Listening to the Giantbombcast earlier this week and hearing the crew say that they thought there was no way that Reach would outsell Activision's Modern Warfare 2  in the first week of launch on the 360 alone, this got me thinking. Is it true?

MW2 sold 4.9 million on the 360 week one, simply Huge sales. Now that said I am not really sure as Reach is at around 770,000 pre-orders in North America alone and it has 7 weeks till launch.

Place your bets, but I wouldn't count Reach out. Halo 3 sold 3.8 million copies first week and keep in mind that was when around 25 million Xbox 360s were around. This time there is around 45 million Xbox 360s in the world.

Update: Halo Reach is at 1,071,366 Pre-orders in America alone with 5 weeks left till launch.

    Halo: Reach Pre-orders; 1,255,006 4 weeks left
    MW2 Pre-orders; 1,857,294 total

Halo: Reach Pre-orders; 1,458,990 with 3 weeks left

    Latest Update

Sept 6th Halo: Reach Pre-orders; 1,691,344 with 2 weeks left

Reach looks like it will win in number of Pre-Orders

    http://www.vgchartz.com/article/81930/halo-reach-pre-orders-pass-two-million-worldwide/

    Latest Update

Day one and Reach sold 3 million copies beating MW2`s 2.1 record.

I'm not sure the exact amount, but I'm sure Halo Reach's sales won't be as good as Modern Warfare 2. It will be a better game, no doubt.

I don't know, for some reason, I believe there are more MW fanboys than Halo ones. But I can hope, I can hope that Reach takes down those records MW2 set.

It simply won't outdo MW2. MW2 was sold across three platforms, Halo: Reach is only on one.

Simply a disadvantage for Halo Reach.

I would love Halo: Reach to outsell MW2 but it won't. MW2 is pretty much the epitomy of the lowest common denominator and it sells well for the same reason that Michael Bay films sell.

It would be pretty funny if IW released a map pack for MW2 right on the day Reach came out. I'm pretty sure they were contracted to 4 map packs before the shit hit the fan for them, so who knows.

i'd be surprised if another game ever out sold modern warfare 2. i also think halo's popularity peaked with 3, but i may be wrong on the basis that i pay no attention to the halo community whatsoever. however, having said all of that, who gives a shit about sales (apart from investors, of course).

I don't think that HALO: Reach can sell as many copies on launch as CoD: MW2.  HALO is out and MW2 is the "new cool thing."  It's going to sell a lot because there is obviously a very loyal fan base and it's still somewhat considered to be cool, but it's not what it used to be.

Hmmm. I would be surprised if it even sells over 4m . I'll say around 3.5m copies in the first week. I am eager to see though.

If speaking only in first week sales...and on only the xbox 360...and maybe taking into consideration the console pack in...and seeing how halo is a game that almost everyone into games knows about...no.

No, it won't. It's not because of the game because I truly believe that this game will be a million times better than MW2 was. CoD has just established itself as the casual game that everyone (or almost) with a console buys.

I'm very interested in Reach and have pre-ordered it in fact but It has no shot at surpassing Modern Warfare 2's sales figures. If it was a full-on Master Chief, Halo 4 that would be a different story but Reach has to prove that it's more than just another ODST.

I'm definitely looking forward to Halo Reach, but I'm just not sure if it could beat MW2. Unless they start promoting the shit out of Reach, MW2 will still beat it in terms of sales. Gameplay-wise Reach kicks MW2 out of the water.

I really doubt that it would sell as many as MW2 its first week.  Halo is still a big franchise but it isn't Call of Duty, even on just the one platform. I'd bet that even Black Ops on 360 week 1 will outsell Reach's week 1.

Reach is coming off of ODST which people weren't that hot on, and Wars before that which probably confused a lot of people, and this game like the both of those doesn't have the main character in it, and isn't numbered.  All of those things could hurt it.  I'm sure it will still do really well though, I'm saying its franchise strength is probably lower now than it has been in a long time and CoD is just the opposite.

I hear too many 12 year olds call Halo "stoopid" compared to Call of Duty because its "unrealistic" since it takes more than one bullet to kill you.

So, no, I don't think it will be able to surpass the sales of hyper-realistic MW2...

It doesn't have a number tacked on the end, so no matter how good it is it will never out sell MW2.

And for the record I can confirm that Reach will be absolutely bangin'.

If Bungie was just now releasing Halo 3 after all these years (also pretending ODST and Wars don't exist) then I think it would be extremely close.

Don't mistake this for me saying they're milking the series like it's Guitar Hero or something, but a Halo launch really doesn't feel like a big deal anymore. We'll see what Microsoft does with the commercials but I can pretty much bet that Reach isn't going to get its own Mountain Dew if you know what I mean. Even the same game was just called Halo 4 it would probably be more exciting.

Modern Warfare 2 isn't going to be topped for a long time.

I think it might, when you think of the fact that almost 3 million people played the beta alone, and let's be honest, the game looks amazing and is almost definitely gonna get rave reviews. I think the fact that ODST was released might hurt sales from people who aren't really sure what Reach is and don't want to get ripped off again, but in all honesty it will be the biggest game of the year on 360 and I think the first week sales will at least come close to beating MW2.

While I'm a big Halo fan, after playing the Reach beta, I've decided I won't be buying it until after I rent it. The beta was pretty disappointing to me.

On the other hand, I got Modern Warfare 2 the first week, but only because it was a gift.

I think it has a damn good chance. More so than anything else that I can think of on the 360 (except for possibly the next Grand Theft Auto game).

It's tough, though. I feel like the series lost a bit of steam after ODST. I thought it was a cool game, but I don't think it was universally loved by Halo fans like the first three. Which is a shame - Reach is shaping up to be an incredible game.

If this were to be the first new Halo title since 3, then I'm certain it would top MW 2's first week sales. Given the reality, I think it'll fall just short. Either way I can't wait to play it.

Kids these days like 'gritty' 'dark' and 'realistic'.
And at the time MW2 was the big new thing, I don't see Reach or even the next CoD surpassing it.

But again, I'm positive Reach will be the better game by far.

I hope Halo: Reach outsells MW2, but I don't think it will, and here are my reasons why:

    • Modern Warfare 2's "realistic" setting is more recognizable than Halo's Sci-Fi setting.
    • I think MS isn't marketing Reach as heavily as they did Halo 3. (Could be wrong about this)
    • MW2 was released closer the the holidays, and while games can sell in other days of the year, the holidays still see higher sales in general.

The second and third reasons could be overcome, but the first one would pose more of a challenge.

But, as doubtful as I think it is, I'm still hoping it will outsell MW2.

MW2 sales will be higher.  That franchise still has growing appeal.  Halo's appeal, being a long running franchise, has stagnated - you are either already a fan of the game or you're not.

Why would it be a better game? People can be bitter and whinge about the multiplayer of MW2 all they like, but the single player is fantastic and Spec-Ops is one of the best current-gen co-op experiences.

@sofacitysweetheart: The single-player was fun but ultimately one note, it consisted of going through one explosion after another. Not to mention how short it was, I was able to beat it in 5 hours and thats shorter than most expansion packs. The story was also a crazy cluster-fuck, every plot twists didn't make a lick of bit of sense and it manages to bee kookier than anything Hideo Kojima ever wrote. I've played. Spec-Ops was pretty awesome, I can give you that.

It would be cool if it did but I doubt it would. Then again id rather it didnt since it would open the floodgates of omg Halo is so overrated, halo sux! blah blah that died down once Modern Warfare 2 became the new cool thing to hate.
