    Alert

    Concept »

Alert is a state a game may enter after the player has been overtly detected by enemies, and often brings increased enemy opposition (in numbers, aggression, etc.) while a cooldown timer or meter appears by which the player can gauge the expiration of Alert.

    Overview

Alert is commonly found in stealth games or during stealth sequences. Alert usually marks the transition from enemies following fixed patrol routes to enemies actively searching for, pursuing, or fighting with the player. While in Alert, audio-visual cues such as quickened background music, flashing lights, and urgent character speech are used to inform the player that Alert is in effect and to correspondingly intensify the game experience. Once Alert has expired, enemies typically transition back into their pre-Alert numbers, behavior, and positions in the game world.
