I want to love it, but... but... AARGH!!!!
This game starts off with such potential... and fun, too! But sometime later, it goes all to s***... Now, where to start?
The game looks good for a PSN title. Nice 'n cartoon'y. And there's a definite throwback to the look of the other Doublesix game, Burn Zombie, Burn. The dialogue between characters can be pretty fun, and funny. A foul mouthed alien. That makes me giggle.
Gameplay. Run 'n Gun(or melee) with RPG'ish elements. Leveling up character attributes, earning item drops to modify weapons, fetch quests, or gate quests, that sort of stuff. And a nice variety of zombies to blow the heads off of.
... AND NOW THE CONS!!!!
This little gem is hella fun.. TO A POINT. For some reason, the devs got the great idea of tampering with the working game elements to "increase the difficulty..." make it far enough in the game, and all of a sudden, zombies are quicker, even without status ailments, some are capable of attacking you from a distance, some mutate/go berserk which makes them tougher and harder to kill, and let's not forget my personal favorites, the exploding suicide zombies who detonate if you get too close, which means 9 out of 10 times their spawning point will be right at your feet. Fun times.
With the exception of the melee weapons, you have limited ammo to deal with all of that, but you could, if not for a few things. Killing the enemies drops things like food, ammo, speed boosts and the like. But it seems that the further you make it, the less frequent the item drops become. It almost feels like it was PROGRAMMED this way. WHAT THE HELL?!?! Even worse, when items DO tend to drop, it's usually beyond your reach, because just as I noticed in Burn Zombie, Burn, they love to drop items in the middle of enemy swarms. And later in the game, good luck getting to it before the zombies skin you alive, shock you to death, or blow you to pieces.
But what about the smart bombs, you ask? So you want to know about those, huh? Well, kill enough zombies, and you earn bombs that can clear the immediate area around you of zombies. Levels the playing field, right? Well, not when you randomly get locked in a prone animation after unleashing it, allowing the remaining zombies to get free licks in before the computer remembers, "oh, you want control back now, don't you?" The fact that this happens later in the game, when all that other crap I mentioned earlier starts is kinda telling. The sad thing is it could have been avoided. Hell, all they need to do is patch it so you get item drops besides the f******* speed up sneakers(the most USELESS power up in the game, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE SURROUNDED!!!) and all that other crap would be easier to handle!
I haven't played a game that managed to turn me against it this fast in a very long time. That's quite an accomplishment.
