Having a Blast at the Xbox Fall Showcase

Jeff, Ben, and Brad were invited to look at the hottest new Xboxes, and the games that are coming to them. This video doesn't have any of those. There were also quiches.

Sep. 20 2017

Cast: Jeff, Ben

Posted by: Ben

Episode Notes:

Note: This is NOT Ben's Lens, which maintains a high standard of production quality and would never include footage captured with an upside-down smartphone.

@notnert427: To be fair, they always did videos like these. The difference is that those videos were more about interacting with other game journalists at the events and, more importantly, were uploaded alongside tons of actual well-produced content. With the absence of that, the tone feels different. It feels like nit-picking but I hope staff knows that some of us are longtime fans and are only trying to be constructive in our criticism.

@notnert427: Your points are understandable, but I think people (in general) on this site sometimes forget that professional content is off-set with the whimsical, and vice-versa.

I can practically guarantee you all of the questions in your post will be answered once the GB crew returns from the Showcase, unpacks their equipment, compiles their notes, finds time to gather everyone together, and sets up all the equipment necessary to produce professional content. This video is more of a "Hey, this is what we're up to right now. This is what these events look like. Here's a hint at some stuff we might cover in future content, but in the meantime, enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be a games journalist. More to come later!"

I hope that's the case, but it sounded like they recorded the bombcast after going to this event and didn't mention much of anything about it outside of a brief discussion of Forza 7 being pretty. FWIW, I'm fine with the whimsical stuff, but I also actually care about the Xbox One X (though, sadly, it seems I'm among few there), so this video's tone/"coverage" irks me a bit. I felt it worth noting, and I'm trying to keep my criticism constructive here. I still have much love for this place and the GB staff, but this one missed the mark for me.

You beat me to it. Suffice it to say that I agree.

@thatothertime: you might say that some people have stated their opinions on this very video, and some of those opinions weren't thrilled with it for understandable reasons. I love GB as much as the next guy and enjoy the wacky stuff but as a longtime fan I no longer gobble up anything the guys put up regardless of content or quality - especially when all the Vinny produced stuff with the bare minimum of production values is so great.

FWIW, the staff talks seriously about the Xbox event in the Go Rig or Go Home stream, with some help from chat questions on it. This was appreciated. Thanks, GB staff and chat.

@humanity: Accidentally deleted original post, laptop touchpad set to tap click, if only had this luck with lottery tickets. I just want to see GB Eric Andre it up. Not become another Polygon. No offence to Polygon.

Yeah get what you're saying, but why do people want to change GB? Just go look for something that suits you if you don't like it, if you want serious content don't come to GB, there's a lot of serious things out there.

I always saw GB as a place to come for a laugh and find out about some games, personally I trust Jeff's taste and if he says something is cool I'm like "yeah, that's cool, I see why". It's more about getting a curated list of games not in depth content.

Politically correct = boring. Donesn't offend anyone but also doesn't excite anyone.

I don't care about the video really, but being not funny and then just saying something isn't funny yourself after you already did it and being awkward has it's limits for being entertaining.

@thatothertime: the thing is that noone is asking for serious discourse 100% of the time here. I'm sure anyone that has come to enjoy GB over the years appreciates the goofiness that in various degrees permeates all the things they do and which is so unique as compared to all other mainstream sites. Whenever people complain about their goofs or even about Dan acting a certain way it's simply saying "hey I get you guys were goofin as always but I didn't think this goof worked out." It's not some binary situation where you want 100% zaniness all the time or if you complain that means you only want hardcore straight laced news reporting - there is a sweet spot in between that Jeff and the guys have managed to walk so effortlessly over the years, but sometimes they lean one way or the other a bit too much. Most importantly I hope the people that do take the time to write a level headed criticism are doing so because they hope it will get read and maybe make the site better in the long run. No one has ever benefited from an echo chamber of cheers and high fives irregardless of their efforts.

I tend to like these type of videos. However this just seems lifeless and pointless, like if I tried to copy past these type of GB videos.

many people here seems to complain about this kind of content, so I just wanted to say that I enjoy it. I don't really care about games before they are released.

This was a "dumb" thing, as Jeff would say. A bit self-indulgent but I get it lol. A 6-minute video isn't gonna kill anyone.

The only thing i could think the whole time was "I bet this video would get hit with a content ID strike on youtube because of the muisc playing in the background"

But then it played through Youtube. What a time to be alive.

Much like the Xbox Originals program on the 360, I have trouble caring for backwards compatible original Xbox games if they aren't going to put the effort into adding achievements.
