Hi, I'm about to buy my first HDTV and I have a question about the HDMI cable.

    Should I use it?

I don't know the definition that I'm getting with the standard cable and the definition that I can get with the HDMI cable. There was no HDMI cable included in the packaging with the XBox, AFAIK, so I don't know which is the definition my console is capable of. It has HDMI port, though.

    The TV will be 1080p.

    Thank you.

The type of HDMI cord doesn't determine console definition. Your TV is 1080p, so you'll be able to play games in 1080p.

Yes, use a HDMI cable, unbranded ones are fine. It only ships with SD cables because they are cheapskates (not that they are the only culprits).

Use the HDMI cable. It is a necessity and will be fine regardless of the brand.

So my XBox is able to output 1080p through that cable? I'm confused because different versions had different chips and resolutions and I can't really remember how was that mess.

I guess I'll do that, whatever the xbox produces, should be fine. I'll play with the dashboard to check my options.

    Thank you three.

The only thing that matters is what your TV can output, so if your TV is capable of doing 1080p, then you're going to get 1080p. All HDMI cords do the same thing, so which one you use doesn't matter. The 360 will auto detect your exact resolution, so no worries. If you don't have an HDMI cable and are looking for one, buy the cheapest one. The only thing that matters when it comes to the cord is its length. So if you need a longer one, you'll probably have to spend a little bit more, but that's often unneeded. If you have a PS3, and have one already because of it, just use that. Or you may just have an HDMI cord for whatever reason, that's fine. The older Xbox's didn't carry HDMI cords 'cause the old versions didn't have an input for them, newer versions do.

I'm pretty sure the Elite only had one chipset during its life cycle (I think the chipset they used in the Elite was put in the newer "standard" 360s at the time). But yes, it can output high def and you should use an HDMI cable.

The confusion is that most games don't run as 1080 native - they output less and are up scaled.

Weird, my 360 Elite actually did come with HDMI cables. It was the version that came with Halo 3.
