My Love Story - Mostly happy without forced drama. Good main characters.

Love is War - My favorite current series, the end of the upcoming season is going to be great.

Boarding School Juliet - Decent goofy rom-com. Short series.

Some to check out that aren't quite in line with your requested styles

Gurren Lagaan - Fun ride with some great absurd action and well placed tragedy.

Kill la Kill - Same people that made Gurren Lagaan. Exceptional animation and weird but fun story.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - Regularly recommended for good reason. One of the best.

(I guess asking here is better than MyAnimeList.)

Neon Genesis Evangelion sounds like a "something sad or maybe something with a happy ending" type of series, especially with the former when all of the Freudian shit kicks into high gear. If you're gonna do dub though, go with AD Vision if possible, not Netflix.

I see some classics already being recommended so I'll say you must see Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. It is one of the best of all time yet highly underseen.

But leaving that aside...

If you liked "Your Name," you may well like some of Makoto Shinkai's other stuff. I like 5cm Per Second, particularly the first of the three stories (note: links are to YouTube trailers).

If you don't mind thoughtful anime with a slightly melancholy tone sometimes (which would fit with "something sad"!), I'd highly recommend Mushi-Shi and the original series of Kino's Journey (the 2003 series, not the 2017 one). Neither one features continuous stories, rather each episode is its own story. But a lot of those stories are really remarkable. Some of them have happy endings, others ambiguous endings, and still others decidedly tragic endings. Here's a really good AMV for Mushi-Shi that gives a good sense of the feel of it (it's really well-drawn, too!):

Loading Video...

Here's one that doesn't really fit well with what you say you're looking for, but nonetheless is really good and might surprise you: Haikyu!!. It's a sports anime about a boys' high school volleyball team. I never thought I would be into a sports anime, but this one is friggin' amazing. And the first couple seasons are up on Netflix. The first three seasons especially are awesome... the fourth season recently came out in Japan, but I didn't like that one quite as much. Still good. One of the few newer anime that I'm actively following.

Ouran High School Host Club is the best shoujo comedy I've seen, I find it hilarious every time. And of course it has some romance elements in it as well.

Gunslinger Girl is great, though it's (somewhat unexpectedly) not about waifus, but actual little girls. It's also not as action-oriented as the title might suggest. It's about these orphaned little girls who have been scooped up by a covert government agency in Italy and turned into assassins through intense training and some unspecified form of conditioning/brainwashing. And while some of their hit jobs are shown, the show is actually more about their lives when they're not doing hits. The first season of it (13 episodes) is awesome. The second season... not so much.

Finally, I highly recommend Moribito. It's a fantasy/adventure anime based on a series of light novels and directed by the same guy who did the Ghost in the Shell series (which is itself a classic). The main character is a spear-wielding woman in her 20s who ends up being the guardian of a prince--a prince whose father, the king, is trying to have him assassinated. Everything about it is top-flight. It's one I've ended up re-watching a lot and it just never really gets old for me, it's so well-written.

I could recommend lots of other stuff, but this is probably the best of it that kinda sorta vaguely fits your brief.

So, you want a sad story, bit of a happy ending, and waifus huh? Hmmmm, might be tough to find an anime that fits all of those, but let's see...

I almost want to recommend Zeta Gundam, but you might want something a little more modern. I'd say Baccano! is a fun time, but not particularly sad for the most part...

You know what? Revolutionary Girl Utena might be just what you're looking for. It drags a bit in the middle, but it's majorly depressing, somewhat optimistic in it's ending and the Waifus? Problematic but there. Might not dig the art style at first, but it grows on you. Also, it's all available for free on youtube in both dub and sub. So that's nice.

Try From New World. I personally prefer the novel it's based on but there is no English translation. If you want something sad and bleak with a bit little of hope by the end, this 25 episodes long science fiction series just might be the thing you are looking for. Darling in the Franxxx shamelessly stole elements from it and did it so badly that I would recommend From New World to anyone had watched that disappointing Trigger and A-1 co-production.

If you like that one and want something similar but with cyberpunk elements, check out Psycho-pass. It aired along side with From New World originally and I am mentioning it because no one above had mentioned it yet.

Nagi No Asukara: A Lull In The Sea - interpersonal drama about different societies co-existing. Absolute tearjerker. Some "cute" characters, but they're not outright waifus as the intention is to have depth to the characters rather than tropes.

Shin Sekai Yori (From The New World) - fairly low budget, even by anime standards: Styles switch mid-episode for artistic effect, puts a lot of people off. Story focuses on a new society after psi powers awaken in humans and cause wideswept societal collapse. Main focus is in what happens when the psi powers go wrong and how they try to control it.

Gankutsuo: The Count Of Monte Cristo - another story about characters over action. This show literally oozes with style. BONES really got to flex their creative and artistic muscle for this one and it shows. Story is nothing surprising, it's literally the Count of Monte Cristo in anime form with a slightly different framework. No waifus to fawn over, so I guess if that's a hard sell then skip this one.

Martian Successor Nadesico - did you watch Neon Genesis Evangelion and wish it took more cues from Tenchi Muyo? Then Nadesico is for you. This is anime trash in its purest form.

Log Horizon - the first isekai I experienced that took more interest in building the world and answering questions like "Are the NPCs alive now that the world is real?" than creating a Mary Sue power level story. There's some really memorable characters and moments here, and plenty of waifu tropes of all types to choose from. There is also a deeper story about self-esteem and the gradual loss of the self. Also LIVING IN THE DATABASE, DATABASE.

that's all I got, sorry!

Since lots of people have answered this already. I’ll put some anime that are underrated, so note I will be ignoring the popular (but good) ones

  • BOFURI: I don’t want to get hurt, so I’ll max out my defense.
  • Charlotte.
  • Daily Lives of Highschool boys
  • This art club has a problem

Daily Lives of Highschool Boys is pretty great. I definitely see Asobo Asobase as the female version of that one.

Though it's a bit more darker in which the main protagonists are each revealed to be pretty awful. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia but with anime girls.

But holy shit that ending theme fucking slaps.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is dark and super awesome. I heavily recommend.

Konosuba is very funny and has cute girls in it. There’s a lot of fanservice but I think they also use it for good humor. Overall a good lampoon on the isekai genre

Three months late, but: As someone who also watched Boku no Pico, it kinda gets more and more overrated as using it as a troll recommendation has lost it's potency; at least among the millennial anime fans who learned about it though AMV Hell /0. At the end off the day, its shota porn, one of a few, which I'm sure is shocking to folks around here who keep things pretty safe (and arguably milquetoast), but my history with 4chan/GameTrailers has thickened my skin towards it and other things, and Natsuyasumi better scratched a previously held bi-curiosity itch.

Oh, and if you don't want to feel like even more of a degenerate for knowing more about the "cultured" side of anime, don't Google search "Geez, your yogurt isn't yummy at all."

Come to think of it, yeah, I think I may have first been exposed to it via an AMV. What I distinctly remember is that the song for the AMV I'm thinking of was "White Christmas," the lyrics of which became a euphemism for something else entirely from what the song originally intended. And if you don't know what I'm referring to, I ain't going to enlighten you.

It's all just a weird deal because I believe stuff like Boku no Pico is technically illegal in the States and a lot of other places (though rarely enforced, from what I can tell), but so normalized in Japan that everyone tends to just shrug their shoulders. And though I think that generally speaking that's the correct reaction--because we have far more important things to worry about than cracking down on pervy animations and comics (while they may be offensive to a lot of people, they hurt no one)--I can't help but be a tiny bit taken aback when someone comes on a fairly clean site like Giant Bomb asking for anime recommendations and casually name drops Boku no Pico as a reference. It's just not something I would've ever brought up here, or a lot of other places!

@atheistpreacher: *Google searches "Boku no Pico White Christmas"* I'm guessing the specific AMV that you're referring to doesn't have too much to do with Mariah Carey, though I'm sure that an HMV using the song by Bing Crosby exists on some corner off the internet at this point.

I vaguely remember Alex Navarro describing GB's horny being on the low key side, so I pretty sure that those here who know anime beyond the popular shonen titles are familiar with shows like Bible Black, but don't mention them too often in order to maintain the safe-for-work status quo. And as for shows that are "technically illegal", all I know for sure is that watching the edited version of Kite on Amazon and Hulu is as easy as buying the uncut version on DVD and Blu-ray.

I don't know if you been following the Evangelion Rebuild movies, but the final one 3.0 has come out on Amazon Prime for streaming and the critics and fans are calling it a masterpiece conclusion to the series as a whole. I haven't watched it yet, because I'm watching the other Rebuild movies again, which I also highly recommend.

If you have Prime, you can also watch the other Rebuild movies, but if not, there are many other ways you can do so. The original television series is on Netflix for example, though its a version many purist don't like because of the changed voice acting of some characters and the exclusion of some of the iconic music. Of course Crunchyroll and Funimation will also have EVA available for you to watch.

Actually, FWIW I just realized I was mixing up my milquetoast Christmas songs. D'oh. It wasn't "White Christmas," it was "Let It Snow." The video is "Antichristmas 2009."

Gundam Build Fighters

Gundam Build Fighters is a prime example of turning a lame idea into something worthwhile. I really was not expecting it to be this good. Even with it's strange premise, it manages to reach outside the box of its genre and become something more than I ever imagined it could be.

"13 Sentinels Aigis Rim" is more visual novel than videogame and plays out like a massive, multi-season anime. Only its one you can take on at your own pace.

Hell, maybe I'm just going nuts for it because I'm the only one I know playing it.
