Dark Souls II Getting More Updates With Scholar of the First Sin

Saw this one coming.

Didn't anticipate PC players having to buy it again. That's really shitty.

Since I already have it on PS3 and PC this will all be free for me. I've long since falled off the DSII train though, maybe this will help me get back on.

That is if I somehow resist the urge to buy a PS4 for Bloodborne or if Bloodborne turns out to be bad.

@patrickklepek Doesn't the announcement say PC owners will get it as a free update as well? I thought only the PS360 users would not get the visual update.

The new balance, NPCs, and stuff like that are a free update but I guess the hot new grafix are only if you buy it again.

This whole DirectX9/DirectX11 thing is confusing. As a PC gamer who has DirectX11-compatible hardware I should get the visual upgrade right.

The press release doesn't either, which is really concerning. Their twitter is being really vague about that as well, which makes it seem like they were gauging whether they could get away with it or not.

I never bought the DLCs or the PC version so I'm all over this for PS4. But it comes out so soon after Bloodbourne that it's a pretty easy decision to just wait for a pricedrop.

Yeah, the press release is intentionally vague. I suspect PC owners will have to pony up. I'll tweak the subhead, though.

Really nice to see Dark Souls II is getting continued support past the DLC pass. Small tweaks and constant patches. Pretty good.

@larrydavis: they don't FromSotware have said that update 1.10 will be given to PC owners for free, that includes all this extra stuff bar the DLC

Don't want to sound ungrateful, but I wish they'd bring over the first Dark Souls.

Being a bit of a souls addict at this point, I have to say an opportunity to play on the PS4 will not be passed up, although I think I need the 4 month break first to properly enjoy it. Good timing!

After playing Bloodborne it's hard to go back to the Souls games. I recently played through Lords of the Fallen and it just felt dated. Combat aside DS still has great level design and bosses so maby it'll be worth checking out for that alone.

If PC players do have to pay for the upgrades that's a pretty shitty way to treat consumers. And really unfortunate considering how much goodwill they had gained with the PC version of this game. Why flush it down the drain?

I was really considering buying DS2 after watching the Load Our Last Souls videos (which are phenomenal) but with this DLC announcement and proposed changes to the PC version, maybe I will have to wait until after April. Darn, I was really itching to play the new Dark Souls too

Buy it again to get the visual upgrade on PC huh. As someone who pre ordered DS2 and last month bought a PS3 just to play Demon's Souls, they might be eroding my good will to the point they become a only-buy-it-at-75%-off dev.

@patrickklepek The DLC has been bundled up on Xbox360 and has just been uploaded onto the Xbox Marketplace today. (unaware of PSN)

What, what was it? I saw one burning creature I didn't recognize and a wyvern at Heide's. It's just a current-gen port? Or is there some Aldia-focused piece of content like the "scholar"-part and the shot of the dragon implies?

I doubt it'll be possible but I really hope I can transfar my saved game between PS3 and PS4.

is it a new DLC pack similar to one of the "crown" packs? I hope so. I'm currently working through the crown DLC packs right now. They are proving to be difficult (yeah, really). Hopefully I'll have conquered them by the time this comes out. I really dig how they continue to support this game, I really like it even though I still kind of have a soft spot for the original Dark Souls.

Nah, kidding. I burned myself out hard on Dark Souls II. By the time I'm ready for another playthrough, I'll have bought all this DLC for $3.24 in a Steam Sale.

Well, now I can feel less bad about not buying DS2 on PS3. I might pick this up, but I'm more excited by Bloodbourne. I'm guessing they are releasing them so close together to buffer each other in case Blood tanks?

This is one amazing game [series] I'm not jaded about purchasing again, for the PS4. I'm also a sucker for a good man-on-dragon fight and I see there's a new red wyrm stinking up the Heide Tower region, asking to be put down.

If you like Dark Souls II and haven't purchased the DLC for it, then this should be a buy for you. Each DLC is practically a separate AAA game.

Footnote: "Beyond the scappold lie, beyond the witcha bluh…" From Soft really needs to improve the audio mix in their trailers. Mumbly audio? Check. Background music louder than mumbly audio? Check.

If there's a big existing owners discount like the recent Sleeping Dogs remaster then I don't actually mind.

Not going to re-buy the game at full price for an upgrade though.

Is it just me or is the sound mixing on this video really poor? The (terrible) wailing music drowns out the speech, but was anything beyond generic fantasy phrases being said? I (think I) caught the phrase "such is our fate" and "slumbers in the realm of..." - like what does that even mean other than "I am a fantasy game."

I love the souls games but I wish the trailers were a bit more informative when it comes to putting across information about the gameplay.

I enjoyed my 80 or so hours with Dark Souls 2, but I fell off super hard and stopped playing without beating what I suspect is the last boss. If this graphical update makes the game look like all of that pre-release footage, then I'd probably do whatever I needed to do to play it that way.

Wow, I'd have to buy the ENTIRE game again to get a graphical update? I can understand going from PS3 to PS4, and Xbox 360 to Xbox One, but they can't simply update the base game on the PC?

I'm genuinely curious to know if it's actually possible for them to upgrade the base game on PC. Now that my initial knee-jerk reaction has gone away and I had time to think about it, I'm curious to know if they actually have a good reason for forcing PC players to buy the game again if they want updated graphics. If it's updated textures and stuff like that, then I can't see why they can't just update the base game. So in my mind, that leaves the only reason for a whole new game having something to do with going from DirectX9 to DirectX11. I'll be honest, I don't know much about that at all, so perhaps they have a legit reason for being unable to just simply update the game.

Hmmm.. Not sure about this... That footage looks like it has some heavy post processing happening on it. I'll have to see some real PC footage to justify another purchase.

@jasonr86: it's possible that they won't make any PC game for a while after this comes out, since Play Station exclusives tend to stay that way, so might as well cash out when they still can.

I feel like I never really got deep enough into DSII and was never able to play the DLC, despite Dark Souls being my favorite game of last gen, and probably one of my favorite games of all time. My GPU ran into some overheating issues this summer, and while I'm grateful to have been given a PS4, I have been wanting a way to play really any of the Souls games, so I am quite excited for this. And a week after Bloodborne, no less!

That said, while I'm grateful for From to put this out on the new consoles, I can't help but wish there was a port for the original Dark Souls, too. I'd almost prefer that, to be honest...
