I could see the back of my skull.

@knoxt: Some nice ease of play options get overlooked cause people just don't mention them in reviews thus they don't get put in other games cause no one is so excited about them and telling your exec to give more time to add the self-driving car's option in a sequel goes moot. lol Far cry 4 had self-driving and it was great. I could relax and see the sights listen to a podcast f around in real life eat etc and still make progress to my goal without the game teleporting me to a location and taking me out of the story. It's super satisfying.

PS people overlook this but the watchdogs 2 game had some clever levels dealing with subtle racism and stereotyping in a way. It flew over most heads cause well most don't have that exact interaction but I know friends who appreciated the missions. These games are obviously cash grabs and sterile to fit max taste but it shows the soul to try something iffy is still there when they are ok front in the center making the main character a non-stereytpical hero or having weirder missions that might rub some the wrong way in this climate.

Ubisoft need a complete overhaul of everything they do. Graphics, art, animation, game design. This looks so bland, like it obviously has a thing its going for but its so surface level.

Here's hoping this stream inspires some drive in this game for me. I don't know what it is exactly, but I can't really get into this game. It's procgenerated characters, yet so far as I've played, it seems very interested in telling its main story, whereas I would say the strength of a design like that would shine in the sidequests. Maybe I just need to play more? Anyway, this should be fun either way.
