Nero was Emperor of Rome from the years 54 to 68. His reign ended with his death at the age of thirty by suicide. In the year 64, the people of Rome turned against him after a great fire devastated the city; rumors spread that it was Nero himself that had set the city ablaze in order to clear land for the construction of a palace. The incident is also the origin of the old phrase "Nero fiddled while Rome burned."
Nero was the last of the Julio-Claudian imperial dynasty.
