Aliens vs Predator vs Aliens vs Predator
I came into Aliens vs Predator knowing very well of its lukewarm perception, but, as a huge fan of the originals I thought "How bad can it be?" Well, I learned the answer to that question; pretty bad. The worse part is, almost all of the things they did wrong could have so very easily been fixed.
Let's start with single player. I'm in the minority here, but I enjoyed the Alien and Predator campaigns immensely. Sure, the AI was just about pants on head retarded, but is there anything better than luring a marine into a dark alleyway with a voice synthesizer and ripping his spinal chord out through his ribcage? Didn't think so. However, these great campaigns take a backseat to the marine campaign, which is unfortunate, as the marine controls like a 400 pound epileptic. I won't comment on the campaign itself, as I couldn't bring myself to finish it.
Now the multiplayer is where the real disappointment sets in. What seems like a good idea is hampered with balance problems and horrendous matchmaking. After waiting ten minutes to find a match, being dropped due to everyone quitting because you were assigned to a match of Domination, and spending another ten minutes to find a second match, you'll find that predators make up the overwhelming majority. "Predators are badass" you'll think "I can see why people enjoy them" but the truth is, you don't. The abundance of predators is simple. The disc. Fucking. Rapes. I've been in a multitude of matches where a single predator abusing the disc can accumulate a killstreak of well over 20. Considering that, out of the other races, Xenomorphs rely on melee alone and if you play as a marine you might as well play with you A/V cables unplugged, this throws off balance entirely, turning the game into Aliens vs Almighty Deity of Unlimited Power.
The multiplayer component also features a progression system, and I'm using that term so very lightly. The only use for gaining levels is to unlock more character skins, of which there are less than 20. So what are those other 30 or so levels for? Just about nothing. After each match you're made aware of how much experience you've earned in total, and how much left you need to gain a level. That's it, no note of how much you gain per kill, when new skins are unlocked or even what level you are. Not to mention that the only way to even check your level, or skins unlocked is wait the ten minutes to join a match. It seems like an addition made either very late in production, or by a developer's cat dancing on their keyboard.
Now maybe I'm blinded by the rosy glasses of Rebellion's past greatness, or maybe I'm mad because I enjoy playing a Xenomorph in multiplayer, but this new iteration of one of my favorite FPS series is nothing but disappointing. I highly recommend not paying $60. This could be a great bargain bin game, at least if they make a few balance tweaks.
