Dr Alfred Versteckt (who likes to be called simply 'Alfred') is an anthropologist who lives in a campervan in the Wallows campground just outside of Scoggins, Minnesota. He is an anthropologist who is doing field work in the area in order to better understand the folklore of the area, and the effect it might have on the people who live there. He has been there for 15 years (and has received 8 government grants in support of his research). Alfred has a quiet, soft-spoken manner, with the habit of dropping cultural-anthropological themes into his conversations.
He crosses the path of Special Agent Nelson Tethers during the events of Puzzle Agent 2, when Tethers returns to Scoggins in order to resolve the disappearances to his satisfaction. Tethers pays a visit to Alfred because a graduate student working with him, Will Medlock, is among the missing people involved in the case.
