So my 360's DVD Drive basically shit itself inside out, and all my games freeze 10-20 minutes into them.  I only have a 20 GB HDD to install games on, and I sure as hell am not gonna pay top dollar for MS's overpriced 120 GB HDD.  So, I need to RROD my 360 so they send me another unit that isn't so jacked up.  I can't for the life of me kill this thing, though.  I wrapped it in blankets and put a space heater behind it , which triggered the two lights (overheated), but it always works OK after it cools down.  Please help, I'm not paying MS to fix their shitty DVD Drives.

I hear that putting it in the microwave for like 2 seconds will force a redring, but I'm not sure.

I find it hilarious that so many people can't help getting multiple red rings while your trying to get one and you can't.

I agree. They are people out there going to great lengths to prevent this occurrence. I can understand though, I had that happen in my first 360. Luckily, I was under warranty.

Damn, I thought this would be the perfect recipe for some freshly baked RROD.  Dead Rising, the 360 killer (installed on HDD) + space heater + extremely plush blanket wrapped around 360.  I go to the parking garage where the massive quantities of zombies will surely stress the graphics chip to failure combined with the scorching heat.  I'm mowing down zombies laughing maniacally when the fucker turns off, and I get two lights again.  What the hell do I need to do?

@DavidSnakes:  You realize that wrapping a blanket around the thing in fact HELPS red ringing. Some people do that to fix it. I assume your warranty is no longer covered by anything other then the 3 rings, or you wouldn't be going through all this trouble.

I would say just keep it on until you see it. ... Or just send it in, and say you saw the 3 rings. I mean I'm sure Microsoft first off will never know the difference, and even if they do its not like they are going to send it back.

I already did that.  I left a note in the box saying it RROD's an hour or two into gameplay.  Two weeks later, they send back the same busted console.

Open the bitch up, disconnect the fan, and let the thing run for a while.

And it sounds like you are about to get 3rod'd. Freezing is an obvious indicator. If you were having drive problems, you would be getting mass dirty disc errors. You will probably end up with the 0102 error, general hardware failure. MS is pretty good about the warranty, even if you have a launch console. They will act like dicks of course, and attempt to fix yours....which will ultimately fail again.

@Stang: No, the freezing occurs when I wrap blankets around it and that's only because the system detects it has overheated.  I know what you mean about the freezing being a sign of RROD, but it's only the overheating.  Also, doesn't opening the case void my warranty?

Very simple way of doing this,

what ya need to do is, stand infront of your xbox, say "I will hug the thing I love the most in the whole world" then hug a ps2, ps3 or Wii infront of your xbox, it will explode!!

    OK, try this

    1. rapidly turn the console on/off 5 times
    2. turn it on, and leave it on, only continually plug/unplug the video cable from the back of the xbox.
    3. repeat. and when you get sick of it, leave it on all night like when you go to sleep.

It will soon give you the rrod

You said you gave them the xbox, and handed back the same. When mine RROD'd they sent back the same console, but they did something to the motherboard that fixed the problem, so I'm thinking they may have done that to yours as well. They don't just send you a new one willy nilly, and they don't replace the dvd drive unless you specifically send it in to get it fixed (which I'm assuming they make you pay for unless your under warrenty). I guess your best bet is to just hard drive or pay to have the dvd drive fixed.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Whatever you do don't do anything STUPID like putting it in a microwave, or overheating it to the point plastic starts to melt. Microsoft will send it back to you with a letter about how fucking stupid you are.

Just pay the damned cash for a repair you cheapass, I had to, so should you. You get a fresh full warranty on it again, so stop trying to cheat the system.

Also, there is a chance they wont replace the disc drive if you send it in for RRoD repair. Then you'll be sorry lol.

I wrapped mine in three towels and turned it on, but it kept turning off because it overheated.  So instead I just picked it up and chucked it across my room which did the trick.

@DavidSnakes: Sure they do, but not much. Look around on ebay and you can find the console on its own for a really good price.
Alternatively you could 'use your brain' and spend hours  turning it on and off, leaving it on for weeks, wrapping it up in towels or microwaving the damn thing!

Each to their own I guess

while i am not a sage heres some advice. First of all how are you so sure that it is a dvd drive problem? you say games are freezing even when on played from hdd??. That would not indicate a dvd drive problem more system or hdd. The game freezing is meant to be sign of incoming rrod, but there are different errors within the rrod.

My 360 was freezing and overheating and i fixed it by appling better thermal paste  in between heatsinks and cpu/gpu. You should google the "360 secondary error codes" and fully research your problem first otherwise you may be doing more harm than good.

Once you find out the true error you can search it and find out what to do, there are very informative 360 repair forums out there. If you must do the rrod, like the other guy said turn it on/off rapidly shut it off mid game without going back to the dash and let it run for days. If you are trying to maximise the heat running games from hdd only decrease the heat.

If it is your dvd drive after all they can be replaced cheaply, look how cheap they can be on ebay.Worst comes to worst a new arcade is only about the price of 3 games.

no, this will actually cause the motherboard to fry. the 360 would not work at all. you would see sparks coming in two seconds.

i would just suggest u keep on wrapping the thing in towels. what someone else said keep on turning the 360 on and off.

seriously? you think the consumer should pay to replace a hardware defect? thats probly the most stupid thing ive heard in quite a while. its bullshit any system, whether it be a ps3, 360, or wii, die from a hardware defect within its first 5 years. they are supposed to catch these faults in the factory.
