Still not sure what kind of game this is, but I almost don't care at this point. I'm willing to play whatever genre it is to get in this world.

@trilogy: Stealth/survival rogue-like-like. Plenty of footage on Youtube since they did a closed alpha with press and youtubers.

@kdr_11k: Ooooh, a roguelike, you say? Now, I'm in. I had just assumed it was another sorta "standard" weird first-person indie story-based game...thing. Hearing it's a roguelike makes me exponentially more interested in this game now.

Hm, it actually makes me much less interested. I was hoping for a full-on immersive sim.

It's actually been somewhat available on PC for a while, although only to backers, meaning there's quite a bit of gameplay content of it out there :) It really looks like it lives up to its presentation, despite some clear early-access bugs 'n things.

I think someone watched the Prisoner one time to many and decided that we needed a similar themed game. If the narrative holds them I'm intrigued (but big bag of NOPE when the possum entered the picture).

Nope nope nope. Beating a live animal, even a rat, is what a sociopath would enjoy. I think the developer made a huge mistake think they were edgy when they were showing something despicable. I hope everyone at Compulsion Games take a sit down and think about some aspects of what they have made.

Rogue-like, survival, and crafting? Well, so much for that. Only thing missing is 'procedurally generated levels' and this game would be every type of cancer killing videogames for me. Amazing trailer, though.

As someone in the backer alpha - can confirm the procedurally generated map.

WHF was one of the first games I've backed on Kickstarter and for the past year or so it's been nice to read through their weekly game development updates and seeing everything slowly appear with each game update.

I have to admit though, the whole rogue-like/survival aspect is kind of a bummer. I have had a few runs start off with bad resource spawns in the starting district which makes trying to establish yourself in the City biomes a real pain. I wish they weren't opposed to having a respawn mode for people that just want to explore the environment and all their scenarios.

Ahh, cheers. Will definitely give this one a miss. I'm always reminded of Roger Ebert's criticism of games as art all those years back. He claimed games lacked authorial intent, we all had a good laugh at the old guy 'not getting it'... and then Minecraft happened. Guess he got the last laugh.

been looking forward to this since the crowdfunding - looks super interesting and creepy. It definitely plays different than what I think most people are expecting though, so I'd caution to look for the streams/archives of past plays of this one just to make sure you know what it is.

I would argue that that's the point. I haven't played the game so I don't have the rest of the context, but right away it appears that the message is that having joy alone is a severe emotional imbalance, allowing us to take pleasure in things we normally wouldn't without remorse. I think the pinata was a fine way of displaying that with gameplay mechanics, disturbing as it was.

From the trailer I was expecting a FP experience with a story...not an early access roguelike, yeah....I'm not interested anymore unless there is some sort of story mode or something.

yeah i think a tighter scripted story is what i was expecting and would work better with what they're establishing here ala bioshock infinite. that was still a helluva experience, haters be damned.

i'll still probably give it a shot based on the trailer alone, though. procedural gameplay may just be the path of least resistance for a smaller studio to create a complete experience.

Leaving aside that it's supposed to portray what a monster you become when you use Joy I doubt that rat was brought to the party alive or it would have run away. They just brought a dead rat to the party and kept beating it until the "candy" came out.

It's not like this is a Claudio Fergasso film where they actually killed animals on camera, because they wanted to shock people with their already horrific cannibal film. This doesn't endorse animal cruelty in any way. In other words, CONTEXT is important here.

Also in a world where we play video games in which we literally murder other humans constantly, hitting which might already be a dead rat with a bat isn't that big a deal...

Glad someone mentioned this before I did. Animal lovers are so strange with where they place their priorities as if humans have personally ruined their life.

As for the game this is looking great. Getting a Bioshock vibe from it for some reason.

This is taking an incredible amount of story stuff from 1984 and Brave New World...hope it doesn't lean on taking story beats from books too much.

Of all the things to be outraged about in games, or even at e3, you've chosen a weird place to draw the line. Literally any other game involving the killing or murder of another person is a better case for your argument.

Right? In the show that's like 70% about shooting people or some other kind of combat, this is the one thing that explicitly frames the violent act as a horrible nightmare.

I really like the concept but if it is as story-driven as it comes across I think early-access is a weird model. I don't want to get halfway through the story and hit a 'more coming soon' screen so I'll happily wait until it's done. All assumptions on my part as I've never seen it in action so I might have to check out some gameplay footage

Looks amazing. It'll be interesting to see how the character's perception of the world changes throughout as a result of taking(or not taking) Joy and if the story diverges any. As far as the violence with the dog, it's not meant to be enjoyable for the player or the main character. It's an act of world building to show what a person's perception while under the influence of Joy could be like. It could bring into question what certain characters are really up to in later scenes in which things are seemingly tranquil. It can lead into some pretty big reveals and show just how messed up things really are.

Well that killed about 50 % of my interest. I was hoping for a real storydriven first person experience to be honest.
