Final Fantasy XIV Looks Better In Beta Than In Alpha

Did we really need this video?

I hate to be in the "Is this news?" crowd, but...  a Beta looks better then the Alpha.  Woo-hoo?

Still looks like an MMORPG.

Um, am I the only one who's going to point out that the Beta fight was much more involved and interesting than the Alpha one? It looks like there's quite a bit going on in combat, instead of standing still auto-swinging. That's a gigantic improvement from the FFXI formula. This game might actually have a chance.

The combat looks absolutely abysmal, even for a MMO.  It's been well over a decade and right clicking on rats until they die still seems to be a MMO staple.

I don't understand the point of this video.

I don't trust the Japanese to be able to do interesting MMO combat.  They can only get it right in single player games every now and then.
 
I'd so like to explore your big crazy world, Square, but if you can't make your combat more actiony, I just can't justify the time spent there.

FF is such a departure from WoW - having started with FF I found WoW unplayable, and downright terrible. Being different from WoW is enough, since every Free-To-Play and even Pay-To-Play MMO since WoW has been a direct copy of it. FFXI is already a lot more attractive than WoW, 14 will look gorgeous. MMO Combat isnt' gonna change - that's like asking for a new driving system in a racing game - it's part of the formula.   As for what makes it a better choice, that's simple: One Character. The Job system is what I love about FFXI and they're keeping it similar in FFIV - it eliminates the need to redo basic things; get a chocobo, get an airship pass, story missions etc all of these things stary with your character regardless of what job you're currently leveling or your level (although there are level requirements for some things). Yep, that's an MMO. 

I am looking forward to this game. some of the comparisons are pretty meh, but at least I feel like I won't be put off by anything if I've already played XI

THis game better support custom soundtracks on PS3. I don't want to listen to that shit MMO music for 5000 hours. 

Look forward to trying this out.  FF11 was great.  This will be the first next gen MMO-RPG on console.
 
Hoping it forces Blizzard to announce their next MMO-RPG. Since they have a history of combating competitive MMO's with trailers and announcements.  
 
 

Its still early, it will look better I am sure. I am excited this MAY BE the first MMO I ever play full time.

It does seem to be striking that mmo sweet spot between being pretty and being able to run on older computers. Now lets just hope they fix the brick wall of a learning curve from XI

Combat looks boring imo.  I will still pick it up and give it a go though.

A game that looked gorgeous in alpha looks even more gorgeous in beta, nice.  This will probably be my next MMO of choice, as I hold a soft spot for FFXI still.

lol holy fuck.  the combat is mind numbingly boring.  any MMO that can be played on a console is most likely not very fun at all.  

lol the alpha looks way better.... you can actually see what's in the distance. the beta is all blurry. 
the lighting is not better, you can just see much less. wtf square.

A little lighting and some texture work can go some ways

I can not possibly think of anything more f*ing boring than a Japanese Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game or a JMMORPGWTFBBQLAWLSZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

A few people have partly covered all this but....
 
People here have been giving the Old Republics Graphics a hard time. Me and others who know better keep pointing out it is Alpha and a Video like this shows what jumps can occur from an Alpha to a Beta and optimisations and improvements from that Beta to Live and then from Live to improving it every month there still.
 
I would love to see someone make a WOW video like this. Go to the same places/do something as a video of Alpha and beta and then how it is in live today. Massive difference at each stage.
 
People did it for Warhammer as well, it was just to similar to WOW in a lot or respects to justify switching for a lot of players and with a few other issues why it never did so well BUT the graphics jump from Alpha to beta in that game was quite a bit.
 
Design or build something with graphics - Make it work, Get the elements of it in there. THEN make it look pretty.
Always has and always will be that.
 
Of course people have already mentioned that an MMO will never look Amazing as your stand alone game as it needs to share what is going on with a crap load of people non stop all day every day just about.

Did that rat just do a jumping-backflip-tail-whip-attack?  I'm buying this.  (No not really).
