From Joystiq. I meant Razer in the title... sorry.

"Peripheral manufacturer Razer is dipping its shaved toes in the console market, announcing "preliminary approval" from Microsoft to produce an Xbox 360 controller and headset. The $50 wired Onza -- that's the controller -- will have Razer Hyperesponse technology that'll "give faster actuation and a crisp, tactile feel." What's that now? Oh, oh, we pressy the buttons and they make the things happen? Gotcha! Why not just say that? That's what we want from a controller.

The Razer Chimaera headset, which will retail for $130, features 5.1 channel virtual surround sound. The headset also allows "multiple Razer base stations to be connected to create a direct, private communication channel for in-game team conversations" -- or the rest of us can just start a party chat? Best part, though, the "circumaural design of the headset allows for optimum noise isolation for long-hours of comfortable gameplay." Thus allowing gamers to totally tune out their parents, spouse, or crying and hungry child."

Looks pretty damn cool. Buy or Sell?

    Oh.

Let me guess. It is over priced, slightly better, and has cool lighting and paint.

If that d-pad works, I'm in.

Worst thing in the world was being ambushed by a bunch of Imps in DooM, and instead of switching to shotgun you pull up the map. So now I can't see shit (but I can hear the monsters biting my bollocks off), Ahhh yes good times.

It's Razer's first attempt, what if they use it for PCs, that would be cool. It's wired, but that's not a big deal to me. My Xbox 360 controller seems to small for my hands and this one looks different. I've been in the mood to buy another controller for my 360, but there again, off-brand, but it's a Razer.

Not for some PC games. I played a ton of GTA: San Andreas and used both the keyboard/mouse and dual analog controller. I play some older sports games on my PC and dual analog works better as they do with all the racing games if you don't own a wheel not to mention action games.

I don't know what you mean. I have San Andreas and Vice City for my PC and I use keyboard/mouse for on foot and the dual analog for driving.

As for the others with dual analog, football games, basketball, and countless driving games.

    I'll happily chime in here....

Controllers are often better in games that are designed and balanced with them in mind.  For console focussed FPS games that means that auto aim is always enabled.  A mouse's speed might confuse the game logic and hitbox tracking, so you can end up doing worse or having to aim less with the mouse to compensate for this.

For a game like The Force Unleashed : Ultimate Shit Edition mouse and keyboard actually are quite obviously an afterthought because the key layout is AWFUL, but as soon you enable the XBOX 360 controller the game seems immediately simpler to control and thus beat.  I played all the way through the game with mouse and keyboard right up to and including the "rip it down from the sky!" sequence and I had to switch to my XBOX 360 controller because it took way too long to rotate the star destroyer into a position where the game would allow you to drag it down.  With the controller in use, what took me at least 4 attempts using mouse and keyboard and still I failed only took me 3 and ended in success.  Now I will be the first to admit that ASPYR's port of The Force Unleashed wasn't perfect but considering the nature of the game, no matter what control scheme they would've chosen, the mouse had to be part of it.  Doing away with the mouse would certainly annoyed PC users more so than in the game's current form.

You're an arrogant one you are. Madden, MVP Baseball 2005 and Nascar Racing 2003 Season all play great with dual analog control on the PC. Keyboard/mouse... not so much, those are some of the games I play with a dual analog pad on my PC.

I would totally buy that, I love the design a quality of Razer's products and this to me looks great:

    • I love that D-Pad!, the Dpad on the standard 360 is something which will forever continue to bring me woe, I hate it!.
    • They seem to be using they're awesome patented non-slip rubber on the stick tips - I fucking hate the standard 360 controller tips!, they've always been way too slippery for my liking.

    I may well get this.

Any sports situations, or situations where you have to control a vehicle such as a car or spaceship. Specific games? The Freespace series comes to mind. A mouse is a great for high precision, but a keyboard isn't and you can't use a mouse to move in three dimensions. You also can't move the mouse indefinitely as you can with an analog stick. Of course you can pick the mouse up and move it back to the end of the desk and you can do it like crazy to create a continuous movement, but you loose the precision and thus the advantage of the device.

    EDIT:
Also, yes, I know Bellum means war.

Funny you would mention Logitech. I still run with a Logitech dual analog controller, the cheap one with no rumble. I also have a Logitech MX510, love my mouse.

A controller is better in many situations, as was pointed out when you requested examples. Don't be so defensive over keyboard/mice configuration, it's just a control system, it doesn't matter.

Now if only they'd put out a good version of this. Obviously, Razer knows how to make mice, so if only they could apply that to something like that, I'd have my FPS solution on consoles; I've gotten used to controllers and can play console FPS's quite well with it, but obviously, for quick, precision aiming, nothing beats a mouse.

I've never had that happen.  We had Razer Diamondbacks for almost three years at work, and they were still working great when we sold them as we wanted to upgrade to Deathadders.  We've had those for two years now, and still going strong.  Haven't replaced a single one...

...and those are regularly handled by a range of 10-16 year olds.

Well, at least it doesn't cost anymore than a regular controller. However, 3rd party peripherals tend to break far more easily than 1st party stuff and all this stuff seems to be marketed towards HARDCORE GAMERZ. Because obviously a regular controller isn't good enough.

The price tag is retarded even if the D-Pad is actually better.

Every time I use a 360 controller, I think to myself "If only this had Hyperesponse technology to give faster actuation and a crisp, tactile feel".

cool, it looks decent. the headset really looks nice. it is expensive for a controller, though. the controller seems kind of big for holding. it is also wired controller. i just kind of think that wired things are bad now in days as there are wireless controllers for the systems now. i don't think i will be getting it as it's expensive i don't really need another controller.

I don't get why this Pad has 2 Bumpers - i think it will irritate me a lot even though not knowing the sense of the second one.

It's so you can map the thumbstick buttons to those bumpers instead if you like.

Well, I've got a razer keybored that I really like... so I may pick up a shiny new controller. Too bad it's so far away, and I've already got like six of them sitting around the house.

It's just a little small for me. When I got my Xbox 360 in July of '08, my hands cramped up until I got used to it. It's not the thickness, but more the width. More of a personal preference thing I guess.
