Random users' Twitter quotes in a trailer is a thing now?

All I could think when I saw those quotes was "I guess they couldn't find any positive comments from an official journalist"

http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256658900/movie_max.webm?t=1449496219

Yeah, I know they could very easily find multiple sources for these boxquotes, so I don't know why they are using random anonymous twitter quotes. It gives off a very bad impression. The fact that they have two versions of this trailer, one with twitter quotes and one with review quotes, is even more bizarre. Who is each targeted at? What difference does it make? I'd love to be a fly on the wall of the marketing meetings surrounding this decision.

The worst is that beaten to death "shut up and take my money" quote. We, as a people, should collectively move on.

They have more in other languages with different fans from twitter, too. At least one I saw was all in German? I wonder how many regional variations of this same trailer there are.

I don't know why it gives off a bad impression aside from some of the quotes being lame. I think it's cool that they are giving some seemingly random folks the same spotlight as throwaway review site blurbs, but then I don't care about most gaming sites in general or their reviews and pull quotes, and am more inclined to listen to friends and the community's opinions on the games I'm interested in.

I see something like this reinforcing how huge the fan support for the game is and was. Rally is a pretty small subset of the already niche racing game genre, with some fairly die hard fans.

@spacetrucking: yeah they have been adding content consistently once per month since the first early access release. It alternated between updates with full set of stages and a couple car and modes. I was excited because they just added the Polo, which is my favourite current rally car.

I'm hoping they keep adding content, even if it is DLC. I'll happily pay for more Pikes Peak cars or more stages. I'd love to see the Australia rally added at some point or the Italian or French. They have managed to hit most of the biggest rallies already though.

Very smart of them to use twitter quotes. Free positive publicity. Average users aren't going to know the difference.

Not really, they're using quotes from regular twitter users because the entire project was very fan feedback driven.

This game is fantastic, provided you don't need a lot of framework to give you an excuse to drive. I put more than fifty hours in with a 360 controller on a substandard PC and loved all of it. The single player (last I saw) is basically "Drive through all the stages" but once you get to the higher difficulties you realize you're barely getting close to what the cars can do and have to completely change your style.

Right now I'm waiting on a PC upgrade to get back to the game but as a rally racing fan it's simply required playing.

@mub: I'm pretty sure this very site has coverage of Dirt Rally in the form of an Unfinished.

The reason they're making trailers out of fan reactions/quotes is because of how far they lost their way in the last few games. They've slowly been losing their audience, so this game being as good as it is, and the way it's catered toward their fanbase specifically is a big boon for them. Why wouldn't you celebrate such a positive fan reaction at that point?

@ben_h: That's exciting to hear. If they follow up with Grid 2 level of DLC, this might be the definite rally game for a few years at least. Are Finland and Sweden already in there? The snow stages always feel so chaotic and fun. And Finland has some of the biggest jumps I can remember.

BTW that Polo car in dark blue really catches the eye. Those wheel arches make it look like a DTM (or maybe it's just a VW trademark look).

This was a great thing to be apart of for Early Access and I'm super glad they're taking it to consoles. Great game, even as someone who doesn't go crazy with racing games. Played a ton with a 360 controller and loved it.

I used to own the car in the thumbnail.

I think this game is willing me to buy it - I've had (non rally) versions of two others from the trailer and very nearly bought a Metro 6R4 at an auction in a moment of drunkenness.

I wish I'd bought that 6R4. One of the maddest cars ever made.

Huh, the trailer on Steam shows quotes from gaming sites and car magazines. Anyhow, I love this game. Pick this up if you're interested in sim games. Comparing it to other recent rally games doesn't do it justice. It's a contender for best sim of the year.

Haha, that's fair. My dad had an old 92' Subaru Legacy which was just a clunker, but it somehow lasted beyond 120,000 km's.

I don't know what it was about rally cars of that era or the 90's, just a different time I guess.

They just added Sweden in this update and Finland was the October update. Both are insanely fun, though Finland is also ridiculously difficult at times.

If you were thinking of buying this game I"ll make the following comments. I bought it months ago and I think it is great. It is the Dark Souls of driving. Very demanding, requires repetition to master and can be punishing if you have no self restraint. I loved Dirt 1 and this game is the most like it that I have played since then. Rally is harder though.

@mason20: Hahaha, sweet screenshot. Yeah, I guess all I can say is brake earlier - I almost always start to brake after the small jump before the hairpin, maybe even being a little more cautious before the jump (or basically before the last uphill then downhill slope where the hairpin is).

If you're going too fast through the jump you simply don't give yourself enough time to brake - because well, surprise, you can't slow down your car while you're launching mid-air, haha. So you've got to shorten the jump by a bit, land the car, then have enough track to actually slow the car down enough before the hairpin and shift your weight to apply an e-brake turn.

Ahh... I see my problem then. General ineptitude and gravity, gotcha!

But, yeah you're advise was spot on and after a few passes on said course I've gotten the handle of it much better. Thanks!

The twitter quotes thing is a bit weird, but honestly the game is really good...probably the best racing game this year in terms of actual driving enjoyment. (Not as many cars and rally tracks as I would like...but then again, there's a lot of replayability just from learning to not crash on the stages that are there)

This is damn good. Taking a bit to get comfortable with it. I had just started Dirt 3 for the first time recently and I think that messed me up with this. I'm digging it though.
