CD-I Don't Know About These Games, Man

I know that Defender of the Crown might not have been much of a game but it came out in 1986 for the Amiga and was something of a tech-demo for the graphical capabilities. (So if Dan want to compare it with Zelda he should compare it with The Legend of Zelda and not A Link to the Past...)

The Philips CD-i... It's from an era we'd rather not remember.

Dark Castle was actually kind of a cool game. I remember playing Dark Castle, Ancient Art of War, Ancient Art of War at Sea, and Shuffle Puck, on my uncles Mac. ^This version looks awful. The original came out in 86, and is somehow still 100x better. You were meant to be able to aim the arm up and down real fast with the mouse. Game was still hard as fuck, awkward controls, but novel and well done for 1986.

CD-I ...... I don't think they are very good either...

Dark Castle needed to stay in the tray a little longer, that shit was hilarious... that was probably the best of the bunch, sadly

The guy who made the original version of Dark Castle went on to create the software that became Adobe Flash. Dark Castle's animations and sound effects were pretty mind-blowing when it originally came out in 1986! Almost certainly it was an influence on Prince of Persia and if anything I'd say it has aged slightly better. The version to play these days is Return to Dark Castle in the Mac App Store.

Well this is probably my favorite GB video of the year. That Inca theme song, not to mention the pan flute solo, was fucking magical. More games should have actual theme songs and not just instrumental stuff.

Dark Castle was a great game. hard too.

Part of the problem is that they want to play it like a modern action game and you had to play it really deliberately.

I'm used to seeing it on a Mac so no idea how the controls translate for controller.

The look of absolute disgust on Jeff during that first Dark Castle level made the last 1hr and 53m totally worth it.

Thunder in Paradise has the best terrible closing theme to any show ever. I used to only watch that show for the end credits. Do yourself a favor and listen to it now.

The CD-i as always fascinated me so I'm going to enjoy this.

I remember kinda liking Burn Cycle. It was cool in it's day.

All these CD-I games seem so bad.

I really want the next Breaking Brad to be Dark Castle on the CD-I.

Yeah, I'll go ahead and chime in my support for the original Mac version of Dark Castle. I played the hell out of it and its sequel, Beyond Dark Castle, when I was a kid. Playing with a mouse to aim your rocks was the way to go. This CD-I version looked unplayable.

Like others have said, though, it was pretty amazing for its time. There weren't many games that had that quality of animation and sound at the time.

Plus it even did that thing where it looked at your Mac's clock and if it was near Christmas, there would be Christmas decorations. Friggin loved that little easter egg as a kid.
