A British consumer electronics company founded by Alan Sugar in 1968, Amstrad (from Alan Michael Sugar Trading) chiefly produced cheap TV, hi-fi and car stereo systems. In 1984 they released the Amstrad CPC computer series and gained a substantial share of the 8-bit home computer market in the UK. Later they produced the business-oriented Amstrad PCW range (primarily designed for word processing). In 1986 Amstrad bought the all rights to the Sinclair Research computer series, and later sold upgraded version of the popular ZX Spectrum.
